I recently got a Lumix GF1, which is not only a sweet little camera, right between a point-n-shoot and a DSLR, but can use almost any pre-digital lens, with the appropriate adapter ring. This was shot with a Leica 35mm/f2 Summicron M lens. A much cheaper way to go than spending 8 grand on a Leica M9...

I wouldn't call a 35mm Summicron cheap... It's more than 3 times the price of the GF1 :). I'd love to get one (GF1) for when I don't want to bring the DSLR with me, but I suspect I'll keep using my Canon and my trusty old 55mm 1.4 Voigtlander for a while (picture below).

When you're used to fast prime lenses, it's almost impossible to go back to compact cameras. I love my LX2 but I can't use it anymore unless it's in broad daylight now. The GF1 with the 20mm 1.7 seems to be a great alternative to heavier setups. They should just add another pancake (between 40 and 50mm would be perfect for me) and I'll start saving money.

@Rachael Some friends gave me a small box of teeth for my birthday one year. They were apparently from the kit of a former dentist that showed up in a resale shop. I still get a bit creeped out when I set them up to shoot, I tend to refer to them as "artifacts of pain"

oscillateur: What I meant was that the GF1 is a cheap digital body for my already-bought-and-paid-for Leica M lenses. (Elmarit-M 1:2.8/28mm, Elmarit-M 1:2.8/135mm, 35mm/f2 Summicron 1:2/35mm third version, Summicron1:2/50mm first version collapsible)

I LOVE my M6, and I am really, really lusting after an M9, but it's hard to justify plunking down 7 grand+ in these uncertain times.

Agreed that fast primes are the way to go. The Lumix 20mm/f1.7 is just lovely, and I should be able to use my Leica D Four Thirds 25mm/f2 with the GF1, once the adapter arrives in the mail. Leica will be making a 40mm prime lens for the micro four thirds system, BTW...

speaking of camera porn, here's my forensic Polaroid camera:

You might remember it from the autopsy scene in Silence Of The Lambs. It's a 4"x5" polaroid back, mounted to a long housing with a pistol grip and a lens with a small but powerful ring flash. (That's what the power pack is for.) it has an extremely shallow DOF, centered at a point at the end of the metal plates on either side. It was made for taking life-size photos of gunshot wounds, teeth marks, etc. However, taken out of that context, you can make some cool art with it.

I moved into a big work studio a few years ago, and the increase in square footage only made things worse! It does make for a nice selection of props for photos shoots though...

Did a short conceptual shoot today. Effects are all non-digital, messing around with compounding lens filters. Only digital tweaking was resizing the images. Two harvests so far:

Need to start shooting more. I'm all digital now, but I spent years doing darkroom work. I miss having a darkroom intensely. The process, from start to finish, is intoxicating. Arranging the negative in the enlarger and setting up the exposure. Determining how long to expose, where to burn, where to dodge, arranging your hands as if you're involved in some kind of secret handshake in the dark. Handling photosensitive paper like protected arcane writings that should only be taken out at the right point in the ritual. The harried few seconds of exposure; no turning back. You're committed. Watching the image slowly form in the tray with developer. The smells of the fumes.

I miss it so much. But digital, of course, has its advantages as well.

There were small spot lights up at the top that kind of blend into the light themselves due to their small size and the brightness of the light.
Possibly.
Umm....
It's a really unusual space in there.
The lower level church has a more traditional look in keeping with the external of the building, but the upper part of the cathedral is this really stark cavernous space.
Really clean hard lines unlike the ornate curves seen elsewhere in the very same building. A real sense of vast and empty.

@ William George: Yeah I should totally whip up a Script-Fu filter to do that automatically but I just add a cpl layers, fill and scale. I'd love to snag a second hand medium format camera somewheres but I'm all digital right now -- that pinhole shot was created in camera by my point and shoot but I think the foggy/misty/rainy weather helped quite a bit. Your shot of the gate is nice, Asian built environments always have such great formal lines to work with.

I have a few questions about using models for those of you who use them

Who handles the make-up, hair, clothing, sets, etc? I'm assuming most of you are without the benefit of a support crew.

In my case, it is usually the models themselves who do hair and makeup, the clothing is 50/50 the models/myself, and props and locations are generally my home or studio. I have done more elaborate shoots with hair/makeup/clothing people, but I prefer to keep it simple, and also prefer models with a more natural look.

I've been wanting to get more people into my photography, but I feel bad stopping people in their daily activities, and I've always felt kind of uncomfortable doing the "sneaky shoot" of street photography.

YAY! It's back! I've been using my little Canon Elph because it's easy to pop into my bag and is great for catching randomness. I recently used it though @ a friends gig - and after futzing with the white balance.. got it to give me some awesomeness!

@angeldye, I think your camera might let you shoot in RAW format which, if you aren't already doing it, gives you a LOT more control over the individual variables in the photo when you import it into photoshop. JPGS are the devil, the devil, I tell you!

I went on a wee bit of an adventure on Wednesday afternoon. There are a couple of megalithic monuments in the area around me. The largest is an old Iron Age hill fort called Burrough Hill and it is a country park.

This is the path going from the car park to the hill fort itself. This is looking back towards the car park and this is a slab of ice. The weather was cold when I was there and it was raining.

Which I didn't take. I just ran up the side of this earthwork towards the trig point.

Where I looked right.

And then left.

That stone marker you can see in the distance marks the extreme left hand corner of the fort.

