This year I reached a kind of milestone and started doing what I never thought I would do. I put down the potato chips and started exercising regularly. Either I do a regular workout indoors or run a mile or two every other day (sometimes every day). Combined with eating healthier, the results so far have been great.
But here's the thing. For both the workout and the run, I tend to rely heavily on music to get my ass moving. It can be something contemplative to listen to as I'm running past the Toronto cityscape or something incredibly fast paced that helps get my heart pounding quicker.
So the question is: Do you folks have any preferences or suggestions for exercise music? Songs, albums, mixes...whatever! I know I certainly wouldn't mind adding something new in to my playlist and you probably won't either.
Lately what's been getting me moving is this 90s dance mix that I think tacopunch added in the Wedding Music thread.
For both the workout and the run, I tend to rely heavily on music to get my ass moving.
Same here. I go runnin' very often, but it does only work with music. Normally I'll go for something fast, straight forward but still somehow entertainive. If I don't feel like Municipal Waste or Napalm Death it may even be a silly Eurodance Trash-Mix with 2 Unlimited and Scooter once a year.
I barely exercise any more due to bike related knee-knack and ankle-gah (save for a weekly game of 5-a-side chase-the-pigs-bladder), but when I'm doing the more vigourous housework chores (the closest I like to get to a gym), the only choice of music for me is 70's Funk. Ass-shaking 70's funk to be exact..
i find most "Dance" moves at too slow a pace for me, but i find these albums are brilliant for going for a good hard run...
The Futureheads - the Futureheads At the Drive in - Relationship of command LCD Soundsystem - 45:33 The Generators - From Rust to Ruin Leftfield - Leftfield Rage Against the Machine - The battle of Los Angeles
When I force myself to work out, the only way I can get through any kind of cardio/aerobic exercise (weights are fine because you don't really need the attention span) I have to listen/watch something that just completely takes me out of what I'm actually doing. So I tend to favor TED talks and NPR podcasts. Music just isn't distracting enough for me.
I've always found that The Bronx - The Bronx II is amazing workout music. Also Aesop Rock's Run (All Day) mix/track is pretty good for a long haul, as is the pitchblend of theFREEHoudini by Themselves. Minor Threat's Discography is good music to get psyched up to beat the shit out of a punching bag.
I've gotten back into jogging the last few weeks, and having the right soundtrack is important for me. If I go for something too high tempo, I tend to match my pace to the pace of the music, and that leads me to burn myself out too fast. These work for me:
Clutch - Strange Cousins From The West. Nicely driving blues rock riffs here, so it's good for finding my groove.
The Mars Volta - Frances The Mute. Specifically, track five onwards. Lots of nice, open space-y bits that segue back into some good old fashioned freak out moments - the musical equivalent of an occaisional electric shock to spur me on.
Flat Earth Society - Psychoscout. Moody, brooding jazz for the most part, but again it cuts loose often enough to give me that extra boost occaisionaly.
Super Furry Animals - Love Kraft. I love the autumnal feel of this album, so it's great for those misty evenings when the sun is just setting over the sea.
The same goes for Neil Young's After The Gold Rush. Plus, the steel guitar bit from the end of 'Southern Man' is great for when I'm starting to, ahem, "hit the wall".
