I should be in bed. Hours ago. Migraine kept that from happening, as did a lovely chat with a lovelier lass. I tried to kill the migraine with pills, 1.5 hours ago.

On page 5 Luke and Mark have mentioned not punching a hole in Northampton, because nobody would miss it and thier football team is shit. (Which is true.)
Then they mention Lancashire. Whats the most successful football team in Lancashire?

Manchester United. I do hope they dont punch a hole in my beloved hometown! (Waits for Warren to make a comment about how it would be an improvement.)
Although it would be a good tie in to bring Alice back into the story. Could it turn out that her new friends destroyed her home city in thier first act of retalliation? Maybe thats why Conner had a soft spot for her in the beginning?

I love how much younger, softer and more dangerous they are in the flashbacks. Along with valid points about deterrence, they're using the shitness of a place's football team as a determining factor in destroying it. It's such a teen thing to do. It also interesting how Luke is acting as the fulfilling the role of pariah/bastard in a useful way by calling Mark out on how far along his plans are as well as by pointing out to Sirkka the flaws of continued non-violence. And look how much wilder and angrier Jack seems.

I'm excellent! This weekend should prove to be much fun. I'm off to a halloween party tonight (so what if it's the 30th?) to see loads of friends I haven't seen in ages, my girlfriend is picking up a kitten that we've rescued, and we'll be seeing my folks on Saturday for a massive indian takeaway, booze and a movie to celebrate my mum's birthday.

Agreeing with the others, I'm really enjoying this flashback despite the roof-hanger. I love seeing these characters in their teenage naiveté and ambition, before they've been taught the very real consequences of their actions. Mark is a fascinating character, and it causes us to look back on their first three books in a different light. Sure, they've said before that the reason why the world is this way is their fault, but now we also know why. Although I've found that in most of your (Ellis') works characters are more vehicles for plot, walking themes, or enjoyable more than interesting, but this cast definitely has a lot to dig into. Every week this comic makes getting up on Fridays bearable!

@cjtremlett - It's pretty much assumed that the government wants to capture them for their powers. Once the government (any government) found out what the FreakAngels could do, they'd seriously want to experiment. Of course, we don't know how they found out about them, but since they are very young yet, it's not hard to see them making mistake or two and attracting attention. I could be wrong, but I don't think they neccesarily did anything TO the military or police or government that sparked retaliation and hunting... it's just because of what they are and can do.

I also have a cat in my lap, and FreakAngels on my computer. Life is, indeed, good.

This month/week has been doing everything in it's power to murder me. Hasn't been very nice to my friends either, at that.

Carrying over from the last week, it's now clear that Sirrka is there too - she was just hidden behind Luke last ep. - which I rather suspected. So far we've yet to see either Kait or Miki - but I'm not sure which, as it's yet to be clarified who of those two it is sulking in the far corner.

For myself, I can't help but want to think that's going to be somehow very pivotal to them doing what they do - in a suddenly having their hand forced way, rather than thinking it further through before it's done. To elaborate, I think that one is caught alone, and hard pressed, drawing the rest in and making them over-do it in a moment of panic/anger.

That being said, I'm looking forward to being ENTIRELY wrong, and enjoying the show. Because we know it's going to be one helluva show.

Hiroshima ended the war. Most historians would agree an invasion of the Home Islands would have cost a million ALLIED casualties, not to mention the inevitable Japanese civilian casualties. Hell, 100,000+ people were killed in the fire-bombing of Tokyo and that was with conventional explosives.

Was there an element of racism inherent in the use of atomic weapons against the Japanese? Probably. Would they have nuked Berlin or Munich or Cologne, if the Germans hasn't already capitulated? We'll never know. We DO know that Curtis LeMay was quoted as saying "When we get done, Japanese will only be spoken in Hell."

I don't want to start a debate about Hiroshima. Just saying, it ended the war, which is what I read "our own Hiroshima" as intending to do : end the war against the Freakangels. Make the GubMint reasonably terrified of them and leave them alone. Didn't work out that way, as we all know.

Speculation Time - they punch a hole in somewhere uninhabited - the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, say - only it's a bigger hole than they wanted to punch. Tsunamis, earthquakes, disruption of the power grid, nuclear stations going offline (or even exploding) - voila, the Drowned World. Arkady, using the package for remote viewing, seeing that "it's gotten worse" elsewhere, like America or Europe or such-like.

If I was on the middle of them, that idea will sound reasonable for me.

A bunch of teenagers not knowing the real extent of their powers, cornered... They have to do something to survive, and in a situation like that, all ideas are welcome. In a hopeless situation, anything is better than doing nothing. They'll regret later, of course, but they didn't knew.

