Welcome to the Draw Each Other thread for 2010. If you're unfamiliar with the previous portrait thread, you can view it here in all its arty goodness.

The concept is simple. Post a photo of yourself, and the rest of us will render your portrait in any style that amuses us. Last year's efforts included pencil and ink drawings, painted portraits on canvas, a large variety of digital art, and even some tiny sculpted busts.

1) Photos from the Open Mic and Self Portrait threads are not for drawing. Please limit your artistic efforts to photos posted on this thread.

2) If you're new and haven't read The Rules, go and do so before posting. It may save you from having the mods descend on you like the banshees of Hell, and more importantly it'll save the rest of us from having the thread closed.

Anyone can submit a picture to this thread, knowing that it becomes fodder for the artists here to use to draw from.

If you have art skills, we would love to see you take a crack at drawing someone's picture posted to this thread, but you are not obligated to participate. Many people who are not artists post great photos here, so as this thread gets underway, you'll see a wider range of great photos to be inspired (or horrified) by.
There are people on these boards who do awesome athletic things, dance, pose, dress up cool, and sometimes show their naughty bits, so if you're an artist, you will soon have a wealth of imagery to choose from.

So the whitechapel chatroom spawned a bizarre idea, this seemed like the best place to post it, so I'll see if I can paraphrase it well. This will involve some copying and pasting and two pictures:

Oh, in case it's not clear, you are wearing a kind of laurel/Roman headpiece that's wings, to reflect the eagle/phoenix symbol on your costume.

So last night I went away and typed up a quick comic script based on Andre and Sizer's drawing of Dorkmuffin and Oldhat as Amazonian Valkyrie Superheroes. Because their illustrations were that good, and the concept that kick-ass.

I believe the scribbly tiny text says something along the lines of "Able to heft large monoliths in a single lift. Not that she would because that would be both unethical and irresponsible". And the monolith turned out not nearly as large as I had planned, because I ran out paper. Whoops!

DORK & HAT page OH GOD MAKE IT STOP. Will Ellwood writes, I draw, Robin LeBlanc and Dorkmuffin star. One of these takes no effort whatsoever, and they know it, and they are LAUGHING.

It certainly could use more detailed scenery and more careful lines, but I am, as usual, out of time (and the skill to pull off believable sceneries -- or believable anything).

Anyway:

In the original script, the next page went straight to a scene inside the aforementioned DOOM ZEPPELIN. I presumed this was Will trying to be nice to me, so I wouldn't have to come up with and draw a goddamn DOOM ZEPPELIN. Proving once again I am a complete idiot, I suggested making a splash page of the DOOM ZEPPELIN myself. So as I draw the next page, the only person I can direct my hate towards is yours truly.

(although I'll still direct it at Will because it's just fun)

@CinnamonAndSpite - the colour tinge was just a result of taking a photo of the sketch under electrically assisted Scottish sunlight and then mauling the brightness and contrast levels in PS. It's funny how different it (the photo above) looks from the original pencil sketch actually. I should have made it smaller maybe. I'll try and scan the drawing at uni next week, see if that works better...

okay so - i should know better than this but i picked up my spray adhesive instead of my spray acrylic and yeah... i don't normally use such soft pencils but i figured okay - why not i'll warm up with this and then just seal it so it won't get blurred...>:[

This is so cool -- no one ever draws MEEE. i'm usually the artist in the circle doing portraits of people this is so interesting to see what people's impressions of ME are as i'm often reminded that i have some oddball twisting view of myself that fluctuated from hag to porto-blob. this is so much fun!!

So as I was perusing this thread I saw an image early on that sparked an interest in me contributing any way I could to this thread. I am a writer with little to no artistic talent but I do really enjoy coloring. So in my free time for the last few days I have been working on this:

This is, of course, the incredible Paul Sizer's drawing of Dorkmuffin and Oldhat. I had a blast coloring this, it was a lot of fun. I am pretty new at the whole coloring thing and don't have a lot of formal training or experience, since it does fall on me to do the colors for covers on comics I write I would appreciate any feedback you guys feel like giving (and should you feel like e-mailing it, feel free.) Also, I should probably by a tablet and stop using my mouse. That might help a little! Anyway, I had a ton of fun doing this, might post some pictures soon to see what else pops up!

Here is my wife a couple of years ago on All Hallows Eve dressed up as Cruella from 101 Dalmatians.
She did a bang up job with the costume and I remember being frightened of her that night....more than usual.

Here is my youngest son doing his impression of Bubbles. All he's missing is the hockey helmet.

I'm not sure how many people will know who Bubbles is.
He is a character from a weekly Canadian TV show called The Trailer Park Boys.
It's basically about 3 friends who live in a trailer park and look for was to make money illegally such as : growing weed, siphoning gas from cars and selling it, selling weed and hash at Church, holding up liqueur stores.
Stuff like that.
They constantly being hounded by the trailer park supervisor who is a drunk and an ex cop.
It is one of the funniest shows on TV.
I hear it is played in some areas of the US but they bleep out the many swearing and cussing.

