Inspired by an article in NME (blurgh) the staff at my work are compiling our top 10 albums of the decade, and i thought it'd be fun to do here.
We're doing it one for each year, with no particular winner overall, but feel free to do just a straight top 10 or whatever.

Okay subject to revision if someone names an album I forgot. This is also meant to reflect primarily what I was listening to at the time. There may be albums I like more now from the year, but at the time I was rocking:

(Edit 2009 is hard, I'm not far enough a way yet to know, the free houndi ep gets a lot of play time but Narrows and Between the Buried and Me also released killer albums this year.)

My choices are pretty limited, as I don't actually have that much music, believe it or not. So, best albums I own from these years:

2003: A Perfect Circle - Thirteenth Step
2004: Mastodon - Leviathan
2005: Nine Inch Nails - With Teeth
2006: Muse - Black Holes and Revelations
2007: Type O Negative - Dead Again
2008: Amanda Palmer - Who Killed Amanda Palmer?
2009: Mastodon - Crack the Skye

2004-2008 were all pretty tight choices. AFP had to go up against Nick Cave, Beck, two NIN albums, and the new Metallica in 2008.

I might have to turn this into an 8tracks mix at some point. Though it would probably sound like most of my others...

@Alastair: A nice, small pub in the Netherlands, big glass of beer in my hand, Beehoover playing the Wake-Up Call for that day of the Roadburn Festival there (Roadburn's main location beeing few meters away from that pub) was one of the greatest moments I had in spring. Sorry to tell you. ;)

HATRED SURGE-black box 7"- the best powerviolence record since SPAZZ put out crushkilldestroy
DEAR LANDLORD-dream homes lp-perfect pop punk albums dont come around all the time
CONVERGE-jane doe 2xlp- nuff said, true believers!
ORCHID-chaos is me 12" ep- insanity.
THE ASSISTANT-s/t lp- i dont think ive ever heard a band that is as varied as this, and this is their opus

@Ethan: Hm, okay. This as been a point of discussion at a german music board, too, haha. Some sources say end of 1999, so I don't really know, honestly. Maybe this comes beacause the promo cds went out the year before, because I know quite some music journalists. Awesome album though. Love it, when in the end, everything goes finally even more wild, with "I Wanna Be a Sex Symbol on My Own Terms" having quite some Rock'n'Roll vibe, "Man the Ramparts" coming epic and then that noisy drum'n'bass kind of thing ...

Yeah, one of the few albums that has caused me to stop and re-think everything I thought about music up to that point. I had already been a Botch fan, but that album changed the course of the next few years of my life. Like reading Neuromancer and Burning Chrome, which influenced me- even down to the way I dressed- this album effected my development as a person. I can only think of a few albums that have done that.

As for release dates, if I ever get crossed up, I use allmusic.com. Their reviewers seem to have their heads on backwards, but as far as an informational resource, it's without peer.

The cold vein was very nearly my pick for 2001. The production on that album alone is mind boggling, not to mention the actual lyrics and performances from Vast Aire and Vordul Mega.

2006 was also a tough year, and that Subtle album was a top contender, ultimately though- Astronautalis gets more play time from me.

2000 - PJ Harvey - Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea

this album was a theme for a time in my first year of living on my own. i used to blare it and take flamingbacardi 151 shots with girls in my building when i was first learning to talk to people. i love PJ, and she is still one of the artistsi am most upset about not seeing live in all my years of shows!

since Warren mentioned doing it for only this year, i've gone through my collection to see what i could come up with... [i've only bought 3 cds and 7 LPs that were released this year, and certainly not all of them are in the running for the top of the year, if you ask me]

1. The Flaming Lips - Embyonic [haven't bought the vinyl yet, cause it's ain't out. those bastards!]
2. Beirut - March of The Zapotec [not the second realpeople EP included, though... it bores me]
3. Andrew Bird - Noble Beast
4. Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest
5. The King Khan & BBQ Show - Invisible Girl

7. Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - Beware [not his best certainly. some good tracks, but somehow not enough - he was awesome live, though]

And last month I just picked up all of his instrumental albums, including Oxtrumentals because the man's beats always sound like they're ten years on from whenever you're listening to them.

If I had to pick a Dresden Dolls album, I'd probably have to go with Yes, Virginia. I still have yet to see Amanda Palmer perform, regretfully. I live near enough to Boston, so I have no excuse. I did get to see Brian Vigilone twice, with World/Inferno, and he is absolutely STUNNING. One of the finest live performers I've ever seen, and obviously loves what he's doing. Check him out, if you haven't had the chance.

I'm of the opinion that ranking music is a bit of a waste of time. Combine that with the fact that I can't remember anything from 2006 back to my birth. Makes a task like this virtually impossible for me. Also, there'd be at least one hundred albums -- probably more -- I absolutely love in that time frame. Last year alone I compiled a group of favorite, un-ranked, albums from the past year and there was around 50 of them. So really I'm on pace for around 500 if I did this.

