    I was thinking Marzipan.

I want to mention I'm loving Invincible Iron Man, more than I expected to, and more than almost any other book I'm reading. I also really loved Iron Fist, and I'm enjoying Uncanny X-Men. I'm mentioning that so I don't come off as some disgruntled comic book jerk, but I do want to ask about what happened with the Order. I've seen this only vaguely addressed, and I can't help feeling like readers of that book are owed something more than that. The Order had completely won me over, and then suddenly quality dipped, the artwork became sort of a mess, and it ended out of nowhere with a surprise reveal that it was going nowhere because it'd all been a prologue for Iron Man the whole time, which at the time I wasn't sure I'd even be picking up. Could you clear up exactly what happened there?

there's an awful lot i'd like to say but think i'll abstain from most of it; alejandro addressed the meat of the business realities anyway. but: when i started the book, i didn't know I'd be writing Iron Man. I had two notions, at the onset, for whom the big bad of year one would be: a new stane character (I was in LA researching the book when Jeff Bridges was announced as playing Stane in the film; I thought somebody should put a Stane back on the board for whomever was doing Iron Man when the film came out), or midas, from Morrison and Jones' MARVEL BOY. I think maybe three in I locked onto the Stane idea, and moved Midas to year two.

When word came down we were officially losing Barry in all capacities, I pushed to end the series. I want to say there were three options I put together-- ending at 10, 12, or 14, but i only remember what 10 and 14 were. Ten was what I would've done had we not pulled the plug, minus the stories that would've set year two in motion-- midas, a quarry, mulholland's replacement, etc. But the story was the same: a guy who hated Stark so much he fucked with "the crown jewel of the initiative" just to get at him. The Order at the end would've been left feeling like second bananas; that their big villain didn't even give a shit about them because they weren't respected or taken seriously. But beat for beat, save the set up for the next year, you got the story as planned. that i ended up on iron man, and had set myself up with the Order, wasn't known to me until #9 was in the can. I think it was 9. The baby was brand new at that time so my memory is fuzzy.

that you were disappointed in the work I accept my responsibility for, but you got the story I'd have told whether the book was cancelled or not; that you feel "owed something more than that" speaks to a sense of entitlement I don't wholly understand. I can talk about what we all deserve, though: we all deserve a marketplace that allows for books that don't come with power rings or variant covers. we all deserve a marketplace that can sustain and support new ideas, strange ideas, weird ideas. we deserve an industry, as creators, that wants more than the same thing seven hundred times a year. we all deserve an industry that's healthy and diverse. and we don't have it.

Any chance we'll see you teaching a comics course at Portland State University, a la Diana Shutz and Brian Bendis?

If I'm invited? I'd love to. that'd be amazing. The brief times I've taught before were fantastic experiences.

What was the most difficult comic script you ever wrote? difficult to write? difficult to read?
  4.  (7178.7)

Okay, so with Cass going color (breaks my heart personally) and a Gula collection coming out, will we get a 100% Cyan version, or just a full color version?

Why does it break your heart? It's going to allow the book to exist, and the coloring is... let me put it this way: the twins once told me, in all caps, that COLOR IS THE DEVIL. Except when Fábio colored Bá, then it was okay. Then Dave Stewart colored Bá, and it was COLOR IS THE DEVIL EXCEPT FOR FÁBIO AND DAVE STEWART. And then and then and then. So... to call the boys exacting over their coloring is an understatement. It's going to look amazing. The stuff I've seen already looks amazing. You're gonna be fine. unclench.

I dunno if we'll get a Cyan collection; I'd like to, just to settle my own OCD, but i suspect if it happens it'll be down the road as a very limited, once-in-a-lifetime, hey-settle-your-OCD edition. but that's a giant maybe.

This probably answers itself since the spot colors don't sell as well as full color, there's probably not a big market for the spot color version, huh?

retailers referred to the book, to my face, as being in black and white. and they ordered accordingly. part of the reason we used pure C for v2 was so nobody would ever make the mistake again. but that, combined with the price point, allowed for atrophy in the numbers we couldn't support.

And and and I wanna ask about the colorist and publisher but you said in the recent podcast that news would break soon so... I'll just put those out there for you if you want to answer or hint at them.

you've asked and answered your own question there.

do you write your scripts when Land's on the title differently. I.E: tailor your scripts on the Land arcs to better suit his art style? Just curious.

yeah. but i write differently for everybody. land, terry, salva, fábio, bá, sanders, aja, whomever. it's not one-size-fits all.

and don't be jerky, man. c'mon.

    Well said, man.

