The Twitter account of industry magazine PRODUCTION WEEKLY just posted on teh twittarz:

The CW will again try to adapt Warren Ellis’ comic book "Global Frequency," this time Scott Nimerfro will script the pilot.

Which I discovered because half a dozen people retweeted it at me within about thirty seconds of it landing.

I haven’t been cleared to comment yet, so I can’t really add anything to this. I’ve spoken briefly to Scott Nimerfro -- by which I mean I threatened to have him stabbed, and he thanked me and told me a funny story about how he’s had worse threats -- and he is Okay.

Anyway. Yes. Shouldn’t say any more until I get the nod from the studio. But yes.

(Also, yes, I did tell John Rogers. But John, you know, has his own hit show LEVERAGE these days. One of his temple houris told me that John, from the depths of the bed made of golden vaginas that they wheel him around in, wishes me luck.)

I would love to think that the showrunners will have the sense to bring back Michelle Forbes... but I suspect there will be a severing of any ties to version 1.0. We shall see.

Great goddamn news. I really dug the comic...

Heh, they really should've just gone on with it the first time around, 'cause that original Pilot was quite good.

Now they're just going to spend a whole bunch of money getting a new bunch of people to shoot another pilot? Oh Hollywood, you are so silly. It'll be especially ridiculous if the new pilot is based on the same issue as the original pilot (Issue #1 if I remember correctly. GF was actually taunting me from the bookshelf the other day, so I'll have to re-read them).

oh, this is interesting. Hope it gets the go ahead this time around. Enjoyed the first pilot well enough though.

So a little research shows that Scott Nimmerfro was a writer (of two episodes, to be exact) and producer on Pushing Daisies, which I absolutely adored. Of course, that show was sweet and cute and quirky, which might not be the first qualities you'd attribute to Global Frequency... Still, it was well-written, and so I consider that background a Good Thing.

Assuming this gets picked up, who can I send my resume to to be the writers' assistant? (I realize that no one will have the answer to this question. But I do call DIBS!!!!!)

    Excellent news!

Now you can look forward to people saying things like "Oh this is good, but nowhere near as great as the original".

Oo-ooo oooo.. I likes this very much. Global Frequency was what brought me back to US comics (and by extension turned me into the Warren Ellis fan-boi I am today...)

I'm deffo hoping this makes the light of day - though I doubt it'd be anyway near as great as the original.....(@helloMuller, I just couldn't resist...)

Loved the comic and am very glad to hear of the possibility of more good, interesting television. I've never seen the original pilot despite trying to track it down. Is there somewhere I can check it out?

I'll second the Michelle Forbes Needs To Be Miranda Zero sentiment.

I remember reading something by Rogers where he commented that one reason his version didn't get picked up was because it was "too much of a downer ending". Not that you can't have downer endings for TV, especially nowadays, but when your *pilot* goes that route, it might not be as easy a sell.

Which makes you wonder -- if they want to avoid this, this kinda requires a different story as your pilot. What other issue would make a good First Story?

Exactly my guess after watching it. First thing I had to think about was "No wonder they didn't pick it up, because of the
kill sombody who's kind of dead already or you will have an even bigger catastrophy
thing." Probably not the best mood to start a new series in order to attract an audience ...

Whenever I see her in other stuff (BSG, In Treatment) I always exclaim 'Yes! It's Miranda Zero!' She owns that role.

Given that this is the same company that produced the original, anyone have an idea of what will be staying the same?

And Brian Molko from Placebo needs to be Miranda Zero. No joke.

I also wish you luck, from a much less privileged position. I can say that if it makes it to DVD I'll likely buy it.

To be honest, I hope that it's better than the first pilot. It wasn't crap or anything, I just felt it lacked the strong bond between characters that was present in the comics. At any rate I hope this gets green lit. An advantage would be that perhaps for part of the time since the first pilot they have been able to take a look at it and figure out some of the problems that may have lead to it not getting approved for a season. It's a nice place to be in.

As for the downer ending...I can imagine why people wouldn't like it, but on the other hand, world rescue situations don't always end with people in jail and the rescuers on a mountain with enough vermouth to tank ten elephants. People die. Some are innocent, some are merely victims and just ended up being a part of something bad and not really knowing. But in the end the world/city/town is saved. At least until the next time it's in danger. And in all honesty I think that makes the story stronger. Ah well.

    oldhat:

Oh, I agree with you, not every story can have a happy ending.

But it would seem that in television land, having the pilot (which forms the audience's first impressions, usually) be an unhappy ending sets the tone that the entire *show* is going to be like that. And for a first impression for a show trying to find a wide audience, that can be harmful. Or so I've been given to understand. The conventional wisdom would seem to be to start on an up note, or at least a *partially* up note, and then hit 'em with the OH SHIT after you've built up expectations for a couple episodes or so, that way the OH SHIT is even more potent for being a bit of a surprise.
