Inspired by an article in NME (blurgh) the staff at my work are compiling our top 10 albums of the decade, and i thought it'd be fun to do here.
We're doing it one for each year, with no particular winner overall, but feel free to do just a straight top 10 or whatever.

    anyhoo here's my list

    2000 - Slipknot - Slipknot
    2001 - Devin Townsend - Terria
    2002 - Peter Gabriel - UP
2003 - The Mars Volta - Deloused in the comatorium
    2004 - Clutch - Blast Tyrant
    2005 - SYL - Alien
2006 - Red Sparowes - Every red heart shines towards a red sun
    2007 - Tony Levin - Stick Man
    2008 - Beehoover - Heavy Zoooo
    2009 - Mastodon - Crack the skye

    have fun

Okay subject to revision if someone names an album I forgot. This is also meant to reflect primarily what I was listening to at the time. There may be albums I like more now from the year, but at the time I was rocking:

2000- Botch- We are the Romans
    2001- Converge - Jane Doe
2002- The Hope Conspiracy - End Note
    2003- Aesop Rock- Bazooka Tooth
    2004- Isis -Panopticon
2005- curlupanddie- The One Above All, the End of All That Is
2006- Astronautalis - The Mighty Ocean and Nine Dark Theaters
    2007- The Locust- New Erections
    2008- Why?- Alopecia
2009- Themselves- The Free Houdini EP

(Edit 2009 is hard, I'm not far enough a way yet to know, the free houndi ep gets a lot of play time but Narrows and Between the Buried and Me also released killer albums this year.)
  1.  (7256.3)
2000: O Brother, Where Art Thou? - Soundtrack
2001: The Faint - Danse Macabre
    2002: Agnostic Front/Discipline - Working Class Heroes
2003: Jaga Jazzist - The Stix
2004: Kill Cheerleader - All Hail
2005: Sleeping People - Sleeping People
    2006: Black Keys- Magic Potion
    2007: Chromeo - Fancy Footwork
2008: Crystal Castles - Crystal Castles
2009: Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears - Tell 'Em What Your Name Is!

Let it be known that the Bad Brains Live at CBGBs 1982 would have won 2006, but it was unfair since it was actually recorded 24 years prior to that.

My choices are pretty limited, as I don't actually have that much music, believe it or not. So, best albums I own from these years:

    2000: Radiohead - Kid A
    2001: Tool - Lateralus
2002: Bright Eyes - Lifted, or: The Story is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground
    2003: A Perfect Circle - Thirteenth Step
    2004: Mastodon - Leviathan
2005: Nine Inch Nails - With Teeth
2006: Muse - Black Holes and Revelations
    2007: Type O Negative - Dead Again
2008: Amanda Palmer - Who Killed Amanda Palmer?
2009: Mastodon - Crack the Skye

2004-2008 were all pretty tight choices. AFP had to go up against Nick Cave, Beck, two NIN albums, and the new Metallica in 2008.

I might have to turn this into an 8tracks mix at some point. Though it would probably sound like most of my others...

@rickiep00h - 2003 Nick Cave? Nocturama? That's hardly his best album this decade.

Going by the albums I own only:
    2000 - The Avalanches - Since I left you
2001 - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - No more shall we part
2002 - (three way split between:)
Sigur Rós - ( ), Woven Hand - Woven Hand & Porcupine Tree - In Absentia
2003 - (two way split between:)
Explosions in the Sky - The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place & Boris - Akuma no Uta
2004 - (three way split between:)
Iron and Wine - Our Endless Numbered Days, 65daysofstatic - The Fall of Math & Pantheon I - Pantheon I
2005 - Gojira - From Mars to Sirius
2006 - (four way split between:)
Jazkammer - Metal Music Machine, Triosk - The Headlight Serenade, Tool - 10,000 Days & Anoice - Remmings
2007 - (three way tie between:)
The Shining - Grindstone, Battles - Mirrored & Th' Legendary Shack Shakers - Swampblood
2008 - (three way tie between:)
Farmers Market - Surfin' USSR, Flipron - Gravity Calling & Cynic - Traced in Air
    2009 - Immortal - All Shall Fail

I could mention a ton more, but I'll leave it at this. I've tried to limit myself to one album per artist atleast. (Also, the hands down greatest thing to be released in 2008 was Magma - Studio Zünd, but seeing how that is a compilation, I left it out).

