Perks of the trade: today I received review copies of Jeff Vandermeer's novel FINCH and Bob Fingerman's novel PARIAH. And apparently the new Moon Wiring Club album is on its way to me. Every time this happens, I become part of a larger self-supporting net of creators. And, of course, you find your Kevin Bacon count gets smaller. (also, you find out that, eventually, everyone knows Michael Moorcock)

This is sort of the work that message boards used to do. Message boards are how I know Fraction, for instance, and Brubaker, and, god, a shitload of other people. (Though, oddly, not Gillen and Rossignol -- I first met them when they came to interview me for a videogame magazine. I think it was strange days for both me and Rossignol when we found ourselves speaking at the same seminar at the Architecture Association earlier this year.)

(Though maybe no less strange than being broadcast on the net when I spoke. Though I did make Ariana jump by saying hello to her on the video internets.)

Vague point being: message boards were the point of connection. And Whitechapel's been no different: not for me, but for you. Hell, we already have our first married couple that met through Whitechapel. (WEF generated several, including Matt Fraction and Kelly Sue DeConnick.) And a PDF-based comics "evangelism" project launched by Ali Pulling (Oddcult). And there were Rotor-style projects, and god knows what else that I've missed or forgotten.

I'm not saying trawl Whitechapel for hook-ups. (Frankly, I have first dibs on that.) I'm saying: keep talking. Keep making things.

John Robb, on Global Guerrillas, answered a FAQ the other day, that FAQ being something along the lines of "how can I plan to survive an uncertain future?" And his answer boiled down to "make things." If he'd been Matt Jones, he would have said GET EXCITED AND MAKE THINGS. The point is the same.

 Oddcult is Pulling? Heh, I should maybe stop picking on his Crypto stuff so much.

WEFers used to meet up a lot in real life to do stuff that wasn't always comic related, too. We went on picnics, to bars, to political events, etc. But it's because we talked about those things on the forum that we realized we had similar interests, or that we wanted to try something new with someone more seasoned. Whitechapel is a bit more organized, but a less willing to engage in discussions where people might disagree with each other. On the WEF, I think the individual "Around the Net" posts would have each had their own thread (which was a spammy nightmare, seriously -- kudos to Ariana), but maybe there would also be a couple of really intense threads that talked about the world outside (not just comics) and we'd argue with each other. We were still friends by the end of the day, for the most part. But it was good for me, and I think good for a lot of us who were still young at the time, because it forced us to think about a lot of things I don't otherwise think we would have thought about. I'm still friends with a lot of people from that forum.

And so I'm not strictly being nostalgic, I'd just like to say that I've met some lovely people on here. :)

 I feel slightly guilty for neglecting this place because the people here are awesome but my home stomping ground is LJ. I definitely still appreciate the sentiment, though. Were there really social institutions before the internet forum that allowed people to connect like this? I feel like I could have lived my entire life without internet in my small town and never developed such fruitful relationships as I have with the aid of places like Whitechapel. Rock on, ladies and gents.

 Nah this forum is definitely one of the more interesting places to interact and think for me. The number of times i´ve astounded friends into stupefied silence this year with ideas of planet hacking, transhumanism, societal changes and weird Watchmen flash art, i´m still surprised that they are speaking to me.

Also thanks to Warren and the rest of the Whitechapel cohorts, my cultural antennae has seriously gone haywire in 2009 in terms of film, print and especially music. And because of this It´s given me the impetuous to get off my ass and start writing again.

 What @redex says, right down to the LJ.

Although, I do split my time between LJ and twitter at the moment and LJ is mostly locked down and used to keep up with the friends I know on LJ. It's also still the main method of communication for my end of the beast fandom (well, LJ and the swiftly surpassing the original source code LJ-clone, Dreamwidth) when I'm actually interacting with fandom.

I do check in here frequently because it's generally fascinating and I like the people, although for awhile there I was in read only mode only. I owe a lot of my social development and general comfort with self-levels to communities online, originally mailing lists but forums and blogs as they came played a significant part as well.

