I'm doing a cameo drive as a way to cover my costs for printing the first book of Last Res0rt, by offering folks roles as the Star Org soldiers to be drawn in next book:

Full Details Available Here!

$50 covers the cost of the cameo + an additional conbadge of your special character dressed up in their new Star Org uniform.
$75 gets you the same thing, but with a fancier uniform and a better role in the story as an Officer.

NOTE: When I say "cameo", I mean I'm adding you as a character, not that this is necessarily a one-time appearance. You will be guaranteed at least one appearance (two if you're an officer), but you could be drawn into more panels / pages as needed.

If you'd rather just toss a few bucks my way to help cover the costs, there's a new donation incentive wallpaper as well as some new Zazzle merch. You can check it out at that same link.

Still, books aren't cheap, so I'll take all the help I can get! (Even guest strips!)

Don't mean to be "the cheap one" here, but doesn't $50 and $75 come across as a little steep to you? Might it be better to cut that price at least in half and work with that? You'll probably get more people with a lesser price and maybe even reach your goal that way.

I already charge $25 for a conbadge alone, and the price for a cameo includes a badge with it for quality control. What exactly do I gain by charging the exact same price I do for a conbadge, when the cameo is probably at least as (if not more) valuable than the badge is?

edit: it's not that I don't get what you're saying (charge less -> get more people) but when I'm trying to raise $1000 to print a book I've been working on for the past three years, I would hope that people place a higher value on it than to keep telling me I should give the cameos away for free...

Nobody's saying giving it away for free--you have to be open to criticism, especially well-intentioned and friendly criticism when you put yourself out there. Congrats on keeping your nose to that grindstone for 3 years and (apparently) going the self-publishing/indie route. But you have people who are saying: "I'd be more likely to jump in if it wasn't so expensive." I suppose you'll find out sooner or later if it's too steep a price to pay for most people--I'm sure furries won't mind, as they tend to spend a lot more on their costumes.

Yeah, not saying that you should give the cameos away or anything, but generally speaking, the cheaper it is the more likely people will be willing to go in. For me personally $50 is a LOT of money to be seen in a cameo of a comic and I could spend that money on other things. If you want to make some extra cash, sell some other stuff as well. I see your store already sells buttons, hats etc. which is definitely a good thing. But how about prints of comics, original sketches and "store only" prints? Those will be worth at least $25-$30 with the original sketches probably being more.

The process of coming up with the scratch for printing a book is hard fucking work and it will take a LOT of time and effort to get people to throw money at you. In the meantime, have you considered other printing methods that might not be so taxing on the wallet such as Lulu? If I recall, you'd also be able to purchase an ISBN # for it and put it up on amazon.

Have you seen what Lulu charges for color lately?

Besides, I also work conventions, and so I need books that I can sell at conventions for at least double what it costs me to make them. I think I'd have a much harder time selling books at $80 (if I used Lulu) or $40 (if I used Ka-Blam or CreateSpace or whatever) than if I ask people to pay for a unique item like the cameos/commissions for $50 so I can sell the books for a reasonable price later.

Okay dude, jeez. You really don't need to get defensive on this. This is well-meaning and good spirited criticism. Not angry, blunt criticism where I am calling you names. No, I have not seen what lulu or other places charges for colours. But you have and that's pretty much what I was asking. Good on you for going the indie printing route. but I and a couple of others on this thread felt that you were charging too much and offered alternatives in ways in which you can make lesser amounts of money with some regular consistency instead of a few big purchases. You disagree. Fine. I wish you the absolute best of luck in reaching your financial goal and I'm sure your book will be a big hit at conventions. Take care.