After running back down to the bottom of the earthwork I followed a path down the side of the hill fort for a short way.

And I think you'd agree with me that it'd be a hell of a job to attack the sides of the hill fort directly.

i am sure there are HDR tutorials but the best way I've been able to do it is to make sure to find the right exposure. If your camera has bracketing I like to first find the right exposure for a normal photo then set the bracketing to 2.0 stops +/-, then you can use photoshop or programs like photomatix to align the photos. I take 3 photos because that's all my camera's bracketing can do. Some HDR has 5 or even 7 different exposed shots....hope that helps. :0

Even though I'm Not A Photographer, I still quite enjoyed Trey Ratcliff's HDR tutorial, because it goes off on all sorts of related tangents past "now adjust your slider to this specific number." He also goes on past the usual "here's your perfectly serviceable HDR image" to discuss some cleanup, masking, etc finishing touches that I think some folks might keep as professional secrets, but really give you a good idea of how you can add a bit of subtle polish if that's your thing.

I like this one because the way the sun has overexposed the right side of the picture along with the way my dog's ears are up make me imagine I just caught a nuclear blast going off.

Question for all you folks who use SLR cameras from a gal who is learning how to use hers: without using a light meter, what is the best way to determine what f-stop and shutter speed to use? I can't seem to get the right settings in any circumstance. I kind of feel spoiled with a DSLR since I can immediately see how it looks, but with SLR that's obviously not the case.:P

@Oldhat: You can use sunny 16 rule, but I found that with time you can approximate the settings based on your own experiences. Also, film (specially BW) is very forgiving and has a rather robust dynamic range, so even if you dont get the spot on exposure, you can probably fix it in post.

The last time I used color reversal/ slide film was stupidly with a pinhole camera. Since slide film is a very harsh mistress that gives you no leeway on your exposures, it turned out poorly... If interestingly purple.

I didn't use it again because it's too expensive of a film to waste shots on. But I bought a roll of Fuji Provia last month and stuck it in my Pentax.

The rest of the roll is brilliantly colored (IMO) but the film still costs too damned much to buy and develop to be using on from-the-hip style shots like this. If I use it again, it'll be for special reasons.

Couldn't you, at least in the beginning and getting used to things, bring a DSLR with you when using your SLR? I mean, take a few shots and see which settings work, and then apply it to the SLR? Maybe after doing that for a while the repetition will sink in. A light meter would still be preferred, but maybe you could at least learn how to better estimate ballpark notion of things?

For everyone knowledgeable in matters of film and digital:

Film is expensive. So, if I were to use a film camera, but when bringing it to get developed I only requested the pictures on a CD (can they give you RAW format from film?), or some other digital medium - then decided those few images I wanted to properly print out, and used the digital files to print the image from... would the resulting image be of equal quality and tone as though first printed from the actual film, or would there be degradation in the image quality?

funny you should ask, i started shooting film again, and the two rolls i did i had scanned to CD. my gf still has the neg & cd with her in Montreal, so i can't say how much difference it is in quality until she brings them when she comes down in a few weeks.

it apparently used one of these: Noritsu Lab
and according to the company site, they're capable of doing RAW scans, so you might just need to request the scan for RAW, not the default jpeg. will possibly cost more, obviously, but just ask.

@Zoe: I dont know what it is about Japanese rock bands, but they are so much fun to shoot. A lot of japanese performers seem live for the theatrics and fan service.

@Rachel: If cost is an issue, I would shoot black and white film, and develop it yourself. For about 30 dollars you can get all the gear and reagents you would need to process a metric crapload of rolls. And the process itself is very simple. Black and white film is also rather cheap, and you can get rebranded Tri-X 400 for about $2 a roll. As for the scan quality, it would depend on the people and equipment used to do the job, but I am not sure if the resulting files will match your negative, as different hardware and software interprets data differently, and some tweaking might have to be done in post to match the tones exactly. And then there is also the old school of thought that you should always print from negatives to preserve that fresh film feeling...

I don't miss messing around with a darkroom much to be honest - (or the pseudo-darkroom I had in my bedroom) the ruined carpets, the chemical induced headaches, the wasted paper, the incessant problems with dust or watermarks on the negatives, the test strips. Don't think it's that much easier or cheaper getting good prints digitally, but at least it's dry and doesn't smell... do admit that real prints are lovely though.

You can't get real RAW format from film.
RAW includes camera data that gives the programme your'e using a benchmark to work from for any post-processing.
Best you get with film is RAW format but with no data to work from with regard to exposure etc. Still, at 16 bit, its a lot more malleable than JPEG
Other issue is that CD will only hold roughly 14 RAW images, at 8 Million Pixels ( 6x4 print size) the files are around 56 Megs each.

The idea of a traditional 365, one photo per day, self portrait or otherwise, stresses me out unbelievably. So, since I'm still pretty green as a photog, I'm challenging myself to process new and old photos in a particular style [1 photo per day, 1 style per month] to help strengthen my post processing skills and workflow. January's theme is black and white. There's a whole explanation as to why in the tumblr where they originally post. They're crossposted to flickr here.

Already I'm seeing more varied shots with my eye, and really getting a lot more out of some shots I originally rejected.

@allana - Amazing as always. I LOVE LOVE LOVE that masked lady, what is the story behind that one?

