Fell behind today as I got absolutely nothing done. Spent the way with my wife instead, which is not a horrible thing. Tomorrow (or today as it just passed 12a) I will probably sequester myself at Barnes & Noble or Borders or something along those lines and just type and type and type....

i got by 40k today. most of the work for that was done yesterday. today was just picking through the 300 words i stopped short of yesterday.
if my book is in three acts then i'm just finishing act two. kind of. which means that act three should wrap up in 10k, which seems perfectly reasonable. except i'm not entirely sure what those 10,000 words are going to be. though it won't stop me.

for the likes of wax poetic struggling to join the dots, how do other people slog on? certainly there was a woman at today's write in was asking that - if you are sticking on a scene, how do you keep going.

my answer? have a separate document for each "chapter" (or scene, or whatever; this year i'm starting a new document every day). clearly mark the document as being Scene X. and then write through each scene you can write. that way you still keep writing. usually, that loosens up the thought processes, and can be enlightening on the gaps that need to be closed. of course, it can be tricky with things like continuity, but its a fact of life, sometimes you don't realise something cool till near the end anyway, and have to go back and add it. so keeping going is better than stopping, i just assume something will need work anyway. anyway, thats what works for me, how about everyone else?

@RemotePush: when I get stuck on a scene, I usually try to just find a good "cliffhanger" point of it.. whether it's a character just asking a rhetorical question, or having the characters enter a new area... someplace where I can cut to a new scene with different characters. Once I write out the new scene, I can usually jump back to the original scene and the issue resolves itself somehow. Of course this really works best when you're writing a story that involves different characters in different locations.

This year every scene is like that, so I've been jumping back and forth a lot between different characters.

I just broke 24K. 25 is sooooo close.
Got to whining at a friend about being stuck. She looked at me like I was whining even though it was a good story idea, and suddenly I realized what I was doing and figured out the direction to go in. House-guest of awesome arrived in tact last night and got me to talking about the story - not too much, but enough to hear it again, and also she was supportive and so the ego boosted just enough to get excited about the writing again.
Didn't actually get that I needed that. Now I do. Will remember for future strangeness.

Just this minute passed 40k. In the last few days, for the first time, I've been writing things that are actually hard to write, instead of rambling fluff or things I had pretty much spelled out in my head already.

Also, earlier in this thread, I'd mentioned that choosing a fairly biographical setting had turned out to be a bit of a curse. Recently, however, I've been finding that the process of going over history is actually making me realise some things about myself that I hadn't previously. So that's sort of a bonus.

Just need a couple of good writing days to get back on track. Still hoping to make 50k before the very last minute.

    hit 46K last night. sweeet.

51,967 as of last night and the main story is DONE. Nanowrimo is once again my bitch.

All I really need to do now is write the sodding framing device which I've been avoiding - one paragraph per act, doesn't really impact on the main story but should break it up nicely. Epilogue ended up a bit happier than I'd expected, but I got pretty much everything I wanted to said. Had the nagging feeling that I might've rushed the final scenes, but going over it, turned out there wasn't anything I could add. Now, to spellcheck!

    @ burntcopper: Well done, you!

I'm still working away towards the target of 80K words: I'm at 73K. The story's starting on down the gradient of the final straight, gaining that final momentum to get it finished.

I have failed to hit God anywhere near his mocking visage, and am shamefully retreating. I have no interest left in hitting 50k any time soon; would rather take my time with writing this than force it for the sake of a word count. A lot of stuff to do this month as it is.
  2.  (7123.12)
I'm at around 42K right now. Should have no problem hitting 50K sometime this week. My book is looking like it will clock in around 65-70K when the first draft is done. Then I'll just be spending time polishing turds till they look like gold.

I'm enjoying this and am glad I participated. It's pretty fun, and a good wake up call in terms of what I can actually be accomplishing with my life in writing. I think this is going to kick me off on quite a jag of writing over the next year, which is kind of the point.

    @ sillypunk: Great stuff!

@ Dario: I'm sorry to hear you won't be making the 50K by the end of the month, mate. Sometimes god ducks and weaves. It's good to hear that you'll be plugging away on your intriguing novel.

@ mercurialblond: You can make that last push!

@Dario I'm right with you. I think while NaNoWriMo's intent is to just get the fucker out, the bigger, better rule for the long run is to write, Write, dammit!

The players are all ready to move into the final act, but I'm still not entirely sure what that final act's going to be. I'm sitting at 80K at the moment. Not even going to estimate how long this is going to turn out anymore, I'll see when it's done.

well, i reached the climax of that scene and passed 43,000, so i'm happy.
feels like its going to be a strange week. and half like i've gone from not sure i'd have enough material to get to teh 50, to not sure that i'll have enough time to finish what needs to be finished.

@Dario - yup that'd be me yawning out the rent behind the desk, for my sins.

Crossed the 40k mark about 15 minutes ago. Right on track to finish up on Monday, though will be trying to get ahead of the game with the short work week. No idea how this thing will wrap up, but I'll definitely make it to 50k on time. Really should start figuring out where this thing is going though, so I can at least aim the characters in the right direction.

Just a couple of days left until the end of this insane month. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. At least I hope that's what that light is... either that, or it's one of those places where everyone just says "move towards the light"

Anyway, figured I'd just ask if anyone had a special NaNoWriMo Soundtrack they were using this year. Mine looked something like this:

    Blondie: Maria
Flogging Molly: Whiskey In the Jar
    Flogging Molly: The Pirate Song
    Flogging Molly: Irish Pub Song
Flogging Molly: Requiem for a Dying Song
Elvis Presley: Hunk of Burning Love
    Elvis Presley: In the Ghetto
Elvis Presley: A little Less Conversation
    Girls Aloud: Walk This Way
    Pipettes: Pull Shapes
    Wreckless Eric: Whole WIde World
Stephen Lynch: The Dungeons & Dragons Song
    Warren Zevon: My Rides Here
Warren Zevon: Hit Somebody (The Hockey Song)
The Long Blondes: Lust in the Movies
The Long Blondes: A knife for the girls

.... can you tell my soundtrack was somewhat influenced by Phonogram?