Many scientists involved in the making of the first atomic bomb on USA, soon after the test bomb exploded for the first time, where in regret and tried to stop the military, but it was too late, the bomb was out of their hands. It's an analogue situation. You need to see the damage so to regret. No one has seen an atomic explosion before, and the surprise was big indeed.

"Their own Hiroshima" is accurate, in this sense. But with a difference: Hiroshima was not the discovery of the atomic bomb, Hiroshima was the first practical use, the bomb was detonated before many times and everybody knew the damage it would cause, the many lives that will be lost. And, in the Freakangels context, they didn't know the extent of the damage they're about to cause.

Well, all that's left for me is to wait for another week. I'm enjoying the show.

Mark is really creepy. Just the way he's talking about annihilating a city in such a matter of fact way is more terrifying than if he was cackling maniacally about it.

And I've wondered for a long time about the situation in the rest of the world. I'm not even sure if the whole world is flooded, or just Britain. It sounds like they were indeed just attempting to flood a single city - but something went wrong.

The hundred were clearly more than a drop in the bucket, so their city doesn't have tens of thousands, but couldn't have been a shift in order of magnitude since the community didn't merge with the vagabond troupe, they absorbed them.

Sherlock - I can't help thinking that's a reference to "Two Thousand Holes in Blackburn, Lancashire" (you all better know the song; I'm not THAT old that I'm the only one for whom the song started playing the moment they said it).

Oddly enough, I like Mark here. Yes, he's presenting as a sociopath; but so are KK and Caz. I think he's aware everyone is fucking pissed. Caz's end note to the pages indicates that Mark was tapping into a larger anger there. From this series of panels, I get the sense that Luke would've dragged it there anyway; Mark just got them to view it as reasonable.

(Which might be one of the reasons Luke is such an asshole - he knows no one would follow HIS lead.)

As I recall, there's three hundred people living in Whitechapel prior to in the influx of the new refugees. The Freakangels haven't been truly building infrastructure (which is part of their problem) so much as adapting and fixing up existing infrastructure. Interesting that we also establish that Luke was a virgin before the world "ended."

And before we jump too much on Mark, let's consider the price we're willing to inflict on others for our security. I don't recall British casualties, but American's lost something like three thousand people during 9-11. And we've inflicted tens of thousands of casualties on Iraqies and Afghanies. And as a whole, we're okay with that. Just think about how often the newspeople talk about Allies casualties (and often simply American casualties) and ignore others.

So, with all that in mind, it's not really all that hard to imagine the Freakangels, hunted as they were, deciding to take action to preserve their lives and freedom and to hell with anyone else.

Maybe the FAs protected (shielded) Great Britain from whatever-physical-catastrophe-it-was, to some extent, and the other countries (the rest of the planet) had it worse.

Most of the the rest of planet wouldn't be affected (only the coastal areas would be flooded) by a simple change in sea level that barely floods London.

Admitedly that would destroy ports, and existing shipping. What we don't know yet is, what was it that caused industrial society to fall apart: no more central/regional/local government, no more people going to their jobs? If international trade were disrupted, that would be momentous; but perhaps society could survive that (they did survive it 70 years ago).

I certainly don't have a hard time putting myself in their situation. Me vs them, obviously it's going to be me. Add into that the fact that they're all disillusioned rebel teenagers fighting The Man and it is actually a very reasonable situation to have happened. Who hasn't fantasized about remaking the world in our image? Now what if you actually could. And then very angry people were pointing guns at you and threatening to shoot.

As for the atomic bomb debate, in very simple terms it's a very easy, effective solution to a messy problem. But we haven't dropped an atomic bomb since then for very good reasons, just as the FreakAngels go on to try to keep their powers on the downlow and only for helping the people they fucked over. It's an interesting analogy. Especially considering the social psychology that goes into making group decisions – Mark here is doing some very easy social hacking to bring everyone around to his idea, and one can only wonder his motivations for that.

re: KK and Caz agreeing to the psychic bombing, we have to remember how many very sensible people were convinced of the atomic bomb as a rational way to end the war. Should we notice that it's the two engineers being implicated here?

We still don't know how they got their powers, why they have them, why each of them seems to have been given a "century baby"-esque role to play, or why the government is bringing the military into London to hunt them down.