@thewaltonsare - very nice. I suck at macro, even with the right equipment, I just fail fail fail. No idea why. I think the pencil sharpener is my favorite. Something to do with the anxiety I felt every time I had to draw attention to myself by walking over to the pencil sharpener, and just reminiscent enough of revolver cartridge to remind me that it made me want to shoot myself in the face. That sounds really horrible, hah, but I mean it in the very best way.

Last week my friend Lory asked to shoot some portraits of me, to which i agreed on the condition that I get to shoot her as well.

Later, my girlfriend came home from work, and wanted to pose for Lory as well. As this was occurring, our neighbor, also a photographer, dropped by with several bottles of excellent tequila for a taste test, and Topless Tequila Tuesday was born!

Seattle has a new (well, going on four years now) holiday tradition in a burlesque staging of the Nutcracker called The Land of the Sweets. I've been something like the staff photographer since it got started and I was there again this year, having an absolute blast... even when my primary lens apparently died.

In all honesty, I like not having to worry about anything aside from getting the composition right, which is why this camera is moving into my Most Used Camera position. But being what it is, it's too limited to be used in low light and closeups are impossible so it'll never really take over...

William: Are you using the 17mm pancake lens with your Pen? I LOVE my Lumix GF1 w/20mm/f2 lens. With the clip-on LCD viewfinder, it's an excellent compromise between a DSLR and a point-n-shoot. Micro 4/3rds is the way to go these days...

@Coop: Heh. The Olympus Pen EE-2 is a half frame film camera with a fixed f/3.5, 28mm lens. It's flat enough that I can literally stick it in my back pocket. It's brilliant.

Though I have been entertaining the idea of buying the EP-1 or EP-2 with the pancake lens and viewfinder. But it's just one of several cameras on my "If I get back into digital..." list.

Micro 4/3rds is the way to go these days...

Yeah, I don't get the 3:2 "full frame" obsession. I guess it's because of owning both a half-frame and a 6x6 camera, but I think that as long as the image is good, the proportions don't matter.

I caught up on developing and scanning some rolls of film taken on the Holga over the last couple of years. The film expired when I wasn't looking. And it went through the airport scanners a few times, because I kept taking the camera on trips and not finishing a roll. Much grain ensues.

Apologies if someone else mentioned this earlier. I don't remember they did. Mr. Ellis may be interested to know that some gentlemen in the Netherlands managed to rescue a complete Polaroid assembly line in Enschede. The machines were destined to be chopped down for scrap. The Impossible Project is to put Polaroid film packs back on the market. The original target date was last October, now it's April or June. Stay tuned...

I ask because I've got quite a few M42 primes kicking about and nothing else to do with them, so it might be worth the £10-20 for an adapter just to see.

I selectively removed the colour from the background of this shot and lowered the
saturation of the colours that stayed.

I played around with the colours on this as well to give a black light feel to it
and outlined it somewhat with black.

Here is a piece I've been working on all night.
Used my wife's eyes and made them into something rounder.
Found a nice skull photo I took many moons ago at the ROM.
I displayed on one of the more picturesque basement windows in town and there it was - done in 2.5 hours.

A photo of my dear late Grandma's hands.
I remember she was arguing because she didn't want me to photograph her wrinkled hands.
I told her she should be proud of them. They spent close to 100 years cooking delicious meals
for her children, her grand children and her great grand children. Those hands have comforted

COOP: I am deeply envious of Alejandra's Batman top.

Sigh... I was hired by a friend's band to take photographs of them. At first they'd some weird idea of creating a story with the photos in some way, or representing each of the four men as a different Tarot card. I was excited for this, because it wouldn't be... y'know... four regular looking fellows in front of a brick wall, like every other band photo is.

We met up at a bar, where they told me they'd abandoned the previous ideas, and instead we'd just walk around town and take pictures. Outdoors. At night. What do I end up with? Hundreds of noisy photos in dim crappy lighting of various brick walls and four regular looking guys, one of whom wouldn't stop talking.

Yeah, simple and dim and "Bohemian Rhapsody" as this is, at least NOBODY IS TALKING or emotively gesturing.

I'm not actually very proud of the photographs themselves. They should have been better. However, I am pleased with my tweakery to salvage them, heavy handed and dark as it might be.

A professionalism question:

I'd been hired to take photograph for my friends band (as posted previously). I uploaded a large batch of the worthwhile and tweaked images to a private set on Flickr as a sort of "contact sheet". Instead of telling me which they wanted, they've just grabbed the images already and started posting them to Facebook, which... has dubious ownership rights. Now I've got to try and explain that they've only agreed to pay for a dozen or so images, not a 50something sized set.

Is it permissable to add a watermark on a photograph for which you are being paid?

I think at the point where you took funds, it became work for hire, meaning probably not. However you can sequester the images they didn't pay for or water mark them.
doing paid work for friends or friends of friends always takes extra communication.

@Rachael: Unless you have signed a contract transferring all copyright to the band of the photos you took, all of these photos are yours. What usage terms did you agree to with the bands? Your agreement you mentioned only entitled them to 12 or so images, so no matter what the terms, they are entitled to only 12 images. Those photos are still yours so you have several choices of action:

1) Send them DMCA notice to them and Facebook.
2) Send them a bill for all the images they have used, with the 200% invoice mark up for their breach of contract, and let them use the photos.
3) Do both.
4) Tell them to knock it off, and bill them with the asshole tax.

This is your hard work and artistic vision, and you should be compensated for it.