 Over the years I have been/am currently a member of a number of active online communities. Starting with usenet groups moving on to mailing lists and into discussion boards. These groups have been based around common interests- music, politics, literature, art, and on.
It has been my experience that the most successful and active communities where those which encouraged on and off board collaboration, interaction, and experiences. Whitechapel is tops in this.
I've never met another WC'er in the meatworld but in my short time here I have seen pictures of dozens (hundreds?), received a great mix CD from halfway around the world, discussed food and cooking, comics, photography, books, and random internet crazyness. My experience with Whitechapel extends beyond this site as I've now added two or three dozen WC'ers to those I follow on tumblr and twitter. I'm pretty sure a good portion of my holiday shopping will be coming from people who've posted in the etsy thread. One thing that has me checking back throughout the day is the level of respect that is shown here. People from all walks of life post here and it never degrades to pissing contests (thanks to Warren and Ariana for keeping the douchenozzle population low)
This place encourages discussion, collaboration and creativity. I'm glad it's here and now I'll stop with the rambling.

 Whitechapel is the perfect example of a working benevolent dictatorship.

I've written this before, likely on a SNOM whilst singing Warren's praises, but I am grateful for this comm, for the work that Warren has put into the world and thus for the opportunity to (virtually) personally give him my thanks and I'm happy to do it again. People doing stuff via Whitechapel, or simply using it as a medium to let us all know what they're up to offer me a lot of inspiration and when I've had projects going it was a thrill to report it here, like an actual, for reals, artist.

Even on days like today, when I feel like I've been steamrolled by life and I have no energy for anything, let alone being creative, pulling open WC offers a tiny bit of light. I don't have my closest friends here and that may be good because I can get tired of them and they of me, and I don't have such strangers that we have nothing in common here (obviously!). We're acquainted well enough that whenever I've been to a meetup (NYC FTW!) I didn't feel like a fake trying to pretend like I belonged and, moreover, like I didn't need to chew through our mutual baggage before getting to know each other.

Thanks again, Warren.

 Nah, seriously, though I almost spend all my time in read-only mode, I'd have to quote icelandbob; Though I'm still a youngster somehow, I can still remember those good ol' days back in The Engine: one of it's most important characteristics is that, and Whitechapel like it's predecessor, it is something fun and interesting to read and do on the internet. I mean, considering that: people have a bunch of things to do in real life, depending on each one's interest, but mostly always looking for a place to feel some KIND OF contention, you know, somewher to talk, relate, etc. Well, my point is, you have this VAST thing the internet is and, well, one could spend the whole damn day (or whole damn week, or month, or so) looking for stuff to read, to do, yadda, yadda, well, good to have ONE spot where one can feel contained, related, blah, blah, Whitechapel's great, and usefull (somehow..) and, well, I don't know what other words or line of thinking could use to express my ever volatile ideas...

 Belatedly, but yes, I have a small close community of friends, mostly built up through previous interaction on a tiny writing/fandom forum and more currently aggregated through text-based roleplaying. I "grew up" on LJ so I have a certain fondness for it, in all it's retardedness [my yearly quota of non-PCness]. I don't consider it a blogging tool, I consider it a way to share stream-of-consciousness daily updates to a small circle of friends in semi-private. Kind of like a mailing list I guess, except with threaded commenting. And yes, it is an excellent (horrible) way to look back at how you have changed over the years. Over the summer I celebrated my fifth year on the same livejournal account. Good to know I'm not actually one of the last of a dying breed on LJ! Make faces all you want, the institution itself has nothing to do with what we have made from it and found in it. I also use twitter, mostly to keep in touch with the same group of friends in semi-private, and it's also plugged into my Facebook status, which is also relatively locked down to mostly friends & family. And then I definitely hopped on the Dreamwidth bandwagon when it opened and I think I have some invites left as well if anyone wants to take a poke around. Send me an email. They've made tremendous strides since opening improving the LJ Opensource code and even if I don't actually use it except as a more stable archive for my LJ I consider them a better product by far. It's just a matter of the fact that all my friends are still on LJ and though communication between the two is possible, it's not ideal.

And then on top of these I mod my university program's student society webpage, which has been around since the early 90s and hasn't changed much since then. There's a 'chatbook' that is like pre-facebook with names/pictures/contact info of everyone in the program, a 'forum' which is just a twitter-esque name+textfield arranged by date posting area, and then an anonymous forum called 'chat' which is like 4chan complete with injokes but with more manners. There isn't actually much modding involved, other than fixing giant pictures that break the layout and so on.

