    Hi Matt,
    Thanks for being a great inspiration to me as a starting comics writer. You've given me excellent advice in person and your drawing of an Aladdin Sane elephant in my sketch book is treasured. The nicest thing an established comics creator has ever said to me about my work was, "I look forward to reading it." That was you. Just for that, I am eternally grateful and will always buy comics with the name "Matt Fraction" on the cover.

    My question is about your (and your family's) very public activity on social networking like twitter, podcasts, flickr, blogs etc. It seems like a lot of your personal life is exposed and out there for anyone to consume. Was that a conscious decision for you and Kelly Sue to market yourselves and your work? Or are you both just comfortable sharing a lot of intimate life experiences that other creators would rather keep hidden? It's something that would make me nervous personally, given some of the scary interactions I've had at cons on the creator side of the table. Is this one of the reasons you use a pen name? Does it cause awkward social interactions when fans presume to "know" you from your online persona and approach you in real life?

    two questions for you and if you answered them before i'm sorry to repeat them. first question is a real one and the second one is also real but also the kiss ass one.

    1: how does someone get recognized as a writer to get a shot at working for a company like marvel? i dont write fan-fiction but i do think i'm pretty good with a pen. so, i'd just like to know what is the sort of path a budding writer needs to follow.

    2: i really like your entire run on iron man, and i think you have a great take on norman osborn (see how i'm building up the kiss ass question), seeing as how these two characters are so vital to the dark reign storyline, why aren't you handling the siege event? it's like marvel only trusts bendis, and while i like him, when he does all these events it's as if the entire marvel u speaks in his voice. i know you aren't suppose to talk shit about someone you work with, but what is the deal? does bendis have pictures of joe quesada in a compromising position? (see how i built you up by taking down bendis? who says you dont learn anything in public school?).

    I had to create an account just to ask my question, Bendis would never do that to me. jk. Anyways, my question is in regards to Uncanny X-men, and particularly Namor and the Atlantians. Do you plan to give Namor a long term spot on the x-team, and if so, how does his kingdom play into that? Also, how do you decide among other X authors who gets which characters? Is there a lot of sharing or do you have to tip-toe around each others stories?

    Which X-men characters do you loathe? Which one do you love? Which one do you enjoy writing the most, that you didn't think you would?
    You seem to have really found a good beat on X-men. Huzzah!

    Also how do you feel about McGuire coming back to coach with the Cardinals? Have you always been a Cardinals fan? Or just since Larussa came? Who is your favorite all-time cardinal? My family is like...generations of Cardinals fans. I don't even really like baseball anymore, but my mom and grandmother are insane cardinals fans. We have the springfield cardinals down here and my mom goes to their minor league games...needless biographical information, but these are the things I think about when I read your tweets about the Cardinals.

    @Matt, Regarding your research into railroads and research in general.

    How far past "write what you know" are you? The first fiction of yours I read was Five Fists of Science, which is pretty much batshit insane. From the faux-historicism of that to wacky world-spanning stuff in Casanova to the hard science of Invincible Iron Man, you seem to be driven by the hard scifi stuff. Do you ever feel the urge to draw a quiet personal story about a 13-year old girl at gymnastics camp? Or a novella about a married couple driving across the country to move to Portland? Grounded, personal stuff vs. the Great Macguffin-- are you definitely committed to the latter?

    Also, about railroad spikes-- have you tried phoning up a small museum? Baltimore's B&O Railroad Museum is full of friendly, crazy-smart people who'd answer any question for a inquisitive and polite young man like you.

    I'm going to throw my two cents in on this one because it's largely my wheelhouse.

    No, it's not been a conscious decision; there's no attempt at "branding" or anything so calculated at work.

    This is going to be long and rambling because, frankly, I have very complicated opinions on the matter.

    I don't know exactly how to explain it. There are a few contributing factors, I think. For one thing, we don't live anywhere near our families, so we use the web to help them feel a part of our lives, particularly Henry's. And, you know, we met on the internet -- on the WEF, as it happens. To this day, some of my dearest friends are people with whom I've had first contact on the 'net. As the years have passed and the internet has evolved into something... well, less charming in my estimation... and Fraction's profile in particular has grown, it's been tough for me to make the adjustment to "closing doors and windows," as he puts it.

