Things they are a changing. After much talk with a friend of mine, I have decided to get back into the making magazine business, with some tweaks. This time around, in addition to using MagCloud for distribution (though we are looking for something better for PDFs) we are going to go ahead and print the blasted thing ourselves and with hopefully a few small ads (alongside more pages) continue to give out or sell for super cheap at physical shops, starting locally and moving out from there. Would also be selling them online directly from us for shipping or shipping plus a buck, still working out details. The other big change is that with us paying to print the thing, we can actually give out a copy to any contributor who is <del >crazy</del> kind enough to send us stuff to publish. As always all copyrights remain with the creator, and they are just being kind enough to let us publish their work.

So having said all of that, we need some content! We are not going to print until we have handled the details, but most importantly we aren't going until we have enough content for at least two issues, so they are ready to go, and when life eventually pops up and punches me in the face, we won't miss a beat.

Make Something is a <del >POD</del> magazine project that is designed to be an outlet for creative work. Any form of creativity that can be properly shown off in a magazine format is allowed and welcomed. Fiction, comics, artwork, photos, poetry, travelogues, whatever else you can think of. The only rules are it must be created by you (no breaking of copyrights) and no nudity.

Upcoming issues need content NOW, your work can help.

Send any and all stuff to makesomethingmag@gmail.com

 Wanting to have everything done so it can be ready to be bought in late Feb, so deadline of Jan 26th, giving plenty of time for everyone to deal with the holidays. Everything will eventually have to be turned into a PDF file for the final product, but really anything I can open without having to get a specific program for it should be fine, as long as I can convert it to PDF in the end. And we are still working out the creator info part. There is thought to give a page to short Twitter sized bios, or may just put web address of your site (or however to find you) in the table of contents. It's the one issue that isn't settled, really.

 I would love to take you up on this, I think it's a really good idea...

Some technical points -

I think with self publishing (which in effect is what I think this will be) we really need good editing, there's too much shoddily edited stuff out there which can really detract from the finished product.
I only want to be involved in a project with a decent editing policy, for example assuming that people cannot ever edit their own material to publisher's standards (maybe they can, but I've seen little evidence of it) - so I would suggest something like saying that people who want to contribute have to agree to edit someone else's work, and then submit it back to that person for a final agreement.
NB: I'm not talking about editing for style or length - that has to be up to the creator - but editing for spelling, punctuation, typos, and maybe grammar (though with a presumably multinational creative team that's not going to be so important or easy).

I hope people don't think I'm being elitist or snobby or whatever - I am an evangelist when it comes to self publishing, I just think there's no point doing it if you're not going to do it properly.

Second - I think that contributor's bios should be on their pages, that makes it easier for the editor, and means that they (we) can format it however we see fit.

This does sound like a great project, it just needed someone to take on responsibility for starting it, and it seems you've done it. I'll email you more details but I would like to contribute two pages (consecutive!) preferably facing each other, for a story - maybe with a graphic element - but they don't have to be facing pages, and I understand that it would be more important for picture/art based contributions to have that. In return I would be willing to edit/proof four pages from either one or two contributors...

 I've been thinking about creating something called Morph, which would be a monthly or so magazine that switches theme completely between issues.
The first could simply be called Morph, and the theme would be transformations and change.
So, essentially you could post a comic going from pencil outlines to done and back again. (Or it could be about change as well, obviously.)
Write something about the nature of change, "you can't step into the same river twice" and all that. Write something while changing genre every 5 minutes, etc.
Take photos of construction sites, factories, decay, ruins, etc.
Know someone who wants to do a make-over, build a house or something? Document it with words and pictures.
As long as it can be fitted into the theme it's good.
I just thought I'd throw that idea out, since it seems unlikely I'd use it.
Any good?

 @mylightshinesapath I forgot the editing bit, between some friends and I, I have a group of people who actually enjoy editing. I will edit to add this, but yes we will look over all the little details like punctuation, grammar and the like and tell folk about it and then change it unless there is an issue, or the grammar issues is intentional. Most of the editors I know are or were pros at one point too so it shouldn't be too much of an issue to get it done, though more help is always welcome :D. The bios on the page sounds like an interesting idea. When it comes to the pages I'm thinking anyone who takes 2 or 4 pages has them together and across from one another. Since there's some neat stuff you can do with magazine design, where in some ways you have a very long page if you want to do any graphics. There will be a need for 2 or 3 single page contributions, but not so worried about getting those handed out right now.

@illogic that sounds like an interesting theme. Maybe for a future issue we could try it out? I was thinking of using themes later on once it got off the ground.