@ COOP- I'm slightly embarrassed to admit that it took me a second to notice the nude model in your picture. The first thought was "Ooh, glow in the dark! That is so... OH! Wait!"

It's not that dramatic a change is it's literally directly above my old place, but I chucked so much crap and bought new furniture here and there, so I keep noticing odd little changes in the light and "props", which makes me get out my camera and, well... chair!

My hands are not steady, and shake a bit. This keeps me bound to shoot things at a high ISO and shutterspeed. With most of my photographs, I have to tweak and pull out the aesthetic that my brain saw when I took the image, even if not terribly under-lit and grainy. The comic strip itself is sepia-colored, which worked to my advantage.

(The Night Owls themselves made an appearance at a book signing by the Timony Twins at Rocketship.)

I could have been more subtle with the hair curl, I suppose. I may crop away the left side a bit.

This is a fantastic thread with some incredible shots -- I've been following along since the beginning, and figured I'd throw my hat into the ring.

This photo is a few seasons out of date, but I've been going through my large heap of photos that I never got around to processing/publishing....

Unfortunately, I've been banging my head against the wall trying to deal with colour-calibration issues. With respect to photography, I'd consider myself an "enthusiastic amateur", and can't really afford calibrated monitors nor calibration equipment. On my desktop PC (where I do my image editing), the image above looks too bright and oversaturated, but it looks just right on my laptop screen.

Does the image look grossly oversaturated to all of you?
Any tips for dealing with the colour-calibration issue?

Proving once again that I have no financial discipline, I ran out and bought a low-end monitor calibration device today. I know it doesn't provide pro-level accuracy, but it's a huge step up from using freeware gamma tools and eyeballing it!

Thanks - I was mostly attracted to the Zombie Royalty gazing sightlessly, but the flint is interesting as a texture. The church itself is mentioned in Domesday Book, but was rebuilt by the Victorians, so is a bit too tidy and pristine elsewhere..

I'm taking the same photo/darkroom workshop I took last year and applying stuff I've learned since then. I'm having LOADS of fun so far.

Yeah, so flowers are both cheating and boring, but I'm really enjoying the results of developing a few test shots from raw with the beta of Lightroom 3.

As someone normally deeply ambivalent about LR, I'm impressed. The higher-res version looks really nice, but you'll have to click through to flickr if you want to see LR doing its thang.. I don't think It's necessary to spam everyone with it.

We went back to the old textiles factory yesterday.There really is some incredible gear in here. It was totally abandoned in 2004, and is the oldest iron-framed building in Scotland. The whole complex is titanic.

Everything you see out that window is abandoned, along with buildings behind the furthest structure, workshops, and everything on our left.

@microclimate - I think we got lucky with this one. The place is in architectural limbo - I don't think they can tear it down because of it's historical significance, and it hasn't been developed for the same reason, really. It's just incredible. There's a room full of invoices, files, reports, "textile month" back issues reaching back to the sixties. We're hitting an old hospital later in the week and there's old convents, nuclear bunkers etc all around my area.

@Alastair - There's an easy as anything way to get in, completely out of the way and with minimal climbing. Using that to get in actually revealed an easy and out of the way to get out, too.

Right: The old building, off of George Street, on the left of which is the main entrance gate. This is the wages office, but it looks just like a house with a black and gold decorative fence on a two foot fall wall, lots of dense trees. On the right of this is a set of old flats. Go in to the flat grounds, around the right up some steps into the communal garden. When you get in there, you'll see a wall at far end. You get up on this wall, on the other side of which is a small drop onto a sort of gap-filler between buildings, big enough for a person. You'll want to walk along the wall until you come see where the spool of old barbed wire has been twisted up, leaving a gap. You can either scurry under this or just skip that and make the jump directly onto the small utility shed with a flat roof in the grounds of the factory. From this you can get down onto ground level from a makeshift platform of an orange drum. You can leave the same way.

We should have a look sometime?

I live in New Orleans. Most of the things I think to take pictures of have been photographed to death by other people already, so give me a location, a building, a piece of art, GPS coordinates, a vague description of some place you only half remember from that one time with the thing and the guy that may or may not have happened who knows how many years ago, whatever. So long as it's in metro New Orleans, and getting to it or photographing it doesn't violate any major laws (I don't jump fences if I don't know the owners), I'll get to it and try to come up with something interesting from it.

I put a name/copyright notice on these pictures, which is a first for me - would appreciate any comments on the design/placement/etc. I feel like it might be too obtrusive - I hate it when someone's mark completely obliterates the image - but at the same time I don't want to do myself down by making it illegibly small.

The styling of the mark is, incidentally, consciously modeled on Clayton Cubitt's.

I like the new Polaroid film, but it's a good ide to read the directions online, because they're very different from the old days.

1. Shoot preferably in temps 17 - 24 degrees C (63 - 75 deg F)
2. Immediately cover the picture to keep it out of the light
3 Hold the picture facing down 60-90 sec:

Instead I

1. Shot on a cold day
2. Gawked at the initially blue color of the picture
3. Fanned the picture back and forth

All of which I used to do with Polaroid photos. Except for the blue part. In the old days, they were dun-colored until the picture resolved itself.

The result was Example #1 -

Later I followed directions, but since the camera hadn't been used in years, it wouldn't always shoot. So I had my hand over the camera slot when the picture unexpectedly came out and I bent it.

Example #2:

Because you can learn from a bad picture as much as you can learn from a good one!

