    let me flesh that out a bit more- i don't read reviews of my own stuff. and most current events commentary is so infuriatingly ill-informed that there's no point in reading it as it's always predicated on bad information or assumption. The stuff I like about the very small COMICS folder in my RSS feed is that, by and large, i hear about new things there, obscure things, or old things I never knew about.

    a different sort of bad. the joint pain in my hips, knees, and ankles has subsided so i can at least sit still and i slept pretty okay but my head feels worse and my throat hurts. think i'm still fighting down the fever, too.

    Hey Matt,

    Really digging the Invincible Iron Man storyline. It's just a brilliant subversion, and I can't wait to see how it keeps playing out.

    On that note, I was on a Comics / Graphic Novels panel on Wednesday with Matt Phelan (Storm in the Barn) and Jonathan Maberry (Black Panther). There was a great question from the audience, and I'd very much like to hear your take on it. I can't remember it verbatim, but here's the gist of it:

    It seems that, in terms of superheroes, you had the old school "overpowered' superheroes, and when that started going downhill, we saw the humanization and deconstruction of heroes. As this has become overdone to the point of saturation, what do you think the next step will be?


    Thanks to Warren for continuing to put these Q&A's together, and to all the participants. I've learned a lot just from reading the posts, and it's been incredibly helpful.

    I love comics because well-done comics are like a sensory high. To borrow a bit from Flusser's "Philsophy on Photography" (great, fascinating book), images are like a kind of primal magic. Sometimes, we take the magic for granted, but other times, it just leaps out at us and grabs us in ways that words alone never could.

    But since comics hit words, images, stories, and everything all at once, you're engaging multiple centers of your brain, and awww yeah that's the stuff.

    Sub-Question: I'd really like to write screenplays. But if I couldn't write comics or screenplays, I'd love to be a professional Godzilla wrangler.

    Ever thought about doing a horror comic?


    I did one: JUAREZ, OR, LEX NOVA AND THE CASE OF THE 400 DEAD MEXICAN GIRLS. it ran in 30 DAYS OF NIGHT: BLOODSUCKER TALES.

    Given that comics generally can't do what McKee calls the "cheap shock," what techniques do you think horror comics have over, for example, film?


    See, I don't want to get into, like, McKee bashing, as the guy has a lot of useful tools in the tool box, but he also doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about half the time (like, "No successful movie ever had voice-over," or whatever. Yes. Failures like SUNSET BLVD. and GOODFELLAS and FIGHT CLUB and APOCALYPSE NOW and...) on the contrary, the "cheap shock" is what got us shut the fuck down and infantilized forever in the fifties. Go back and look at the EC books-- almost all american horror from the late sixities through the early eighties can find its roots there.

    and horror comics have over horror film what any comics have over film, yknow? they're each discrete, distinct media with discrete, distinct techniques to evoke story, mood, and provoke effect.

    What are some of your favorite horror comics? (Aside from Domu, which A. you mentioned previously and B. is impossible to find and not being reprinted at the moment.)


    The EC stuff-- TALES FROM THE CRYPT, VAULT OF HORROR, and HAUNT OF FEAR. FROM HELL. THROUGH THE HABITRAILS. Anything with superman crying.

    What's some of your favorite horror B-movies?


    i love shitty serials-- not like one or two reelers, i mean, like, FRANKENSTEIN-- hardly shitty at the start, in retrospect, but not high caliber and high class by anyone's estimation during it's production-- GODZILLA, FU MANCHU, all that.

    why do you love comics?

    I suppose each time I will answer this question I will give a different version, thanks Kirby you have not asked 'what is art to you?' as well...

    I love comics because I have spent my whole life with them, they are part of my history, I can remember each time of my life for the comic I was reading. I remember reading Gwen Stacy's death a gray sunday afternoon waiting for going to school next morning, I remeber my 11th birthday because I was given the Dark Knight Returns, I remember reading Arkham Asylum while Berlin Wall fell...
    I love comics because I have been drawing them my whole life, waking up early on Saturday mornings while my parents still slept, in classroom while teacher talked, those rainy summers days...
    I love comic because I found it a unique fascinating medium with infinite communication possibilities still to being discovered.
    I love comics because I certainly think they are magical.
    I love comics because they are part of what I am, and hey, I love me.

    is there anything you want to do in addition to or instead of comics?