I guess I should ask a geeky question, but my heart's not in it. Ummm.... Do you ever plan on picking up on any of the bits left over from Adam Warren's Iron Man: Hypervelocity? Either the characters or the Marvel Universe transhumanist subculture?

why aren't you handling the siege event?

it's not my story. without... without getting into stuff i can't talk about, it's quite simply not my story to tell. i've maybe helped push and move pieces on the board towards it but when it's all said and done you'll see that nobody BUT brian could or should do it. it would be as ridiculously unfair as if JMS did my WMW story, or I did Greg and Jeph's Hulk thing. It's not my tale to tell. the rest of your question, kidding or not, is snarky, sucky, and unfair. You don't like brian's stuff, fine, but i clearly do, i clearly like him as a friend. don't slag on my friend to me and think i'll just laugh it off or whatever. be cool.

Jon, respectfully, your twitter feed is kind of giving me the creeps.

Sorry you didn't like the answer you got, but I hope when someone slags on your friends, you have the strength of character to say you disagree. You're absolutely entitled to like what you like and dislike what you dislike, but people are similarly entitled not to join that choir.

No one meant you any personal offense.

oh just, like, personal preference, I guess. I dig spot colors. It really let the line art shine. And those two, ya know, that's some fucking line art that should shine.

I'm not worried about color. I have complete faith in the three of you. And yeah, you echoed a lot of the things Ive thought about. It let's the book exist. That's fucking aces. I've missed Casanova a lot. I'd rather it be in color than not at all.

I suppose there's some part of me, the idealist or some other pretentious shit that hates when art, like capital A "art" doesn't get to exist in it's ideal form because people need to eat. But I don't pay my rent with a pocket full of dreams and I know none of you do either. So like, I don't begrudge anyone the deacision made. Or the necessity of the situation.

I remember when Cass was up for an award under "best black and white comic" or whatever it was. I remember you saying the cyan was to make sure that the B&W thing didn't persist. But it did. I know.

And when I really think about it? I know, as I said, that you guys are going to do a fucking great job with the colors. I know it'll probably be Dave or Fabio doing it. And shit man, if it puts the book in more hands and helps make it the success if deserves to be, and keeps another, as you mentioned, non power ring, weird, different, interesting comic on the stands than that's all that matters. Sorry if it came off as otherwise.

Babble babble shit, sorry. Just, a chance to talk to you about my favorite comic? Can't pass that up. Even if it means I'm babbling at nothing with no expected reply. This feels like when you and Abhay talked about Cass way back when.

Anyway, thanks for this and Casanova and the reply and and and... Thanks

Very happy to hear that Cass is alive and kicking. Incidentally, last time you were here, I asked about the collected edition of Gula, and you advised me to get off my ass and get the single issues instead (my words, not yours. You were extremely polite). Which I did. And, beyond loving the comic itself, I really enjoyed the backmatter, to a degree where I was kind of annoyed about missing it for the first series. So thanks for the advice. And the comic, obviously.

That was a pretty long aside...

What do you think of Longbox, and digital distribution of comics in general? Particularly as a vehicle for smaller, more experimental comics that might have problems finding purchase in the direct market?

    Hey Matt,

I'm glad to hear that Cass will be returning in a format that will allow for greater exposure. It's a book, that for me, is the equivalent of a great album (obviously the point) One that I can return to time and time again, each "listen" a new experience because of all the layered tracks of awesome. I for one am amped on the idea of a full color book, and the transition seems like a natural one, since the first two albums are essentially part of a double album. (I think you described 'Gula' as the negative space that surrounds 'Luxuria' at one time, maybe I'm mistaken. Either way, that's a pretty great way of putting it) Anyway, your statement about DIAMOND DOGS essentially unlocking V3 is just the kind of thing that makes me love the book, and your work (AND my idea of what your PROCESS is) ((I'm a bit of a process junkie))

'Stark Disassembled' YES PLEASE. The new cover design looks great (nice get!)

Anyway, question?! The 'backmatter' for Cass V3, do you know yet what/if it will be? (I enjoyed the BM from the previous albums, and understand your desire to NOT do that anymore)

Also:Also: Your favorite album, this year, thus far?

    Thanks for your time!

I don't think you're expected to check the twitter feeds of everyone who posts here. You have, you know... stuff to do.

Anyway, I'd like to give the guy the benefit of the doubt. Hopefully he was just embarrassed and he didn't realize that no one was saying he was WRONG. Whether you've been reading comics for 10 years or 10 minutes, of course you're entitled to like what you like. It's just... don't piss on people's friends and expect them to think you're cute for it. Simple as that.

    Oh well. Moving on.

No, I should have caught the weirdness in the original question, and several others. Sorry.

Zero tolerance from this point on, people.

like I said to Matt, it's idealist bullshit and preference. I'm not mad. I'm over the fucking moon that Cass is coming back. That's all I really care about.

Will I miss the backmatter? Sure, I think a lot of people will. But that's Matt's decision. Will I miss spot colors? Sure, but I won't miss either of those things as much as I'd miss Casanova if it were gone forever. Because it's the stories that I love. Not either of those elements that accompany the story. And we're getting more story so, that's all that matters.

And my opinion amounts to a $2-4 purchase, so fuck me. The amount of people who'll buy Cass in color? I don't k ow what that amounts to, but I bet it's pretty substantial.
