Was just lurking over at brianwooddotcom and he's just released his Public Domain book as a free PDF. Anyone interested in his work should totally check this out.
Public Domain is a sort of behind the scenes design book featuring tons of supplementary material for Wood's amazing comic series CHANNEL ZERO.
Here's a quote from Wood about it :" Public Domain is a 145-page collection of Channel Zero "extras"... test pages, character sketches, short stories, unused artwork, photography... all material I generated while creating the Channel Zero world but that never saw print in the graphic novel. It was created, deliberately, very old school and low fi, using mostly a photocopier and a glue stick, the results being grainy and choppy and, in my mind, an accurate representation of how I used to work when I first started making comics.
Download this folks and then be sure to buy Channel Zero if you haven't already. A few years back Brian and Larry Young (who was handing the publishing side of CZ) were kind enough to send me free autographed copies of Channel zero, Jenny One and Public Domain. All the way to Pakistan! All because I asked. If you like the DMZ covers then you will lurve Public Domain. It is an inspiration to look at if you study design at all.
Yeah I agree. It's a great thing for him to do. And it's one of my favorite "behind the scenes" compilations. Channel Zero is still one of my favorite graphic novels. So low-fi and gritty. And I think the stuff we get to see in Public Domain is an excellent addition to the mythos.
Is it just me, or was Brian Wood as an "auteur" far more interesting than just as a writer? For whatever reason, when he does the art as well (CZ, PD and that lone issue of DMZ) seems to be far more interesting to me than when he is just writing. That said, PD is one of my favorite books, not so much for his stories, but for highlighting his designs.
You know Jim I agree with you about Wood and his "auteur" thing and yet I disagree. I think that many of our fave creators have an A game and a B game. I love the Couriers series and Supermarket and yet those are things he only wrote. And DMZ i think is a natural progression from Channel Zero. I think DMZ is strong without his art being there. I mean I love the work he does visually but it's nice to see how different artists tackle the material too.
Although that being said seeing a new series written and drawn by mr Wood would be AMAZING
As a designer, I was pulled back into comics (after a decade away) by the solicitations of DMZ and Local. I'm very glad to have this pdf. Khperi.com still has the book for sale, even though it's out of print. What a bargain! Great work. Great process.
Oh I definitely see the line that connects CZ with DMZ, but the game he seemes to bring is different when he does the complete deal (I think DMZ 13 (I believe that was the issue where he did the whole thing) is such a strong piece of work compared to the series up to that point).
In any event, Public Domain is a definite must see for any fans. Glad to see him put it out there.