Yes, the HIroshima line was creepy but I read it as he wanted to end their situation, or at least get the government to leave them alone. It'll be interesting to see the extent of their destructive powers and what happens in the aftermath. I wonder if they were all born together and grew up in a pack or if they discovered one another over time. With their mind reading abilities I wonder if a mass call was set up and then they decided to group together, after all what will their families think? Hm

Not that this matters but I wonder about Arkady's and Sirkka's hair and how they're able to have purple hair yet everyone has dark hair, or maybe white if they're albinos of a sort?, and continue to keep it up after the world ended. It's not relevant to the plot, but it has me curious hehe.

So...i've been a forum lurker......and finally got some time to reading FreakAngels....I did it all in one sitting. This story is AMAZING. I love every single inch of it.

Admittedly I read chapter 74 1st...so I met Mark right away. Very cool to start at the beginning knowing that this kind looking young man was the idea guy for punching a hole in....the earth? who knows...can't wait to find out.

I was totally thinking about this as well. At first I was thinking it might just be a sex-linked gene (girls get purple, boys get black), but not all the girls have purple. So not so straightforward as all that, it's possible I'm missing a really obvious way for this gene to be passed on but I'm a little too tired and drunk to think of all of them. I wonder if our fearless leaders have thought of the biology of it or whether it was just done for the pretty colour scheme.

There was the flashback scene to Kait as a child using her power to (attempt to) revive the bird the local cat had gotten a hold of that implies they've had these abilities from a very young age - so I don't think puberty had much to do with it.

I guess it also proves that Kait isn't that fast a learner since her "Jack the Ripper" victim fared about as well as the bird did, but then again, I'd guess it's also not as simple as learning to ride a bike. Or swim. Conner.

This flashback is getting interesting. Great story.
Now I want to know more about the "end of the world" than the follow up to episode 0072.
But this could take a while.
Even if these are impulsive teenagers, they're still British.
Doing something drastic or irrational, or viciously mean has to get through their sense of decency and fair play. (HEAR HEAR!)
I'm thinking that perhaps for what happens to the world they must get pushed over the brink, but if they're going to discuss it in open forum this could take a very long time and many pages.

So this is how it went down? looks exactly like how I imagined a bunch of angsty super teens to decide the fate of a city...heh

oh this weekend was weird.
my ex girlfriend came in to visit and we decided to go to a party friday night. I dropped the kids off at a friends house and when i came back, she had already decided we were all going dressed as super heroes. she was batgirl (the only one with a ready made costume dammit), and I managed to pull off a pretty sweet green lantern. We mutilated one of my husband's shirts and turned it into a kinda tube top over some black mesh and under a little leather jacket. Then I took some green eyeliner and eye shadow and gave myself a domino mask. I was quite proud. my husband was nightwing (with a blue scraggly mohawk...)
The party was a weird kind of rollercoaster of uncomfortable emotions...I hadn't been out socializing in years really, and as soon as I got there this adorable little red head sat herself at my feet and proceded to flirt heavily. I was totally caught offgaurd, and being the big awkward dork that I am, I didn't know what to say, and she ended up leaving dejectedly after about twenty minutes. sigh...
but then an ex friend who annoys the hell out of me every time I go in public around him, started in on missing us and blah blah, and really kept me rather upset the whole night. I got consoled a little when he got his nose broken "accidently" during some stupid party drama that happened in another room.
I also managed to step in a young couples....leavings...on the bathroom floor. ew.
so by the end of the night with all the drama and stress, my two glasses of wine had turned to horrible pain in my belly, and so all halloween I was either sick to my stomach or in bed feeling like poo. I slept through trick or treating...;(

I know what you mean about being more interested in the flashback than the rooftophanger being resolved. I keep imagining that this entire volume is going to be flashbacks and we'll have to wait for volume 5 to find out what happens next, but I doubt it'll go that way.

Not really. I will say that I've noticed that all the Freakangels are naturally dark-haired from what I can tell. However, since they are all from the same "flat little village" that could easily be from the genestock of people in their hometown. Pale skin, Purple eyes and Psychic powers appear to be the hallmarks of the Package. I recall nothing about hair.

They have psychic powers dammit! Changing hair colour through the simple power of thought is probably just an easy trick. I mean, we've been shown that they've got a certain control over autonomic functions, KK sobering herself up in moments and Kirk lowering his metabolism, for instance. I'd say that the most elemental explanation, the Occam's Razor for me, is that it's just a matter of consciously wanting it. And why not? Dyed hair looks cute on girls.

I read Episodes 1-74 in one sitting and now I am hopelessly an addict. High marks, all. Especialy Mr.'s Ellis and Duffield. Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't episode 75 come out in like, six hours? *taps vein and sterilizes syringe* Dish it up, cookie, junkie needs his yum yums!
