23andMe is a service that gives you a tube to spit into. Link
You post them that spit filled tube and they give you a breakdown of your genome - what diseases you might develop, what you might pass onto your kids - they can even tell you if you might get hooked on heroin if you were to give it a try.
I'm thinking of doing it because I'm plain curious (everyone would love to take a peek at their future right?) - but also my health's a bit up and down and it'd be handy to know what I might be able to stave off.
Has anyone here done it? Was it worth your money? ($429)
Anyone aware of it's credibility being torn to pieces? Anyone scared of what happens when employers and insurance agents make this a mandatory requirement?
I remember coming across a similar company not long ago where, again, you give them a cheek swab, and they make an artpiece of your genome. Small, or wall-sized, depending on your tastes. They're even kind enough to throw in some genetic diagnosis while you're at it.
I had my mtDNA and Y-DNA tested with GeneTree. Thanks to the relatively greater affordability of full genome sequencing (FGS), I recently decided to have my FGS mtDNA tested with FamilyTree DNA. It will be a few months 'til I receive the results. Ah! Hate the wait.
If they make further strides in their capabilities regarding the number, significance, and accuracy of disease predicting based upon the FGS, I would likely entertain the idea.