@newspaperdrone I may take you up on the offer, I have to wait to hear from someone I talked to about it several days ago, will let you know.

 @Oldhat, you are counted!

@kperkins, sweet, sounds good.

@tcatsninfan it sounds like something I would read, so since I think I'm final arbitrator on this, sure! I was curious about your trip to Japan thanks to the other thread anyways, and some cool pictures going with it would be cool.

@lampcommander glad to hear you want to contribute. My original plan for layout was a friend of mine to do a lot of the work and to watch over his shoulder to learn enough to do future ones myself. But: if newspaperdrone is able to pick up Quark and would like to mess with it, I wouldn't argue. I'm still going to practice and learn layout myself for the future, but want as few bumps the first time as possible.

And everyone, I need a decent guess on numbers if you haven't presented one, Either here or through the above email. Depending on some people, we have hit 28 pages claimed so it's pretty much a wrap on claiming for the first one, I would like to do a few of these over the year though, so if anyone else is interested let me know, can either have back up for this issue, fill any pages we haven't filled if the numbers aren't as I figure, or prep for the second issue.

 @jackcrowder, I'm waiting for exact counts from people, for this issue, but have you down for something in either or, will let you know.

@Charlene, will add your email to the one I created for this, and will let you know, I'd like all the layout duties sorted out before December is over, though I have to confess having so many offers for help is far from a bad place to be :)

@citruscreed as stated above, will get that sorted out asap. And as for content if not this issue, then the next one! I just came up with a solid idea for what I'm going to do last night when I should of been sleeping.

@texture that would be very cool, I think. As stated above, if not this one, then the follow up issue (I'm thinking bi-monthly, s would be coming out in April) will let you know.

And overall, what free time I have this week will be focused on settling all the contributors to a set page number and make sure the page count is at 28, and then will start handing over for the next one, also I will be setting up a dedicated wordpress for this. After Wednesday I will get to the layout and editorial duties. I plan on splitting the editing between a few people for quick turn around. Also, just received the first page of actual content in my email from kperkins which is quite pretty. Any other questions can be brought up here, or through makesomethingmag @ gmail, I make sure to check both daily at least.

 @Charlene, 2 and 4 are not the only options. I am just saying those the most frequently because the cool aspect of magazines (at least in my mind) is the designs you can do to unite a spread visually. Due to some essential aspects, like table of contents, and quick author bios (so everyone knows where to check out more of your cool stuff, even in just the 2-4 page format there will be need for one page pieces. And of course if someone has something that is perfect for a single page, would be silly of me to not include it due to it not being an even number of pages. Um... so yes, long round about one page is just fine and welcome, actually the only two finished products I have right now are one pagers, the cover and kpatrick's piece is also one page.

 @Charlene actually that isn't the set logo. My idea is to not have a standard logo and let whoever is doing the cover adapt it as they see fit. The tree came from me describing a lot of the themes and ideology that seems to have sprung up around the Get Excited and Make Things meme and also Ariana's POD discussions (manifesto), getting out of this old decade and changing and growing as we move into the next ten years. I'm quite sure the next cover will look completely different as will the following one.

 @jefflevlar, no problem on getting 4 pages for the second issue sir.

@Charlene it's probably a horrid and stupid idea. But I think it works better for the idea and the experiment (currently I'm planning on doing 6 issues over the course of the year then evaluating jumping out or not come next holiday season). A standard logo is something that is very important to most magazines, but they are also things to help identify and catch the eye on newsstands where a lot of times all you can see is the logo and that's it, so when you're hunting for a new issue of a favorite magazine you hunt for the familiar logo. I also kind of find a set logo to not necessarily inhibit but it does deny some cover design possibilities. Which is fine with a more focused view, but with what is essentially a literary magazine that has (in the first issue alone, and this is all off the top of my head) comics, an cross hatched ink drawing, a travel journal of Japan, photographs, a short story, and poetry, I don't know exactly how to set a logo up for that. I am working hard on labeling it and promoting it, and I know a logo does assist in that. But I really don't want any cover to look like another, why? Because no issue is going to really be like another, since the variety of people contributing and what they are passionate about. Like I said, I'm sure it's a mad mad idea and will shoot me in the foot, but it's how I see it. I pretty much want the only connection from one issue to the next to be the title and the concept, for people to make cool shit and present it to the world. And wow I rambled on a bit, and I apologize if certain bits don't make sense, when I'm less tired I will do my best to clarify any other possible issues.

Oh, and another general announcement, for anyone who is submitting, when you send the email, please include a quick bio/pimpage statement, no more then 220 characters please. Thank you.

