But the tale of amateur escapist Yorick Brown, the last man alive on an Earth now home to only women, and his monkey, Ampersand, is actually far more complex than Vaughan's description reveals, involving long journeys, the value of memory and the politics of gender roles. The title, which has had a very successful five-year run, is coming to an end this week with the release of issue No. 60. </blockquote>

    That Mr. Rambla, the vet who is getting pull quoted, is certainly getting his 15 minutes of fame out of this.

    I find it interesting how, despite the much more public face of superheroes these days, certain traditionalist tropes of the 1960s - for example, no guns - are still seen as basic truths of sub-genre. If you think about it, capes used guns in the 30s (and before that pulp heroes always did of course) to the 50s and again in the late 70s to, well now. However, the time when most people noticing these things grew up, and possibly read comics, was the short period when capes did not, so its the "law."

    Considering the fact guns are a standard heroic tool in video games, manga and anime I do not think the kids of today will have the same association.

    Once I was sure it was in for the long hall, as a new Vertigo flagship of sorts, I went to trades on it. It reads great collected.

    Yeah. I tend to be careful on Vertigo books I like. I won't go trade only unless it becomes entirely clear DC is behind the book until the writer is done. And thats not a very common thing right now.

    It seemed that for a long time there was a rather frantic search for a replacement for things like 'Preacher', 'Sandman' and 'The Invisibles'. However the need for instant gratification, in the form of a very quick and high sales, seems to make getting these kinds of long-form series done very difficult.

    Fables solved that issue for them, the need of a new flagship every 3-4 years. It has rock solid sales month-to-month and has no fixed end. Sadly they can't seem to find many other books that can find that sustainable audience. It seems like a rough time for the imprint really.

    I think the need of the creators to eat and keep a roof over their heads while they're producing their long-form work is probably more important. Nobody gets big advances in comics. If you like the series, buy the floppies or they may never be able to afford to finish the thing.

    I don't think Patrick perceived your comments as a swipe, Will. I think the comment was meant to encourage single issue purchases before a book dies out, if I'm not mistaken. I'm sure Patrick will correct me if I am.