You definitely need to shield the film from the light. I've been taping a darkslide on the end of the camera, which helps quite a bit, but full sun will still cause issues.

@256 -- I'm conflicted on watermark/copyright size and position. For actual physical prints I'd go with something resembling what you've done. For the Web I prefer something larger that will definitely change the composition if cropped and take some time to clone out of the shot.

There's only so much you can do to prevent your work from being ripped if you place it on the Web, but then the massive amount of great visual material published makes it likely that those up to no good will move on to an easier target if you take steps to protect your works.

Really not sure what that last one is. Like a cross between a spirograph and a Richter Scaler. There was a whole industrial floor in one of the main buildings, with component drawers and blueprints, another couple of floors with invoices and order sheets. @Ray - Well, Parks-Cramer built textile and air conditioning equipment (Cramer being the guy that coined the term "air conditioning"), but who knows what else they built. If you could have gotten a closer shot we could use the power of teh intarwubs to find out.

@ Fauxhammer - One great thing about the SX-70 is that you can manipulate the film emulsion while it is processing by pushing it around with hard blunt tool. One of Peter Gabriel's album covers features this effect.

It can be easily done in Photoshop but doing right on the film is more spontaneous and definitely more permanent.

Are you guys familiar with JMW Turner's paintings? They look like this:

Art historians lauded his use of bold color, but guess what? The sky actually just looked that way when he was living due to a massive cloud of ash from a really fucking large volcanic explosion (Tambora, the internet tells me).

This one was because of the shafts of light coming through the gap, unfortunately they don't come out quite as strongly as I could see them.

Industrial bit of Delray snapped fromt he freeway on my way home from work. At night, this portion of the city, made up almost entirely of plants and factories is lit up like some sort of space port. It's my favorite part of coming home from the club at 3am. Someday, I'll get that shot.

My friend and I both bought Micro 4/3rds format cameras (Mine is a Lumix GF1, his the Olympus EP-2) The format is very friendly to legacy lenses, with a range of adapters available for the various styles of lens mounts. We've been trading old lenses and getting great results. Last weekend we had dinner together, and did some lens swapping.

Yeah, film-lovers often complain that digital doesn't capture as much information as film, but I think the problem goes in the opposite direction - digital captures too much information. Using older lens with a digital body kills a bit of that for me. Shooting at a higher ISO with legacy lenses also seems to soften up the digital "noise" that comes with shooting in low-light conditions, and makes it look more like film grain.

Both the EP-2 and the Panasonic GF1 are terrific cameras, and the universal mount and adapter rings mean you can fit almost any lens you have on the body. The Olympus has in-camera image stabilization and a better LCD viewfinder, but I think the sensor and processing are better on the GF1, plus it feels more sturdy and solid.

I am pretty sure that there is no way that a lens can physically affect noise on a DSLR, as all noise is generated sensor-side. Sensor-read noise, thermal noise and PRNU are not a result of light quality but sensor mechanics. The only type of digital noise dealing with light input is photon shot noise, but it deals with average photon flux, which isnt affected by the optics.

Question: I'm tired of dragging my DSLR arond, and being that it's 4 years old now, it's frustratingly outdated as far as noise levels limiting ISO to 400 if I want to stay free of grain, but my shakey hands limit the shutter speed. It's also reeaaaally heavy, and I'd like something a bit more portable since I feel terribly wrong if I'm out in the world without a decent camera (the fujifilm pocket camera isn't really pulling it's weight).

So what's the best intersection of portability and ability in the world of cameras currently?

Depends how small you want it, and how much you want to spend.

The micro 4/3 stuff is really nice, though the focussing on the Panasonics is markedly better than the Olympus models. The Olympus lenses are really nice, though- in an ideal world, the Panasonic body and Oly lenses are a good combo. Also, hipsters are going nuts about mounting old Leica M-mount and similar lenses on them with adaptors. If you have one of these cameras anyway, it's a nice option the day you find a vintage lens bargain on ebay or in a used camera shop. Obviously, stuff goes a little manual when you do this, but such is life.

The Samsung NX-10 is a similar, and has an APS-C sensor. Considering the size and price. It offers decent low-light performance and snappy focussing. The mount is a bit odd- the available lenses are limited- a crap zoom and a decent enough fast pancake.

Going down in size somewhat, a friend of mine has a Leica X1, which is fantastic, takes amazing pictures (APS-C sensor, like a lot of midrange DSLRs), but unfortunately costs a small fortune. It's awesome, mind you- focus is a bit pedestrian but image quality is terrifyingly good. Slightly cheaper would be the strange Ricoh GXR, with the prime lens unit- which would give you a fast lens and APS-C sensor in a compact unit (the zoom lens for the GXR is underwhelming).

Cheaper than that, you're looking at small sensor compacts. For something flexible, but relatively usable, that shoots in raw, the Canon Powershot G11 is a really good deal. Another friend carries one of those around in her bag all the time, and has nothing bad to say about it in terms of practicality. Obviously, it's a compact with a zoom lens, but despite that you can get away with a lot. She uses it handheld with a lot of zoom in dark auditoriums, and seems to do OK. Mind, it's Canon, so it isn't going to have the most reliable autofocus in the world, but it's still a hell of a nice little camera for the money. Really worth considering.