Hrm. This is pretty much impossible. Here are some great record this decade, from each year that I haven't seen repeated here.

the Explosion//Flash Flash Flash (2000)
Brash punk rock done by a lyricist and band who knows exactly where the bodies and buried and where the screws ought to be turned.

Bane//Give Blood (2001)
The best hardcore punk record released this decade. The only disc that comes close is the Los Crudos discography.

Hot Water Music//Caution (2002)
Some people say this record is about drugs. I say this record is about the entire healing process and drugs.

Clann Zu//Rua (2003)
Nine Inch Nails meets a particularly rabid Flogging Molly.

Planes Mistaken For Stars//Up In Them Guts (2004)
Dirty, beautiful and profoundly messed up. Up In Them Guts takes me places, man. It's music for kissing girls and breaking the mirrors in your room.

Paint it Black//Paradise (2005)
This CD is at your throat from the opening moment and doesn't let go until the last ragged gasps of "here's to the unhappy endings and false starts". Political hardcore the way it ought to be and hardly ever is.

Crime In Stereo//the Troubled Stateside (2006)
The band was young enough to still be incredibly pointed politically, and had written enough that they could reinvent themselves. They didn't reinvent the wheel, they just wrote a fantastic Long Island hardcore record, in the process becoming the bands they wanted to be when they were young.

A Wilhelm Scream//Career Suicide (2007)
The Phi Beta Kappa of skate-punk bands turns in their senior thesis.

the Out_Circuit//Pierce the Empire With A Sound (2008)
Pierce the Empire With A Sound is a peculiar alchemy of Botch and Boards of Canada as overseen by Nathan Burke (ex-Frodus) and produced by Teppei from Thrice. It's hypnotic, aggressive, paranoid and very Christian. In this case, Christian is not a euphemism for being narrowminded.

P.O.S.//Never Better (2009)
Aggressive, confrontational and dense hip-hop. Shit yes.

My listening patterns are all over the place and I have been more into older music the last decade or so, so I can't really make a real expansive list. When the decade started, I was still listening to a bunch of the electronic music and post rock that had kind of been an obsession for a few years. Some of these groups were still working it into the early part of the decade like Godspeed You Black Emperor, Autechre, Boards of Canada, Tortoise, Explosions in the Sky etc. Same time I was also still of obsessive on old 70s music like Klaus Schutze, Tangerine Dream, Neu!, Harmonia etc. At some point, I got kind of sick of electronic music, any of it and got back into guitars.

I found a handful of metal bands some of which were bringing in some progressive rock or ambient music into their sound like: Isis, Neurosis, Opeth, Botch, High On Fire, and Mastodon. I also listened to loads and loads of Motorhead, probably knocking a few Dbs off of my ears.

Same time I got really into listening to a bunch of full on mullet guitar rock, especially some old blues based rock from the late 60s and 70s, some of which I hadn’t really heard like Robin Trower, Free, the Groundhogs, Thin Lizzy, UFO, Buddy Miles etc. I was also listening to a lot of Chess or classic Chicago electric blues stuff like Magic Sam, Howlin Wolf and Hound Dog Taylor.

I’ve recently kind of gotten back to old punk/post punk/early synth music I already had, then some new wave and have been checking out some bands I never really heard in the past year or so like early Caberet Voltaire, Liquid Liquid and the first couple of Human League records. I’ve also been listening to the Swans and Gary Numan quite a bit again. I have gotten quite a bit of music, including some new stuff, but I have been more into older music. There are new things I like, but not as many other than stuff like Isis or Neurosis I would get obsessive about. I’ve got a heck of a lot of music, so there is always something I haven’t heard in a while.

Hmm. My problem with this is that the best records get rediscovered years later - your choices are inherently stilted by how / when you discovered them. I reckon I'll only realise one of the best records to come out of the last decade in a few years.... Plus, I was 13 when the millennium hit,. and wasted a lot of time on decidedly crap music.
However... albums that had profound impact -

Mastodon - Leviathan - First CD I brought when I moved away from home, and it blew my mind.
Tool - Lateralus - Listened to instead of sleeping as a teenager... the hypnotic style is incredible.
The Streets - Original Pirate Material - I think it deserves to be included for making such a dent on the pop music charts and introducing people to an entirely new style of hip-hop
Burial - Untrue - Nuff Said.
Monolake - Polygon Cities - I have to include Monolake somewhere, his music is simply phenomenal, mind-bending and introduced me to so much. I'd include the HongKong remaster from last year, but that was an album from the nineties, and whilst it's fucking amazing, the remaster wasn't as good.
Braintax - Panorama - "one for the treble, two for the floor, I'm Yorkshire to the bone, I don't copy New York." Skinnyman has nothing on Brain's lyrical dexterity and widescreen view.
The Bug - London Zoo. A stark, industrio-noise take on grime. Brutal and dark.
Claro Intelecto - Neurofibro. Awesome minimal/ techno / electro. Brooding and emotional