Here is a 30 min. sketch with tons of sloppy mistakes. I started areas in ink and some in pencil and then cover those areas with ink. I am very uncomfortable posting this infront of anyone, let alone artists, but feel if I want any growth I need to do so.

I have been swayed! Dorkmuffin and Oda's adorableness and Ginja's badassery have opened my eyes!

So it is settled. Once I get a job that provides regular pay, one of my purchases will be red hair dye. Not too red, sort of what dorkmuffin's got going now.

Regardless I will need the assistance of a non-bald friend with more experience. I've only ever dyed my hair once before.

Before I get to the fifth page of DORK AND HAT, let me give you a glimpse of what it's like to work with William Ellwood (emphasis mine):

Panel 1.

We are on the deck of the doom Zeppelin, which is more like a sailing ship suspended below a giant bag of gas, as DOCTOR CROMARTY [2] zaps a giant ray gun bolt towards DORKMUFFIN and OLDHAT who are diving out of the way.

DOCTOR CROMARTY I don't know how to design his appearance. I want him to have a big bushy science beard and be wearing a kilt. A mad scientist with a giant ray gun and a doom Zeppelin that controls the weather.

Glad you liked it! I did get carried away with the hair - it was fun just loosely brushing it out without actually thinking about how long it really is. Mostly I hate the edge around it, though, but you live and learn.

@Laz - Well, look at Ray's headband or Elizabeth's clothing for example. The shape is good, but the texture is kind of indefinite. You can make improvements here by reproducing any weave or print patterns on the fabric, and by observing how the fabric's contours form subtle areas of light and shadow.

Terrific improvement in your work since you kicked off here last year, keep it up.

@Laz It comes down to training your eye to finely observe the subtle details of contoured, patterned and textured surfaces. You're already getting there with all the practice you're putting in; just keep right on drawing people and your perception will sharpen with use.

@Laz: Second on all the advice Ian provides.

Take a look at rendering small things about fabrics that show how they move; folds on a collar, patterns that go across a fold or wrinkle, putting a slight curve on a line as it moves across a body part. All of these very tiny things will reinforce the illusion that the fabric is laying across a volumetric form, making it more full and dimensional. These are subtle things, for sure, but when you nail them, it makes all the difference.

And above all, practice. Take a pad and pencil with you everywhere and draw snap portraits of the people around you - nothing hones your eye for detail more than being forced to note a lot of features in a short space of time.

Magnulus from page 34 as The Thing from John Carpenter's movie of same name. This is the first thing I thought of when I saw this picture and I had been meaning to do something with this part of the movie, so I had to draw it. I think it came out alright. I hope Magnulus has a sick sense of humor.

You have to get the image location, the one that ends with .jpg, which you can usually do by right clicking (or secondary clicking for mac), and spit that address into the box that pops up when you press the "img" button up there to the right of the "link" button

@Smileyfish, not to step on Mr. Sizers shoes, but I had a project that I needed to illustrate a 70's (hence the orange and headphone swap) DJ. I'm guessing the AD is going to go for my second version with a back view, she has a thing about obscured faces, but if she goes for it I'll post when and where. Or if your other half doesn't want to live on in print I'll swap out eyes and nose so even his mother won't know. Pub date is 9 months out so no big deal.

Thanks Paul, last time I got a 121 was when I made scrambled eggs for my dog when we ran out of dog food, but he forgot all about it when a bird flew into the window five minutes later.

@Paul Sizer: I have both freckles and blemishes, and it's no good pretending either aren't there, so, no worries about the dots. I like the dots. Someday I will post a picture taken with something other that my phone or my laptop, and everyone will get to experience me in all my high-res horror (glory?).

And I dig that my everyday earrings are mildly strange and you just made them stranger. Maybe they have powers. Maybe they talk to me. Whatever.

I'm always interested in how you all use your imaginations to transform a scene in a photo. I look at a pic and think 'what could I do with this?' without having much inspiration and then I see the picture interpreted and it's almost like I am 'recognising' the 'true' interpretation. Does that even make any sense?

@evelet heh. I have to confess, I've no idea where I came across Jurgan or Jaeger as my online monikers (tho it leads credence to a theory of learning foreign languages as a bairn being born an army brat in Germany)

Anyway, I kinda messed it up somewhat with the black... did the indian ink first and then it all went wonky when I tried to blend in the hair and such. Apologies there!

Damn, Neil, you are going in some incredibly unique directions with these recent illustrations, man! I love the combo of hard lines and almost out-of-focus parts, almost like a messed up depth of field. Kudos!

Thanks Paul, yeah the depth of field thing was something I used to do in life drawing classes, block in a silloette then detail an eye or nose - the theory being your mind fills in the blanks and focuses on whats important. It doesn't always work - I often get carried away and do too much detail, then I pull some hair out for an hour or two... :)

Sink means that Uncle Warren's bored with the thread, but not quite bored enough to close it altogether.

But if you've bookmarked it, it will still stay up top for you.

This happened to last year's thread as well. It means fewer new people will find it randomly, but this late in the game probably everyone who is interested has already found it.