Another option is a small DSLR- the Pentax K-X is fairly nicely priced, small, and pretty decent in the dark. It's also available in a variety of crazy colours- which sounds flippant, but sometimes it's a lot less threatening than a traditional Darth Vader black unit. A lot of people are scared of SLRs pointing at them, they look too "professional", but a lurid colour can offset this. It's smaller and lighter than what you're using, and if you're not using a gigantic lens, it might be worth a look. File under "try before you buy" though, in case it's still much.

Personally, I carry a Ricoh GR Digital 3 as my bag camera, and have it with me 95% of the time. It's small, compact fixed focal length (28mm equivalent, F/1.9). It has surprisingly good low light performance, and extremely snappy startup and focussing- as well as the ability to set a default focal depth so you can literally snap shoot without focussing when you need to. I added the accessory shoe optical view finder and the ever-ready case, which means it's easy to use in bright sunshine, and can be thrown in a bag until needed without getting dusty or damaged. That setup makes it a lot like carrying a small rangefinder around- a brilliant street shooter.

It's a much much underrated camera, and if you treat the raw output with care (Lightroom 3 beta is absolute dynamite right now) it produces some astoundingly good images. Not everyone likes fixed focal length, of course- it's a matter of taste. I'm used to it though, in the spirit of "run what you brung".

Speaking of such, here's me using my new Moskva-5 before reading the instruction manual and discovering that the red dot doesn't mean "next shot is ready";

The rangefinder might be off on this one, but I won't know for sure until I test another couple of rolls. "Human error" tends to be the most common cause of my cameras not working right.

microclimate - Goodness! Fabulous advice! Thank you! I've got... some annoying and specific needs. My vision is really awful, so I can't rely on myself to accurately manually focus - that is, unless there's a very large live-viewscreen. Aaaaaand, my hands shake, so I need either really great low noise options for high ISO settings, or anti-shake. Aaaaaand I've become addicted to RAW, so that's pretty important. And I'm really clumsy, so I'd need something that's not too fragile.

The thing is, when I bought my Pentax, I was aware that there were smaller cameras that could suit my needs as far as image qualtiy, but... I really got the DSLR because, to sell myself as a "photographer" or at least "artist for hire with a camera" (i'm not sure if I can count myself as a "photographer" proper, since I'm still rather illiterate when it comes to the technical aspects of things, and have never developed or shot with film) I knew I needed the sort of camera that people find aesthetically impressive/intimidating to attract clients. And it's worked.

However, I maintain, that aside from wildlife or very technical photography, when it comes to artistic photographs, it's got very little to do with the camera. Sure, using a pancake lens is great for that short depth of field look that makes everything more dramatic, and I use that look often, but.... a a good camera isn't going to make a bad photographer good.

Anyway.

Hmmm. The Pentax K-X might be a good idea. I like your point about the colors making it less intimidating. Christ, it's just that my current Pentax, with the battery, weighs 793g / 1.7 lb, which is a fucking heavy thing to be carting around in your bag at all times, and has an ISO that tops at 1600 and is REAAAALLY grainy at 800 already. The K-X is 580g / 20.5 oz, which is an improvement, but that's hard for me to conceptualize. Here's where I've been comparing and considering and looking at... Looking between the Pentax K-x, X90 / Olympus PEN E-P1, P2 / Sony Alpha NEX-5 / Lumix DMC-GH1 / Canon 550D ... and wow. They are all lovely. Of course, everything I've listed is faaaaar out of my price range at this point.

It absolutely is the photographer that makes the picture, undoubtedly. The best camera is the one that you brought with you, and are comfortable using - every time. No amount of expensive hardware can replace idea, intention and judgement, or even a sense of mischief.

Oh, and I love the fact that you used your DSLR as plumage. Respect due for the chutzpah.

Edit: Did you also consider Vibration Reduction/Image Stabilisation/Anti Shake as a factor, by the way? Depending on how it's done, it can give you an extra couple of stops worth of stability, which can kick ass if you're not one of those annoying statue people.

Well, that's what sold me on the Pentax in the first place. I knew that the Canon was "THE" camera, but the I.S. in Canaon is in the lenses, and they are craaaazy expensive. Both Pentax and Sony had it IN the camera, and I nearly got the Sony since my mom gave me her old Minolta lenses, but every review of the Sony said it was very noisey and had those purple vignetting problems, so I went with the Pentax. I've been really happy with it... until now. Like I did with my last camera, a Sony cybershot (gosh, I miss having infrared filter! everyone's skin looks FLAWLESS), I've gotten to the point where I've learned the camera well enough that I'm now limited by the technical aspects of the tools I'm using, and it's really frustrating. I can't push forward much further. I could try a new lens, but... I thought a pancake lens is the best solution for low light situations, and it's just not enough to meet my demands.

The anti-shake is really important for me because my hands are not steady. But. If the camera has amazing low light ability, and I can use an ISO of 1800 without noise, as long as I can be at 50 or higher with shutterspeed, I could manage a to not fuck it up. 15 is iffy. 30 is still holding my breath and hoping.

1/15 is more than iffy for me, I have to admit.

A friend of mine uses a Sony DSLR and the Minolta anti-vibration lenses (whatever Minolta called it before Sony bought them), and swears by in-body and lens-based antishake all on at once for extreme haxx. Me, I am totally sold on Nikon's VR 2. This is a 1/30 handheld:

(Not stunning artistically, but I was delighted that it worked out at all, as there was a nasty localised strong wind whistling along between buildings)

Anyway, it seems that there's a tonne of good anti-shake options. Always nice to avoid one manufacturer holding all the cards.