 @Allen I understand what you're saying but I will have to respectfully disagree :P You obviously have a lot of thoughts on this. I'm just wondering why you feel this particular title design of the magazine, being simply a script font, is more suitable for what's inside than having a logo? The script font says nothing about what's inside, which I think is where your argument fails. It's essentially a creative magazine, as opposed to for example a more "news" based magazine or information magazine. I think a logo could be created for that purpose without the need for changing it every issue. The quality of a cover can say a lot about the quality of what's inside. Currently, I wouldn't look at that cover and then decide to buy the magazine because to be honest it looks like it was thrown together in 10 minutes. I'll not go on about it though :P It's your call.

 The first post has been edited to include information on editing, and other little details. But the other important thing, my marketing/PR brain bits have demanded there be a logo. It has beaten the artistic aspects to a pulp. As such I am running a logo design contest starting now until January 17th. In addition to the winning logo being plastered all over the blog and at least 6 magazine issues, I'm going to throw some kind of prize in there, even if it's just a small bit of cash. I'm sure it will be cooler then that, but if I fail to find something in the next month that's what it will be. I'd been having the argument about a logo or not with myself long before Charlene or anyone else (two people I chatted with about the idea before I really tossed it out there said needs a logo as well). It is easier to market a logo/brand, blah blah blah. So if you are the designing type, I need a logo to go onto the top of that cover! Thank you.

 And the first issue is now available for PURCHASE!!!!!

Was very shocked that the cheapest shipping still ended up arriving to my door in 4 days and I ordered on a Sunday! It's quite pretty, and there were only three mistakes that I noticed in the proof which made me very damn happy. Hopefully any remaining are very minor *crosses fingers*

 Congrats Allen and all the contributors on the first issue! This thread made me assemble my own thing through magcloud (to be released later this month) so kudos to you all. I will be eagerly awaiting its arrival at my doorstep.

@Allen
While I was assembling my thing I learned few formatting tricks that I feel could benefit your design , if you are interested and nobody thinks an amateur critique on a labor of love is in poor taste, maybe I could give some pointers or help with layouts for the next issue?
No PM system here so email me at munin.03 at hotmail if interested.

 @sgrsickness

Thanks for the compliment on the Japan article. I'm hoping to move there and write similar stuff regularly. Moving to Japan is complicaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaated...

Anyway. Word to the wise: don't get the cheapest shipping on MagCloud. The magazines (I also ordered Strange Light) came in a thin ass FedEx envelope with no cardboard inside...both magazines were creased and wrinkled to a ridiculous degree.

Thankfully, though, I emailed their customer support and they're going to send me new copies with upgraded shipping to prevent any other issues. Good show.

Great work on the magazine though. If I could offer one bit of constructive criticism though, what's up with the fonts in the magazine? I expected serif fonts considering it's a printed work. I'm not a typographer or anything but I've always been under the impression that serif fonts were for print and sans serif fonts were for online. The font size was also pretty large, at certain points I felt like I was reading a large print book.

 @tcatsninfan I do not know typography or fonts really, though I shall now go forth and look into that I just started learning InDesign about two months before I did layouts for this issue, tried to get someone more experienced or smarter then me to do it and that fell through with various people so I just tried it myself, that is one of a dozen or so mistakes I can see now with just an extra month with the program, which doesn't even count the other dozen or so mistakes I fixed after getting the proof, and again when I had to fix things to get a name I screwed up right. One of those mistakes was the font size, which I had screwed up in an earlier version just to get some page length ideas, and sent the wrong PDF to MagCloud, it should be fixed for all new orders, I sadly can't check this at the moment as InDesign is acting stupid.

 So things got a little bit delayed with the second issue, first work dramas, then prepping for the Fall semester, and now finals. So with everything else the magazine fell by the way side.

But I didn't mean to post and just bitch about things being busy. I am still 6 pages of content away from a full magazine, so I could use a little bit of help on that front. I especially am looking for a back cover of some sorts.

In case you're curious what will be in the next issue, I currently I have the following in hand (some of the text needs to get a quick proofread) two short stories, a travel log that I still need to go through the photos of to get down to around 4 pages, and two spreads of short fiction which includes the awesome twitfic that Texture gathered through Weaponizer, a comic, and then the cover I posted a month ago.

I have been laying the issue out as I have gotten things to get a general idea of space, and so not to have to cram everything in at the last minute, so the next issue should hopefully be out in the next two or three weeks one way or another. I figure if I can't get to 28 pages I will just cut off to the nearest page count that is divisible by 4 and go from there.