    I would like to have a beer.

    It's pretty great that I forgot about your 30 Days of Night mini, when I actually own it AND had just read a review of it, before posting. Brainfart.


    (And yeah, the McKee thing is a whole 'nother thing (which, the more I read, I'm inclined to agree with you on)- I just couldn't think of another term for the "quick-turn shock" that happens in horror movies, but because the reader, to a certain extent, controls the pacing of a comic is hindered in the Comics medium.) (Talk about an awkward sentence. And double parenthesis is doubly awkward!)

    i miss shooting. i miss the fun agency jobs. yesterday the doc i went to was in the same building as W+K and i got a little nostalgic for the couple gigs i worked there. They were the One Good Agency. Anyway. Nice to be local, i guess.

    So,I guess last quesion/thing: Cass re issues. As 32 page 'floppies... I'd assumed you'd just go the trade route. But issues puts it on the stands again and again, so, more exposure.

    You'll also be doing trades, yes? Over sized HC or just standard trades? Or does it depend on the performance of the singles?

    And and, the extra bits of Gabrial and Fabio for the opposite arcs... Will those be in issue one of each vol or...?

    Maybe you explained that pretty well and I'm too doped up on pain killers for my back...

    Wow. I want to not read my reviews (not that there has been a ton of them) but can't help it when I see one. Maybe it's an insecurity on my part or a need to know me doing what I like is finding some traction with others. Is not reading those reviews a personal choice or something you honestly don't care about?

    I'm sure you've heard the famous Dock Ellis story of pitching a no-hitter while tripping on LSD-- I'd never heard a first hand account of it, but I guess he did an interview a few years back where he told the story. Some guy went out and animated it:

    umm... i think i respectfully reject the premise; that reads, to me, again respectfully, like the kind of perspective that really only comes from the basement. I think we had superhero characters as representation of pure Ego-- for any number of reasons, like youth of medium, lack of sophistication in creation, production, and audience; and, this can't be overstated, fear of government reprisal (who, after all, shut down the House of Id, EC because, lest we forget, OURS IS A MEDIUM BORN FROM PORNOGRAPHERS, SMUGGLERS, AND GANGSTERS. But they couldn't stop MAD, which comes up in another line or two). And a gradual introduction of Id into the pop culture of comics-- starting with the ghost memory of EC, going into the marvel era's introduction of angst (well, "angst") and anxiety into the Ego-template, compounded with the psychic horrors of Vietnam, the world from 68-70, and Watergate, gave rise to pure Id. In comics, that maybe meant starting with Peter Parker nervous about money for Aunt May's pills, then flourished with the Undergrounds-- the bastard sons of Harvey Kurtzman, or maybe Alfred E. Newman one and all-- and then THAT wave edged back into the superhero mainstream when the old guard got old and retired or died. suddenly you've got denny o'neil wearing a LEGALIZE IT button around the bullpen, much to Stan's chagrin, and Flo Steinberg getting high in rolling stone and making BIG APPLE COMIX. And then you've got the Detroit cosmic stoners rolling in, you've got comic guys making comics that were born reading comics and never stopped, and now they're horrified and high, and then it's Wolverine, and FORD TO CITY: DROP DEAD, and The Punisher happening months apart. Um... suddenly i'm writing DO ANYTHING... then comes MARVELMAN, the world's first presentation of a superego superhero comic but it's lost to generations. Then comes WATCHMEN and the wrong lessons are learned; DARK KNIGHT wasn't in on its own joke, enormity is mistaken for gravity, and away we go into bloodsportblade and splatterpouchshoulderpad comics...

    So anyway Id begat Id, and that just makes everyone feel dirty, and then we started to see Superego Comics-- Morrison's JLA and Ellis' AUTHORITY are the best examples, post MARVELMAN.

    And so that's basically the dialect, I think. Hagel and Freud, superimposed onto our mythic archetypes, forever repeating a synthesis of psychic states through the guise of escapist myth.

    and stuff.

    fuck i don't even know what i'm talking about anymore.

    i think funny animals are coming back.