Oh, also, the problem with Canon is that the entry-level lenses are something of a disappointment, usually lots of corner softness, and physically flimsy, some corners cut. When you go for their better lenses they are fantastic, but things get far more pricey. If you're at all interested in budget or midrange Canon bodies it can be worth avoiding the kit lenses, often you'll get better quality for your money from Tamron or Sigma glass on the front, assuming that you don't want to spring for full-fat Canon stuff. That said, no idea how good the anti-vibration stuff in Tamron or Sigma lenses is (though doubtless the interwebs know).

I should stop being a camera obsessive at you, really- but I do hope that you find something that suits you well, and gets out of the way while you make the images that you're after.

Hahaha... yeah, I've got an 18-200 vr nikon lens, first two days I had it I spent taking 'impossible' shots and marvelling at what I could get away with, the thing's incredible - could get sharp pictures at 1/8 at 200mm inside.

Absolutely- she'd just turn up with a basket containing a single camera, and use available light. I saw her "exposures" exhibition earlier in the year, and it's a perfect example of how the camera doesn't make the shot. Her ability to put people at ease and capture their essence is inspiring. So many of those images were iconic. Actually, they were often stunningly well-taken too, but just so unfussy.

Also, HCB always brings me up short. I was at "Exposed: Voyeurism, Surveillance and the Camera" at the Tate Modern last week, and while there was a load of stunning stuff there- including some really iconic Weegee stuff and the like, but without fail, the ones that had me stopping in my tracks always turned out to be HCB when I looked at the caption. Yes, so he didn't use cars full of flunkies, hell, he wasn't always in focus- but when he was off it was because he didn't have time, because he needed to capture the moment, which was more important. The fact that the picture was affecting to look out trumps all joyless pixel peeping every time. We could all learn from that.

Just fine, I expect. He could do a lot more with a lot less than most people, and wasn't against more modern gear- he owned six Contax T, for a start. However, product shots aren't really a good yardstick, any reasonably intelligent adult could take a short course on basic product photography, buy a generic Canon full frame DSLR and a copy of Aperture, and then crank out those underwhelming studio shots for "next week's Best Buy flier". There's not a lot of fun in that.

Ah, why am I telling you this? You know this stuff inside-out anyway. By the way, I loved the overlapping frames/multi exposure shot you posted a little bit earlier in the thread. That was a happy accident, thanks for posting it!

@William In some cases that's true, but only if one of the people you deal with actually knows cameras or owns the biggest and newest but doesn't know how to use it. I've gotten a lot of disapproving looks when I mention that I own a Nikon D50 nowadays, but thankfully, my work tends to speak for itself and trumps any techhead's comments. The most flak I've gotten is for working with the light of the area and not owning a lighting kit or something to help bounce the light. But that's all stuff that happens before they see the final product, which tends to make them magically forget all they said previously.

Is there anything technical about them or do you just move them around until you get the desired look you're after? Can you use them with a zoom lens, would you want to? I've got an original Lensbaby and a version 3, which is now known as the Control Freak. Mainly you just move them around until you get the look you want. The only thing technical is you can pop in different aperture rings. They are a complete lens, so you can't use them with anything else, unless you're doing some bizarre adapter strategy.

If you want images with the Lensbaby look, then I would recommend getting one. I'd lean towards the composer, because you can get different lens types for it.

Also, I have a question for you wise photo people concerning something that's been bugging me for a while.

Basically for the past little while there's been some tiny hairs and a few spots in my photos. As an example here's one of the shots where it particularly stands out: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2723/4532168388_4763d76474_o.jpg It's original size, but it's right at the top. You'll be able to see the spots and the hair.

After cleaning my lens countless times and even using other lenses, I've concluded that this is originating from within the camera. My guess is the mirror as I've seen what look like spots of dissolved liquid (I don't even know how). But even then it could be somewhere else in the camera. The big question is...what are my options on cleaning it? I know there's the brush that squeezes air, but is there a liquid cleanser I should be aware of? Or are there other areas to clean? Or am I just fucked? As for my camera, I own a Nikon D50.

Any help is of course appreciated!

@ oldhat - It sounds like you have some dust on your image sensor or I should say the filter that covers it. You can buy kits for cleaning the sensor but there seems to be a lot of opinions on whether this is something you should do yourself or bring to a professional. I have been considering doing this myself as I do have a couple spots on my sensor however I have a shaky hands so I think I will probably take it to a professional. There seems to be a wide variety of kits for doing it yourself and a wide variety of prices. If you are a DIY person give it a go but educate yourself first.

PS - Anything on your mirror will have no affect on your photographs. Your camera is an SLR (single lens reflex) which means when you press the shutter button, the mirror swings up out of the way so that the light from the lens strikes your film.

PSS - You will also have to find out a stable way to keep the shutter of you camera open while you clean the sensor. Perhaps just setting it on MANUAL and selecting TIME for your shutter speed will do it.

@oldhat- Hold the the camera face down, get a blub and try to blow it out. It should work for the hairs at least. If that doesn't remove the, there is a kit you can buy for it that should come with a variety of sponges to fit most sensors. Most camera shops, if they're worth a damn, will be able to clean it for free since it's nothing more than two wipes.

@oldhat the Giottos Rocket air blowers work quite well blowing stuff off the sensor. Not sure if the Nikon has a cleaning setting, but my Pentax has one in the menus that locks the mirror up so you can clean the sensor.