So Whitechapel is pretty far down the list when it comes to social things I need to check every day, though I'm trying to make more of an effort because the people here are lovely and I always find my eyes opened (whether in a good way or a 'hand me the brainbleach' way) to something new.

I'll admit, it took me months to get up the courage to create an account and once I did I didn't comment at all for a long time, you guys are definitely the cool kids of the internet.

[Sorry for the tl;dr, jeezus I am longwinded. THAT is why I'm on LJ, tbh.]

edited to say: I love how the "Post Comment" button turns into "Wait" while the page is loading. Some people just never learn that pressing things twice doesn't make them go faster...

 I have fun with Whitechapel. Glad it's here. I really appreciate the range of tastes and talents around here. I knew about The Engine, but never got around to logging on. Once upon a time, I was deeply into the private, dial-up BBS thing (circa 1990), where I first met some comics writers and a bunch of musicians and radio people. Got to access GEnie for free as long as I helped keep the Music forum moving. Back when modems had hamsters inside them to power up, and data was so slow it often moved backwards.

This is also an excellent antidote for nine-hour days spent languishing in cubicle capitalism.

 I think it probably goes without saying how much I appreciate this place. At least, given the sheer amount of time I spend here.

The two largest groups of people I keep in contact with through Facebook and Twitter are people back home in Fargo, and people from WC. This place keeps me sane, it lets me vent, it lets me look at neat art, find new music, and interact directly with people I'd probably simply stammer at in real life. (I know Uncle Warren is, in fact, warm and cuddly in real life, but that wouldn't stop me from being at a loss to not look like a bigger idiot than I am in textspace.) (Jesus that sentence is a mess.) I walk the line near the eels now and then, but I'm generally smart enough to back off when I'm told.

The appeal is, I think, that we actually are such a diverse group of people. We don't have everything for everyone, but there's a little bit of something for most people. And I like that Warren and Ariana foster that environment. Let the people do what they want, unless they're being arseholes, in which case swoop in and mercilessly smite them.

I know that I'm not exactly one of the old guard here. I wasn't around for WEF or The Engine or any previous incarnation of this community and these people. But I've been around since Freakangels 0001, and it's been long enough that I don't think I'd be too opposed to hanging out with anyone, although I might not trust some of you shifty bastids. But I'd probably still drink with y'all. And perhaps engage in hijinks and shenanigans.

Anyway, enough with the love-in from me. There's no hugging in Whitechapel.

 @racingpenguins
I'm sorry you are in Tampa...I lived in the Sarasota/Bradenton area for 4 years while I went to grad school.
Worse years of my life. Happy to be back in liberal, atheist and artsy Northern California. Best of luck.

 @celan - Heh, thanks for the sympathy. I haven't been here long, but it's been a hard transition leaving Austin to come here. Sigh...

 @RenThing
I'm in the Northbay but I know some cool peeps from the Southbay. Nearest Whitechapelers to me are in San Francisco (one hour away, sigh).

@racingpenguins
The culture shock was intense for me...I'm still recovering. And drying out (I don't miss the humidity).

 I'll toss in my two cents:
These forums keep me honest; because when I've been involved with other art-based online communities, they've been either echo chambers or traps waiting to be sprung for someone who steps wrong. While I do get a lot of praise and encouragement here for the art I do, I've also gotten told to shut up, fly straight and follow rules, which honestly all came at the right times. The key is that what I get from the community of creatives that hang out here is not just mindless ass-kissing, but people really hungry for what's best. My first exposure to all this was The Engine, and I like what this has been allowed to become over time as well. But hands down, it's forced me to produce better art, better thinking and better reach for things I had no idea I wanted to know more about.

Thanks for that; it's a rare treat.

Vague point being: message boards were the point of connection. And Whitechapel's been no different: not for me, but for you. Hell, we already have our first married couple that met through Whitechapel.
That stuff always tickles my fancy at least a little. I know a whole slew of couples who met through CBR, and two of them have even reproduced.

Oddly, the son from the second union bears a striking resemblance to Jonah Weiland.