2001 was probably my most difficult, but 04 and 06 were tough too.
@ZOMBI my shortlist ended up 36 albums long

@Alastair: A nice, small pub in the Netherlands, big glass of beer in my hand, Beehoover playing the Wake-Up Call for that day of the Roadburn Festival there (Roadburn's main location beeing few meters away from that pub) was one of the greatest moments I had in spring. Sorry to tell you. ;)

    2000 - Quasimoto / The Unseen
    2001 - Squarepusher / Go Plastic
2002 - DJ Shadow / The Private Press
2003 - Dizzee Rascall / Boy In Da Corner
    2004 - !!! / Louden Up Now
    2005 - Gorillaz / Demon Days
    2006 - Spank Rock / Yoyoyoyoyo
    2007 - Battles / Mirrorred
    2008 - Burial / Untrue
    2009 - Antipop Consortium / Fluorescent Black

Sure I'm missing something there, but it's a fair selection. 2006 was a hard one... Spank Rock, Burial's first, Distance's album... it was a good year, the high point of the decade for me musically.
  2.  (7256.12)
2000 - The World/Inferno Friendship Society - East Coast Supersound Punk of Today
    2001 - Propagandhi - Today's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes
2002 - Against Me! - Reinventing Axl Rose
2003 - The Copyrights - We Didn't Come Here to Die
2004 - Ted Leo and the Pharmacists - Shake the Sheets
2005 - The Hold Steady - Separation Sunday
2006 - The Hold Steady - Boys and Girls in America
2007 - Jason Webley - The Cost of Living
    2008 - Slim Cessna's Auto Club - Cipher
2009 - Bomb the Music Industry! - Scrambles

This was tough, missing some of my favourites, Stray Dog Town, Historical Fiction, American IV, Hospitals, The Sunset Tree. It was a good decade, but then again, it always is.

Nice one Alastair, I was going to post the very same thread after reading that god-fucking-awful list. 'Is This It' by the Strokes at #1 is just a testament to their dwindling readership (40,000-or-so and declining quickly).

Some of the albums I would've chosen are already in other people's lists, but I'll see if I can find anything different.

    2000 - Deftones - White Pony
    2001 - Tool - Lateralus
2002 - Boards of Canada - Geogaddi, Sigur Ros - ( ), Queens of the Stone Age - Songs for the Deaf, Godspeed you! Black Emperor - Yanqui UXO or Cinematic Orchestra - Every Day
2003 - Mogwai - Happy Songs for Happy People, Kinski - Airs Above Your Station, Kayo Dot - Choirs of the Eye, Massive Attack - 100th Window, Deftones - Deftones or The Mars Volta - Deloused... (personally my favourite year of the '00s as you can tell)
2004 - Zero 7 - When it Falls or Air - Talkie Walkie
2005 - Sigur Ros - Takk or Four Tet - Everything Ecstatic
2006 - Kayo Dot - Dowsing Anemone with Copper Tongue
2007 - Jesu - Conqueror, Battles - Mirrored or Radiohead - In Rainbows
    2008 - Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes
    2009 - Fuck Buttons - Tarot Sport

You bastards made me go upstairs and rifle through my CDs to finish this. Well played.

2000 - Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven.
2001 - Aesop Rock - Labor Days or Lightning Bolt - Ride The Skies.
2002 - The Mountain Goats - Tallahassee or Mclusky - Mclusky Do Dallas.
2003 - The Bronx - The Bronx (I) or The Murder of Rosa Luxemburg - Everyone's In Love And Flowers Pick Themselves.
    2004 - Death From Above 1979 - You're A Woman, I'm A Machine.
2005 - Million Dead - Harmony No Harmony or Silver Mt Zion - Horses In the Sky (though really there about 10 others from this year I could pick, these are just the ones I've played the most in the past year or so).
2006 - These Arms Are Snakes - Easter.
    2007 - Battles - Mirrored.
2008 - Fuck Buttons - Street Horrrsing or Fucked Up - The Chemistry of Common Life.
2009 - The Decemberists - The Hazards of Love, Future of the Left - Travels With Myself and Another or The Flaming Lips - Embryonic.

This was really fucking difficult, but it's nice to look through people's lists and see so many records that I like.

@Zombi - I said "AFP" as in "Amanda Fucking Palmer", not "APC". 2008 was the year of Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!, which was a pretty good Nick Cave album.

    Sorry for the confusion.

Man if I knew that two-way, three-way and four-way splits were cool in the top ten albums of the decade I would have been here all night.
  5.  (7256.19)
@Ethan, you have a point. Here are my splits narrowed down to my favourites:

    2002 - Sigur Ros - ( ), 2003 - Mars Volta - Deloused... 2004 - Zero 7 - When it Falls, 2005 - Four Tet - Everything Ecstatic, 2007 - Jesu - Conqueror.

It physically hurt me to cut those down.

EDITED FOR NOTABLE MENTION: Lightning Bolt - Ride the Skies (original release year, 2001, rerelease 2003).