Visited (and toured) Frank Lloyd Wright's Robie House in Chicago over the holiday weekend. It was a bit of a downer to not be able to take indoor photos, but I got a couple good exterior shots.

The west "prow," looking in toward the living room from the terrace.

Shot from the southwest corner (Woodlawn and 58th). I didn't realize it when I was there, but the mortar for the vertical brick joints is a different, darker color from the horizontal joints, to emphasize the horizontal lines even further.

On our list on things to do in Chicago is go to the Oak Park suburb and tour the Wright houses (and the studio) out there.

I recently got a Lumix G10 (this week) and it's my first big camera, bigger than my previous cameras (phone cameras).
@microclimate has been good enough to help me with the buying and decision process and now I've started to actually take shots with it, so any help on how things are looking is more than welcome.
I'm not going to post single photos because I'm taking quite a number at the moment, but here's the flickr set I'm using at the moment.

Ok, I apologise if this is redundant, or has been discussed elsewhere.... but I'm desperately trying to collate together both an art site and a commerical site, and I'm befuddled as to HOW to group my work. This is more an issue for the artistic work, since I've far MORE of that, which stretches over much more time. The art stuff is less about selling myself, and more about representing it well, so..... Do i group things by subject matter? Mood? Predominant color? Location? Camera? Time period, with sub genres? I don't generally have sets from photoshoots, but rather, one image chosen from a series. I've been looking at other photographer's sites, and I can't .... seem to... figure it out.

I'm not asking for you lovely people to tell me exactly WHAT to do, rather, if you could advise me on how to apporach the problem so I could figure it out? Or maybe how you decided yourselves on how to set up your work for being viewed?

Anyway...

@oldhat - see, it's people like you that always make me feel like a photographer-poser, having no idea what to do in a darkroom. You impress me.

@lexmachina - Gosh, those are lovely. And I totally see the Lee / Bradstreet pose influence!

I'm pretty sure that's what they are. There's a huge colony of them in the botanic gardens in Sydney. These were the best two shots out of about twenty I took before my boyfriend almost bodily dragged me away :P

Rachael, HA! I still know next to nothing in darkroom stuff. This is just my third workshop in there. Trust me, you are NOT a poser!

Also in regards to set organization, I'm having sort of the same problems. It seems that if I separated every set, I'd have one or two photos in each section. How I'm doing it is I make the chosen sets very very general. So most portraits or shots where one or two people are the focus of the shot, I label them under "People". All the shots where the surroundings have more focus than the people in the shot, it's put in "Out and About" and all my individually picked favorite shots from each of those sets gets dumped in to a giant "portfolio" set. It's not the best method, but it makes it easier to look for some things.

@ oldhat - yeah, that's been my method thus far for the most part. If the focus of the photograph is a person, it goes in "people", if it's without a human, it's one of my locations. But what if it's a portrait of a stray cat? Is that a "people"? Or it's not a landscape, but a close up of an urban environment (like a corner of a barbed wire fence)? Is that Is that a "thing" or a "place"? Or if it's an urban landscape type shot, but it's got a person in it? ARGH! And should I lump together he photographs I took with my wee crappy Sony Cybershot from 2001-2007, or ditch them, and with it the bulk of my NYC photography? Goddamn, this is frustrating.

@Oldhat and Rachael, I would never be able to tell that you guys didn't have darkroom experience. That said, I think that darkrooms do give you a lovely sense of physicality in what is turning into a very digital/ephemeral field.

I also just love the smell of photo chemicals and the process of being in darkrooms. And my film photos are totally better than my digital photos. Mmmmmmm, toxins!

Edit: in an increasingly digital field, one is by no means a poser for not having darkroom experience. Plus, darkrooms are fucking expensive.

It's a Tatra- made in the Czech Republic from the mid thirties up to about 1950, at least in this body style. (They still make trucks, I believe.) These cars were very advanced for their time, and super fast. During WWII, the Nazis told their officers driving Tatras was verboten - too many of them were killing themselves with the combination of high speed and squirrelly handling of a rear-engined car.

@ Dorkmuffin - See, from when I was about 5 through till I was in Highschool, my mother had a darkroom. When I was little, i'd hang out in there with her, and the smells of the chemicals remind me of childhood. However, I wasn't allowed to use her cameras, and she never taught me how to use the equipment. I always wanted to, though.

@ COOP - I've been dreaming lately of getting my liscence, and buying an engine seized car of my dreams, and converting it to electric. I have a love for saabs of the 60's and 70's, and wierd VWs like the Thing, or anything that looks like a milk truck, or anything that looks like it could have been in Batman TAS.

@Dorkmuffin and Rachael My dad had a darkroom in our basement before I was born but it's since been turned in to a storage area. Either this year or next, we'll be cleaning the house up more and reviving the darkroom, which will be pretty exciting since then I'll be able to spend all night in there with my photos, my music and the smell.

In the meantime I go to a workshop that's put on for LGBT youth 2-3 times per year (which lasts about 8 sessions. Four for photo learning and taking and four for darkroom stuff. While I'm still very much a rookie in terms of edits, I am able to help out the newer folks in how to at least set up their images and make a contact sheet and stuff.

But yeah, the whole darkroom experience...there really is nothing like it. While my main photo area is in the digital realm, it really is awesome to go in to that big dark reddish room, put on a mix CD just for the occasion, take in the fumes and work for hours and hours on perfecting even a few photos. It's very magical.