 Update: just sent off for the proof for the second issue, so it should be up and for sale by the end of the week as long as I didn't screw anything major up. I'm very happy with how it came out, and just have a few minor changes to make (proof reading everything again etc). I will also be reworking the first issue to improve all the errors and problems that were done due to me still not knowing what the fuck I was really doing at the time. I'm planning on rereleasing the first issue as a free downloadable PDF after it's all fixed as well as uploading it to Magcloud for anyone who wants a hard copy.

Beyond that, eyes are now set on #3 and making it a faster process, I do have enough content for a few pages, but definitely need more. A big reason this issue was held up was a lack of material to use, so I have been working on spreading the word and asking anyone I know to do so as well, any help on that front would be very helpful. More cool creative work is always helpful.

 Glad everyone has liked the second issue, I was actually flipping through it earlier and very damn happy with it as well. I really haven't put much time, thought, or effort into the third issue yet, so I will start doing that tonight in hopes that the third issue will come out much sooner then the second one. :)

@texture, no sir thank YOU for putting together the whole Twitfic affair together. During the time I was just hoping for enough content to be submitted, I would read one of the entries on there and just think that nearly a dozen people had submitted stories already. So eventually with more poking, prodding, and begging (not too proud to admit it) more would come through the pipeline.

@flecky just send your story to makesomethingmag@gmail.com. Along with a 220ish character bio. The piece should be anywhere between one page to six pages long once laid out, which is about a page and a half to twelve/thirteen pages in a word document.

 Update: I am in the middle of getting the third issue together, though still need a few things to make it whole. These include a front cover, a back cover (which is now a full page minus an inch at the bottom instead of the old two thirds of a page), and a few pages to fill in the center. What I have so far is as always fantastic work, and I need more of it! This issue is the opposite of last issue, I am really lacking in any form of prose this time around, so a good written piece or two would be very helpful, though don't let that discourage any other form of work, every kind of creative work is welcomed. If it doesn't end up fitting here due to too much similar content, there is always issue four!

 So our esteemed virtual land lord and all around love swami ended up linking this thread on his site today, which has greatly increased the number of submissions I received today. Which once I go through everything, means the third issue is pretty much covered.

Now having said that, do please continue sending stuff my way for the magazine. While the stuff I have right now will more then fill up the third issue, the rest of it will go into issue four, and if people continue to submit I won't have to go on my pleading and begging drive for the next issue which can lead to releasing an issue much sooner.

So any art, writing, comics, or anything else that is created and can be presented in a magazine, send my way. I'm also thinking about adding an interview every issue and would be very interested if anyone would be willing to do a piece on their creative process with pictures if they work in a field that lends itself to images.

 You can download the PDF from Scribd, you have to log in/sign up but it only takes a minute, and the site has a ton of great free magazines and other assorted works. And once I get the Zombie Conversational site up and running again the issues will be for download there too.

In other news, it is once again time for me to ask for more content for the next issue! I am mostly in need of pictures and art. So any photos, drawings, paintings, or anything else, as long as there is some kind of visual element that goes along with it, is very welcome and needed. That doesn't mean it has to just be visual, but to have a healthy mix for the issue I am looking for something that has at least some visual elements.

 I just put issue #3 up on Scribd, it can be found right here. I also just noticed as I am very perceptive and constantly vigilant, that when reading it on the site itself, a lot of the formatting for text is wonky. I have no clue why, it just is. The PDF is not that way, nor is the magazine itself when bought from MagCloud. So the best way to read it from Scribd is just to sign up/sign in and download the PDF and read it on your computer. The formatting is like in the magazine and it is still free.

 The rest of the issues are now also available for free via iPad (the option didn't exist when they first went up, and I forgot to edit them). What's interesting is that there have been as many iPad views as the number of physical copies sold, so it does get more eyes on the final product.

@Cameron it is such an original idea for using QR Code too. It was also the final thing sent to me for the issue, and filled the last hole I had for a more visual item.

@luckycreature Does it count as hard work when it's 90% fun?

 ack! Will be reshuffling my doodling priorities... Wanna try something new to submit to you... Very excited to see what youve come up with...!

As for PDF distribution, check out http://theillustratedsection.com. It's a pretty awesome digital comics site. They charge a couple bucks to list but I /think/ if you offer youre PDF for free they list it for free. I've bought from them and have Scrambled Circuits listed up there.

So, is color still an option for us or will it be b/w only now?

 Thanks guys. While there is no strict set deadline at this time, I would say that sending anything by September 1st will make have a chance to appear in the next issue, anything after will be set for the following issue(s). The issues will still be in color, while black and white only would be cheaper, it isn't all that much to get everything printed in color instead. I did think about the illustrated section as well, I wasn't so sure if it would have enough art to make it a proper candidate.
