A few days ago, the citizens of Whitechapel did a nice thing. As they did this nice thing, Ariana suggested that maybe the folks who helped out should get a little reward. I agreed.
So, Whitechapel folk, I made you something. It's not a big something, just a collection of photographs, but they were all taken just for here, so they're special and they're for you. I've bundled them into a nice little .pdf thingy, which you can download here. I hope you like them.
Sean will be posting his own little gift here shortly. It's a lovely piece of art made, again, just for you.
Thanks all! We all did it in community spirit unsuspecting reward but this is a great thing to wake up to on a Saturday [yep - Lazy Ben woke up at 11 this weekend and has only just managed to get dressed at 3.]
@KPatrick - I love the fact that your town has a boat on the welcome sign. Please say it moves back and forth all day. :) @Sean - Would it be cool if I printed that and put it on my wall? I completely understand if you say no but it's going in my favourite pictures, at least.
@ap Minos - First, thanks for asking-- most people don't think about doing that. Second, absolutely. Have at it. I have no problems with people printing anything I post on Whitechapel (or anywhere else I post online) for that sort of personal usage. Glad you like it.
So, when KPatrickGlover said he would make something here, I asked if I could help with anything, and he told me what he was doing and suggested that if I had anything to contribute, get it to him by Friday and he'd add it. And I didn't, because I suddenly couldn't think of anything, and because I suck. But seeing what he came up with got me going again, and produced the following, overlong, ranty and somewhat sappy post. I hope it's... I don't know, something. And Rachael, in case it gets lost in the general fawning that follows, I hope you take those problems, and kick their fucking ass. Hard. Pwn them. And in the meantime, may the shiny new Mac brighten your day just a bit.
Right. *Ahem*
This Is Whitechapel.
That’s a not uncommon phrase here.
This is not the Internet, This Is Whitechapel.
Often, the meaning this carries is: You don’t get to be an asshole in here. If you’re looking for a place to start fights, if you can’t express your opinions - or react to those of others you might disagree with – in a calm, respectful manner, this is not the place for you. The arse eels will get you. And you can damn sure take your Wolverine vs. Batman fanboy flame wars elsewhere.
Sometimes, though, it means a little more.
When this idea of gathering some funds for a new laptop for Rachael moved into a separate thread, Warren said that he was happy to let this run its course for a few days, but that it wouldn’t be setting a precedent in Whitechapel. And that’s fair, and justified. No one is interested in turning this forum into a beggar’s row, where people come in saying they’re a little short this month, or there’s this really nice new phone, could we maybe pitch in? But I’d argue that in some sense, there already was a precedent. One set by the general atmosphere in here, by the Saturday Night Open Mic’s, the Self Portrait threads. All these things that solidify the notion that all those names on your screen are Real People. I can’t think of another place on the Net where people would come in and confess their innermost feelings, frustrations and hopes every Saturday, without fear of inane mocking of 13-year olds (or their grown-up, mental equivalents). Where they might find comfort from the comments of others, or just from releasing the pressure a bit. Or a place where someone would feel comfortable enough to show fairly intimate photos of themselves (yes, the naked SPIT eventually went to a whacky place, but that doesn’t negate it). And there are plenty other examples I could pull out. And all this contributes to the feeling that Whitechapel isn’t just an internet forum. It is, as Kevin (may I call you Kevin?) so aptly put it, a community. We’re happy when we read of people here experiencing good things, and we care when they’re hurt, or sick, or just in a bad place.
So when the crap just seemed to pour in continuously in Rachael’s life, and on top of everything she had to work from a clunky laptop that was more than a little incompatible with her ailments, it’s perhaps not really all that shocking (but still very cool) that someone like Alastair would say “Hey, if all of us here threw in even just a little, Rachael could get a shiny new laptop.” And then people actually grab on to that idea, and put action behind it, instead of just nodding their heads and thinking ‘yeah, that’d be nice’. And, while a new laptop is a smaller thing in the greater scheme, hopefully it’ll make some things easier. And it certainly seems to have given her mood a boost, which is a great thing in and of itself. And we got this done, people in this place on the Internet. And I think that’s pretty damn exceptional.
A fairly quick perusal of this forum will reveal that you’re all a pretty smart, funny bunch. But more importantly, you are all amazing people. And, at the risk of moving completely into Hallmark Movie of the Week territory, that is what Whitechapel is. And credit for that goes to Warren and Ariana, for setting this venue up and making it as diverse as it is, putting in the time and patience to be kind and helpful, being unafraid to kick some ass when ass-kicking is due, and being just a bit crazy and unpredictable (in the best possible way, ohgodpleasedon’thurtme) from time to time. For just generally being awesome.
But it’s you people, you wonderful, beautiful fucking people, that make this place. Most of us came here because we’re fans of Warren’s writing. But I think we stay for the company. We stay because, well, This Isn’t The Internet. This Is Whitechapel. And Whitechapel is a pretty awesome place to be.
I still think that "This Is Where I Live" would make an awesome community blog where people send in a picture or several along with a blurb about where they live. Maybe a story that happened there or something.
I'm not going to hug or cry, but I'll share something from the concert last night:
Brother Ali was born in Madison, WI, grew up in parts of Michigan, before coming to Minnesota in his early teens. He's an albino, and suffered ridicule at school aplenty.
He never graduated high-school, and yet he's one of the most dynamic, hardest working, soulful MCs in hip-hop today, period.
After coming to Minnesota, he eventually got in with Rhymesayers, home of Atmosphere, Eyedea and Abilities, P.O.S. and others. Last night, at the concert (51 shows in 60 days, he got the flu and didn't cancel), he said:
"Don't leave here saying you're a Rhymesayers fan. You are a part of us--if you're in this room, if you buy these albums, if you're wearing the shirts we make, then you're one of us. You are Rhymesayers."
We're all Whitechapel. It may be a physical location in England, but we populate this ether-city, and we watch out for our own. I hope that, in the end, Ariana and Warren found themselves with a smile upon their face, if only for a moment, 'cause we "got it."
Now let's discuss the project itself! create a bigger POD book? free pdf? I really think this should be made in to something bigger that involves people.
Robin, I'm up for something bigger as a contributor, but my plates a little full at the moment to be any sort of organizer. So, if it get's going, I'm in, if it doesn't, talk to me about in January and I may help start it up.
As I said earlier, I would love to see a blog of this. Every two days a couple of pictures by someone gets put up followed by a story/description of where they live. Alas, I won't be able to manage such a thing as Notebookery, my jobs and finding more jobs is taking up too much time.
I have no life but probably lack the organizizering skills required. Regardless, I'll probably go out and take a bunch of photos of my town at some point anyway.
a POD book would just be AWESOME. If it's something people want to do I'd offer whatever I could setting things up and helping with all of it. :>
@oldhat - I wouldn't be able to do it all but if anyone else is interested in moderating/organising a blog, I'd def. be up for it. Also happy to offer space/wordpress wrangling too.