    I *like* to talk about these things. I like to talk about my family and our day-to-day lives. It's the human condition and it's interesting to me. And fuck anybody who doesn't want to read tweets about my two year old's latest adventures. Don't follow me. Do I give a shit? I'm an addict in recovery. 9 years in, if I've learned anything -- and believe me, I'm a slooooow learner where my junkie brain is concerned -- I've learned that keeping secrets keeps me sick. I have a kind of... mal-adaptation that can be combated simply by talking about my thought processes. It's weird, but it works. Now, do I have to talk about them on the internet? No, of course not. But it works for me.

    Still, the world is changing. The internet is changing. As Fraction's fanbase grows, we will need to start closing more of those windows. As Henry develops into a young man, his life will become *his* story to tell and how much of it gets shared will be his decision to make.

    There's no manual for this stuff... we're figuring it out as we go along.

    Luckily, Fraction's fans, and, you know, both of mine [Hi Eric! Hi George! Hi... Mom.], have been for the most part very kind and civil people. One or two nutters (particularly when he was working on The Punisher, as I recall) but far and away the majority of the people we interact with are delightful. I like meeting them. I like talking to them about our lives and theirs.

    We have a friend -- higher profile than either of us -- who has had some threats made to his family, and some very unpleasant interactions. It's a cautionary tale and something that scares the shit out of me. But that same friend will be the first to tell you that his public persona invites confrontation. Now, that is not to be read as blaming the victim -- NOTHING justifies threats. But I've found that sharing our family life and sort of, uh, showing our bellies invites people to do the same with us. People like to talk to us about their kids. I'm good with that.

    Did you read the NYTimes piece on Michael Chabon and Ayelet Waldman recently? That struck a chord with me. Ayelet and Michael have taken a lot of shit from crazies and the gawker crowd, but they're true to who they are. I think Ayelet has been incredibly brave in discussing her late-term abortion and I think she's done a great service to women in sharing her experience in such stark terms. And you know, we've spent time with them and their kids and they are the most delightful, unpretentious people. If HL grows up to be anything like the Chabon children, I'll be very proud indeed.

    Wow. And right on cue, I just got an email:

    I miscarried. If you can call it that - I went in for my first appt and my uterus was empty. Now I have to decide between seeing if nature takes it's course or if I should do a D&C.

    Any been there/done that info you could pass along?


    After Fraction wrote about our 2006 miscarriage in the Casanova backmatter, we got some ugly mail. My favorite being, "Just because it happened to you doesn't make it interesting." HOWEVER, we got FAR MORE mail from people thanking him for talking about it and sharing their experiences and grief. 1 in 4 pregnancies end in miscarriage. (Probably more than that, when you figure in chemical pregnancies that women don't even know about before they're lost.) Most people don't know that because people don't talk about it. It really does help to know that you're not the only one going through something like that. You're not bad, you haven't failed. It's just a thing that happens. And it happens a lot.

    Another person I think about a lot when I ponder this particular topic -- "sharing," not miscarriage -- is Anne Lamott. I don't know her personally but I love her work and I've found comfort in her experiences on more than one occasion. I'm grateful to her for the generosity that she's shown talking about her life and Sam's. And she has, I think, found a balance as Sam's aged -- letting us in on her life as his mother, without entirely sacrificing his privacy. She's very clear in her books that Sam has veto power on any of the stories that involve him and anything she's written about him has only seen print with his permission.

    Joan Didion springs to mind as well.

    Okay, I've rambled on far longer than I'd planned to and I don't even remember the question, much less whether I've answered it or not.

    But those are my thoughts on the subject. Right now. I reserve the right to change my mind on a whim and retract everything tomorrow.

    That's how I roll.

    Kelly Sue I just want to say kudos on your sentiments. It's nice to see such honesty. I didn't know anything about you, or Matt's, personal lives (i have a weird thing about letting that kind of information come to me 'naturally'. Instead of going looking for it, unless i'm doing research for something, i like to stumble across it like i did with your post).

    Anyway, just wanted to say that i found it very admirable. Thanks.

    Hi Matt,

    Just wanted to say that Casanova has entertained me in ways that very few comic books ever have. You really created something special there. I've never felt the need to meet many comics folks before (and that's not a slight against creators, I'm just fine letting them be them and their work be their work) but I'd love to be able to shake your hand at a convention some day and say thanks for what you do.

    This may be too personal of a question, so feel free to take a pass if it is, but do you consider yourself a spiritual person? Do you have religion in your background? Just curious.

    I gave an interview a couple days before the Spidey-Cap-Abe Lincoln story me and Andy Gunshow MacDonald did last President's Day (Called "Gettysburg Distress", readable for free here) that got misinterpreted and picked up a couple places as me doing more than that but-- no, no Spider-Man project.

    I need an engaging documentary. Any suggestions?
