Imagine reading this in book from only.

You'd probably be waiting six months between volumes 2 & 3.

Talk about a cliffhanger.

Happy Friday morning with latte and gray gloom and then spotlights of helicopters and back story. Yeah. Today wins.

1- Mark is a cutie, yes.
2- I like how Luke is essentially the same, only more ragged, when he is older. Pig.
3- Did I miss Sirkka and Jack in the warehouse room thing?
4- I'm going to have to go back and re-read (oh, darn) as I am confusing Kirk and Karl with each other and that is no way to show respect to fictional characters.

I hope everyone is well and healthy.

Thanks to the whole Freakangels and Whitechapel crew(s) for brilliance and inspiration on mediocre days.

Arrghh! You Bastard! Okay, now that that is out of the way. I've really been looking forward to this. I knew it was coming eventually and this is a great place to drop it into the story. I'm incredibly frustrated and and thrilled at the same time. Well done.

the pariah has a face...
be it a flashed back face, but a face just the same. and it isn't evil, just normal (given the circumstances), cute even.
i hope the whole volume isn't in flashback land, but it would be interesting. like a season of a television show that is totally set in the past, except done well.
anyway, good start to the next volume.

very nice - can't wait to see the rest of the backstory.

I hold out hope that we'll see the event soon.

So, why were they all being hunted by government agents in helicopters, again?

I have only recently discovered this fantastic story (a roundabout thank you to Joe Hill, for whom Mssr Ellis wrote the introduction for his latest graphic novel), and have rushed through the previous 72 episodes, so maybe I missed it, but has anyone mentioned why they were being hunted?

For that matter, do we know the apocalypse they caused was due to their retaliation against said government agents? They haven't (again, to the best of my recollection) ever expressed any kind of "You know it's kinda their fault too for putting us in a corner" sentiments.

If I'm rehashing stuff that has already been discussed ad infinitum, ad nauseum, in previous threads, I apologize, and feel free to ignore me. But them's my thoughts.

Jack - Page 3, just behind Luke's leg I think?
Sirkka - On the boxes? Pg3 again?

Can't see Arkady anywhere myself...
Nice episode. Love the way they are all in some way friendly with each other in the past.

Because coppers hate freaks, and the government hates angels.

Beautiful work Paul. Bravo.

While still very concerned for Kait, this is a great place for the backstory, since we are about to meet Mark in the "present". I have always loved glimpses of what made the characters who they are today (in any work of fiction).

As for Mark not looking as sinister as people expected, none of them look as we know them yet. All of them are softer in every way. He hasn't gone there yet, wait for it.

@Sai and Wax - That looks like the glimpse of Arkady we saw before (not Sirkka), same outfit. She also had long purple hair back then.

@headlesssamurai - From what we've gathered, the government found out about their strange abilities and whatnot, then tried to hunt them down. (the premise is somewhat based on the Midwich Cuckoos (the book that was also inspiration for Village of the Damned) as Warren mentioned in a skip-week or intermission somewhere. All things indicated they ended the world, though perhaps not their intention, while using their powers to "fight back".

Thank you all for taking a shorter break than the one you deserve.
About time, though, that flashback.

@sai - I believe Arkady is on the boxes above Conner. Which means that's Kait on the left, over near the windows, sulking. Jack is behind Luke, yes.

I like how KK is already in love with flying machines.

Surprisingly, Mark looked pretty much exactly like I thought he would. I love the 'Kill Bill' look he's sporting.

I love this more with each episode. And for all we know this flashback could go on until Volume 5 ! Which would be great, actually...

What sweet kids; And, do we know how this fictional England is different from the actual one? Questions arise.

Hi, I just started reading FreakAngels yesterday and I can't express how into this story I am. I've been an Ellis fan since reading Transmet a few years back, but somehow I missed that he was writing this. The character as incredibly fun and interesting while still leaving you blown away when things get serious.

I noticed a few things in this episode:
1: Anyone else think it's interesting that Mark has been introduced for the first time in a flashback? It just seems like this sort of thing would happen near or directly after he's introduced in the main plot. I'm wondering if he's the mystery culprit that's a Jack the Ripper fan. It seems like he'd be able to get his hands on the types of weapons in the case and also would know Kaitlyn's name.

2: This episode is only the third time that Connor's journal has really been highlighted. Makes me wonder if that's to slip its importance under the radar (especially since the FreakAngels are keeping their abilities secret).

(Sorry if I'm writing too much. I'm still pretty excited after my first read-through of the story)

3: If Karl and Kirk first suggested the show of strength, but Mark led them to the event that caused the Crash, and they all agreed to do it with unintended repercussions, is Mark really the one mainly at fault for the Crash? Or, is his fault strictly limited to his later actions?

I do think that whatever caused them to drive out Mark is something that happened after the fall, not because of the fall.
• CommentTimeOct 23rd 2009
Agreed. We're told earlier that Mark's big mistake was assembling and brainwashing an army of drones.

They all seem pretty accepting of their part in blowing up the world, but Mark's fall was his alone. Interestingly, though, it seems his "we're doing this wrong" sentiment is showing up in the "present" through Arkady and Luke now... if Mark and Kait both survive the apartment, I can see a more interesting dialogue taking place along those lines. Of course, if Mark is still all about creating armies of drones to do his dirty work (as he seems to be), then I'm assuming the dialogue will be a bit shorter.

@Flaybo: Apparently it was because he went on some kind of a mind controlling spree and I would assume that happened after (or maybe him doing that has caused them to be hunted, who knows?). I wonder how it will be when he returns though, considering how Arkady is the only one who has really developed her power.

First time I've actually had to wait for the updates and I cannot say myself too fond of it. Looking forward to the next!

I'm having a time out until I can learn some manners.
Wonderful episode of Freakangels, I really love how Warren ratchets up the attention to breaking point in a triumphant end to volume 3, only to go 'And I refuse to resolve this issue straight away AND WHAT IS MORE, you're really going to love me for it'. It seemed like a great opportunity for a flashback and I really look forward to seeing more about the FAs before our current Whitechapel days. Hopefully, a lot more questions will be answered, but knowing Warren he'll raise more questions than he addresses.

I'm going to the MCM Expo; I've come all the way from Colchester to be in London specifically for the weekend. I'll be there all of Sunday, and am feeling a little ambivalent about meeting Morgana (Merlin, BBC1) in the flesh. Firstly, everyone knows never to meet those who you admire from afar as they tend to either disappoint with dullness or be arrogant pricks, and secondly because I don't know if she can possibly be that attractive in real life. I mean - what if it's all CGI and clever camera angles? Alas, I'll bite the bullet. I'm even tempted to ask a question such as 'Hello, I was wondering, when you wake up in Merlin all breathless and frightened from one of your nightmares, did you film that scene just once, or do you bother to film it for every single episode?', but I doubt that would go down particularly well.

Who else is going to be at the MCM Expo on Sunday? I'm hoping to meet Paul Duffield, I really want to say 'thanks' in person :D
