It's Friday, but we've got a completely unexpected interlude this week. But Paul, bless his sickly little heart, still managed to rally long enough to give you something pretty to look at, so no whining. (Okay, not *too* much whining.)

Everyone else doing all right? I'm on day three of a drug-resistant headache, m'self -- nothing too debilitating, just damned annoying. Are all of you still alive...?

Just spent the last half hour reading your blog Ariana. Good stuff. Useful tech advice, behind-the-scenes stuff from Warren's site and here, and arguments with Si Spurrier about bacon and syrup. I will stop by again! (Hope yr headache clears up... have you tried smoking some good hash? Ususally works.)

Having a good week - my netlabel's Twitter is accruing followers at a pleasingly fast rate. Haven't seen the download numbers for week 1 yet, but I'm pleased with the response so far. New job's going well too.

I’m alive and doing fine, all is good in my corner of the world as far as I am concerned; my youngest turned 2 on Tuesday and now are home is filled with the joy that is Thomas the tank engine, I’m impressed it is still going strong and that kids still love him so, all though I don’t know why i'm surprised it’s a format that works.

I hope the whole FA team gets better soon flu is a nightmare, and I hope your headaches stay away to Ariana.

Oh what the hell I hope all you whitechapel folks are good too, there that’s enough joy spread far and wide for one day I think.

I've been ill this week too, fairly minor cold, but still needed one day off. One of the things about being a coder is that even a slight offday in terms of being able to concentrate can end up leaving you completely unable to work.

@Flaybo totally agree with you - I've been playing support monkey for the last month as my colleague has been away. Couldn't get any dev done during that time as there was absolutely no chance of getting in the right head space.

And Now it looks like I'll be spending the next three months preparing for Windows 7 and newer version of Office about four months ahead of schedule.

In fact, it's so nice to see all of them together in their young and surly/sullen days that I don't feel like whining about the skip at all.
I will whine if the plague I've been fighting off attacks over the weekend, though.

Awwww, man! I had a friend refer this series to me and I found it so engrossing that I read it in one sitting straight through. Then when I ran out and nearly vapor locked I consoled my self with the fact that I was right on time and that I would recieve a new installment tomorrow. I should have seen it coming. Sorry everyone this was my fault if I didn't have such rotten luck this wouldn't be happening. Get well soon everyone. Junkie needs his yum yums!

With a page that pretty to look at, I'm not going to complain about skip weeks one little bit, particularly given the circumstances. If I could run around and squirt y'all with a magical Cure For All Diseases like in that really hokey Doctor Who episode, I would.

Anyway, I am fine, a shitty working week has turned out pretty ok and I don't feel like I'm about to have a panic attack any more. The weekend is shaping up favourably. As always, I Can't Complain.

I know Paul said it isn't a splash page, but is it canon? I'm excited to see that damage to the pylon: because I've been wondering how civilization collapsed, what physical damage there might have been that could destroy society without killing everyone ... and wrecking the whole electrical grid somehow would certainly I think contribute. In real life sometimes lines are downed, even pylons warped, by the weight of ice that accumulates during a winter ice storm (freezing rain). Normally too such a storm only affects one region of the country ... North American ice storm of 1998 for example says, "Many power lines broke and over 1,000 pylons collapsed in chain reactions under the weight of the ice, leaving more than 4 million people without electricity, most of them in southern Quebec, western New Brunswick and Eastern Ontario, some of them for an entire month."

i saw the word "interlude" and let out quite loud cry of despair that was completely inappropriate for a photography lesson. However, all was forgiven when I saw the amazing artwork and that it was available as wallpaper.

My week was good; I finally went to see “Wicked: The untold tale of the witches of Oz” on Wednesday with a whole bunch of friends, so I’ve been singing Defying Gravity literally non-stop since.

I had a mild form of the nerd flu too, but only sniffles so not too bad. I found that the cold and flu stuff you dissolve into hot water is quite good, but only if you add a LOT of sugar to make it taste even slightly ok. Get better soon, everyone.

Doing some sound work for students, two different shoots in two days with little turn around. I really gotta stop doing that. So I will be a slave of the devil god caffeine, likely though his strongest prophet Coffee.

@daffyd I was dragged to Wicked a couple of times when Ana Gasteyer was Elfaba and it dominated the Oriental Theater in Chicago. Good Show, I wonder if the other books will be made into plays.

Autumn here is Normandy is mesmerizing, so many bright colours twirling in the air. Sometimes rain keep us insode, though, we read in the libraries.

Aside from getting electorally kicked in the teeth by the allegedly fair-minded folk of Maine on the marriage equality issue, I'm doing okay. A piece for the online magazine Suite 101 went up quickly to my surprise, and I have to start on the next one. Cheered myself up greatly by catching Agnes Varda's wonderful THE BEACHES OF AGNES the other night.

Paul's mention of anti-vaccination madness has personally hit me. I've been regularly getting YouTube videos from a correspondent who's trying to warn me of the horrors of unsafe vaccines. Then again, this is the same person who agreed that the Matthew Shepard Act was 2009's PATRIOT Act would somehow crush the First Amendment and bring about the fiendish New World Order. At the same time, she claimed she wasn't a homophobe.

Im sorry about the headaches, Ms. Ariana. Have you heard of an herbal supplement called Fever few? My mom has extreme migranes, and i read that fever few taken daily helps to reduce the migraine and make it bearable. So far, it's working for her. It might work for you.

Unless, your migraine's are caused by people. In which case, there is nothing that can be done.

About where you can see covers what I made? I don't know that there's really enough to put them all in one place, yet...! Shivering Sands, Aetheric Mechanics, and Captain Swing are the three big ones (The latter two both out from Avatar). Other than that, most of my design work lately has been logos and tee shirts. I put some things up on Flickr... eventually...

(Oh! Actually I did do the cover of Jamais Cascio's Hacking The Earth -- But I didn't take the picture, so I don't think of it, heh.)

Milton fucking Keynes is an atrocity. So many damn roundabouts it even confused my satnav. It's just like a never-ending amorphous blob of stuff like a bad acid trip or a nightmare you can't wake up from. i read the justification for the place on wikipedia and can see that there's a perverse logic to the place but I can't see how anyone can live there and not go insane.

I must admit that sometimes I like the Interludes not because they are lovely (which they are) or funny (yes) or filled with things that I must buy right now with my imaginary bank account (nods a little bit too enthusiastically. ow.), but because it's nice to have a breather and a chance to catch up a little bit again.

Also, the wallpaper is gorgeous and I hope it continues to have nothing to do with anything but itself. And Paul's brilliance.

You know, what's interesting to me is that the word I most often find myself wanting to use to describe Mark is "harmless." Warren has spend the year and a half or so building Mark up into this terrifying psychic bogeyman and when we finally "meet" him, he's this affable fellow wearing that goofy-looking track suit, looking a bit like a hapless dilettante who's slumming with the rest of the 'angels while figuring out new and entertaining ways to waste "Daddy's" money. He doesn't seem like somebody who'd be taken seriously. He certainly doesn't seem like the mover and shaker behind the act that "ended the world." Which is sort of the point, I suppose.
