Pelican - The Fire In Our Throats... The Mars Volta - Amputechture Jesu - Conqueror Comets on Fire - Avatar
Always winners as far as I'm concerned. Every now and again I dip into some jazz as well, particularly Coltrane's Blue Train and Miles Davis' Kind of Blue.
I was at the gym the other day and I put on the new Converge record. I have never run faster in my life. I felt like the hounds of hell were nipping at my heels.
I, like a good amount of other people here, listen to metal. For weight training I listen to a lot of newer hard core, like Full Blown Chaos, Bury Your Dead, and Walls of Jericho. Nothing is better than catching a good breakdown during the last few reps of your final set. For cardio, I like to listen to a lot of european metal, like In Flames and Emperor. The faster tempo helps keep my pace up. Though, every now and then a Meshuggah track comes on and fucks everything up, and I'm told by a couple of people I run with that it's pretty funny to watch.
If by working out, you mean slugging back drinks and smokes then : DANZIG -DANZIG 3 (how the god's kill) are always classic and provide a good laugh every now and then. Also little know hardcore band -KID DYNAMITE- just makes me want to punch someone in the throat.
Chris (Murderbot) puts up a mixtape every week on his blog http://yearofmixtapes.blogspot.com/ as well as a little history on the theme of each week. Any of those would do for a nice workout. The themes vary a lot from week to week. There's a Philly soul mix a few weeks back that has been getting a lot of play.
I don't know how these would work for tempo but I also really enjoy the electronic explorations series Electronic Explorations It swings from 180+bpm breakbeat music to dubstep depending on the artist profiled but each one is a killer.
There's also Kid606s series of uptempo, pop friendly mixes, over at his soundcloud
I will get behind Joe.Distort with the powerviolence suggestion. I won't actually be working out, but I will be imagining how much better a potential workout would be to Fuck on the Beach.
Listened to Slayer yesterday while doin' an extended jogging round, which I've then run in a faster time than my smaller average standard route (no joke).
I did the same thing recently - and spent a good few hours going through my entire collection and tagging songs and placing them into "warmup," "energetic", "angry", and "cooldown" categories. Warmup and energetic are pretty self-explanatory; "angry" is for when I'm doing the crunches and hurty stuff that require more willpower.
I then use my player's "smart tags" function to shuffle me stuff out of each list. I'm waiting badly for a player that's smart enough to let me build a 30 to 60 minute playlislt with the appropriate amount of each tag in the proper order.
I don't think I've ever gone running with an actual soundtrack - whenever I do it regularly I seem to have lost the relevant gear - but I often have something running through my head. Yelping the lyrics to Orgasmatron by Motorhead as a sort of hi-stress mantra when the going gets tough is quite good. I can't deny the appeal of some of the mighty, mighty Sisters Of Mercy's uptempo stuff (Adrenochrome, Heartland, etc) or the Dead Kennedys either, but also Blondie (Hangin' On The Telephone...) or Tom Petty (Runnin' Down A Dream cannot be denied, I don't care how cool you are).
@ tacopunch - Cheers for the link to murderbot! Absolutely crucial stuff.
I hate to derail the conversation, but when (on the particularly rare occasion) that I work out, I usually set up the stationary cycle in front of the teevee and run a tape of Mystery Science Theater 3000, and tell myself I gotta keep moving, or I don't get to watch anymore. That kinda does the trick for me, but then, I'm more visually oriented....
Now, actually doing something creative, and needing a soundtrack for that, well, that's a music thread to watch....
I've often contemplated some sort of rig where I remove a laptop's battery, and hook it up to some kind of windup powersupply or genny that would be powered by the cycle. So I literally could only have Internet, music and what not while I was actually pedaling the cycle.
If somebody's already invented this, I'd be all over it. It seems really odd when I think about it to be pedalling a stationary bike, burning off calories, at the same time I'm charging a device from the wall. The one thing should be able to do the other.
Even tho I haven't been to the gym in a week or so, I tend to just put the random shuffle on. Stuff like Braindamage, Latterman, From Ashes Rise, and the occasional "softer" thing like Bob Mould.
