There was, way back in the mists of... 2007... a recurrent meme among several comics art blogs. Reclaiming characters from their owners, I guess it could be broadly described as... people were reimagining abused characters (chiefly Supergirl) as artistic call-and-response various places, chiefly LiveJournal. In the aftermath of that, I did a similar thing on old messageboard The Engine, called REMAKE/REMODEL. They were embraced as technical exercises, bits of fun, ways to get the brain moving. I think most people's favourite was the dear late Mike Wieringo's wondrous retro-aristo Buck Rogers...

I thought it might be an interesting thing to bring back here. So, once a week, I'll call a character, and you art types here can post images of your reinterpretation of that character.

NOTE: NO MORE PHOTO-MANIPULATION "art". I'll just delete them. People have been drenching recent threads with several pieces at a time that they've knocked out in photoshop in 2 minutes with no thought at all. I consider this to be taking the piss now.

NEW RULE: no more than TWO submissions by any one person in any one REMAKE/REMODEL.

    The point is REinterpretation: remake/remodel.

    -----------

You've had it easy, lately. This is an unusually tough one, because there's nothing there.

When Ann Star was a child, she was caught outside in a fierce snow storm. She managed to survive by taking refuge in a cave until the storm was over. In the cave, she discovered and old hermit from another planet who could not stand the light of day. He taught her secrets that gave her super strength and increased resistance to damage. Now known as Super Ann, she is depicted as always running on tiptoes, ballerina style, and as having many Superman-like powers. These powers include super speed, super strength, and the ability to leap tall buildings.

    See?

What useful cues can you find in that?

Super Ann pre-dates Wonder Woman by some three years.

    --

Your task, as ever, is to re-invent that into something a 21st Century audience could enjoy.

I look forward to seeing what you come up with, but bear in mind this is an ART thread. No pen-portraits. This is ART ONLY. Posting just a bunch of text, or a scribble and a vast number of words, will get the thread closed and your account banned.

    You have one week. Go.

Feetal's ghiz! Really tough one. What the hell did people smoked three years before Wonder Woman??! Jeez...

    Nice one, Ellis. Getting started...

    Super ANN!

Ann Star goes to the St Mary's School for Young Girls, where she uses her superpowers to teach bullies a lesson, prevent cheats from prospering and stopping the Headmistresses Witch Hunt...

(pencil drawing, waiting on my cintiq... if I had my cintiq it would be full colour... but pencil is all you're getting now!)

I think that may be considered a pen portrait. Would edit it, just in case.

@Dario -- I think "pen portrait" refers to a written summary of what the character should be like, not a portrait done with a pen. :)

Super-Ann sounds like she has the Silver Age Green Lantern's origin (or vice versa)... except for the ballerina thing. Yeah, okay.

    One line isn't a pen-portrait.
  6.  (7073.8)
...and why were super-people always leaping over tall buildings in the 30's and 40's? Just walk around.

For the metaphor, dear boy. For the metaphor.

    Overly cautious. My mistake.

I saw Super Ann's back story as a sort of shamanistic ritual of rebirth, and so she emerges physically transformed. According to Wikipedia, the name Ann may also mean eagle, so I gave her eagle features (like her eyes) - I assume the reason she can walk on her toes is because of her light bird bones.

Hope it's not too awful - I got frustrated partway through the profile view, and scrapped what was a version of her in street clothes.

Here's a Super Ann hardened by lax 1930s child-labour laws and a cave-dwelling alien hermit:

True enough! The best thing these threads do for me is kick me in the ass to produce better stuff. Art in a few days...

I completely missed Glycon due to my computer losing its vital magic smoke, and I haven't plonked the scanner into the new one yet. Hopefully this week. In the meantime, new remakers, yay!
