Ok, so I decided to bite off a bit more than usual with a new project this year. Specifically, a deck of playing cards done in the style I've been using for a lot of my digital artwork lately. Done at the rate of one card finished and uploaded per day until the damn deck's done. What's more, since I managed to locate a decent supplier of pre-punched cardstock, I'm doing these as an actual printed deck at the same time. Anyways, I figured I'd share a few samples of it here, but didn't want to overflood the monthly artist's thread with these, if people want to see the regular uploads as they come. So, check out a few of the cards:

@lazarus corporation, @oddcult, and anyone else internationally- ok, the page has been updated for international orders- given that the price I quoted for the UK also seems to work decently for most of Europe and other spots as well, (and since my little shopping cart app for Dreamweaver isn't set up for calculating postage by country) I'm just going with it as a flat fee for anyone outside the US or Canada. Which means some of you (Australia, you know what shipping to you guys is usually like) are getting a pretty good break on shipping- enjoy it, but please, don't abuse it. @RenThing & @adrianabbott- Unfotunately, the site I'm looking at ordering through doesn't list the stock weight- right now, I'm assuming more of a playing card thickness/durability, though in this case I'll be ordering them with a matte finish, as gloss would likely end up looking horrible with this artwork. So, it's kind of a tarot-playing hybrid- the matte stock you usually see in tarot decks, with the proportions of playing cards. Of course, with all the preorders we now have, I'll be ordering up stock samples this week, so we'll see- I'll certainly post up results if the samples prove to be any decent.

I see on your website that you've named the suits. Have you ranked them?
Also, these cards seem to be designed for display, rather than play, with the ranks of the cards pushed up into the square corners. Are you considering a modified design for a set with rounded corners?

@howyadoin- typically, by what's on the card- cogs and bones are fairly obvious, circles will always be occult sigils of one kind or another, and sea will always have sea life of some kind.

@MrMonk- I have not as yet set any kind of official ranking for the suits- that's typically determined by the game played, not by the deck.
As for the printing, they will be printed on round-cornered cards- the current images show (pointy points? What's the technical term here?) as they do because: 1)setting up rounded corners across multiple layers in photoshop is an absolute bitch. 2) because I'm also offering large-scale print versions of these via DeviantArt, which would print with blank corners on fully rectangular paper- which in my own opinion, looks tacky as all hell. Anyways, I'm over-explaining stuff, but the biggest and most important part is this- the numbers have already been placed properly, and will print just inside the rounded corners- we've checked, measured, and test-printed that part already.

@steevo: well, back on the tenth I'd still been thinking that I'd only be dealing with maybe twenty orders tops- and I'd found what looked like the perfect solution- a company that produced 8x11 sheets of cardstock, complete with pre-perforated cards punched into them, and a printing template. I didn't post what showed up in the mail because the result was so dissatisfying- the "cardstock" barely had any more weight than normal paper- cards ripped under the slightest pressure. And ink bled through from the reverse sides, so it looked like total shite in the end. nothing worth taking a picture of, even.

Now though, we'll be at something close to one hundred decks preordered by the end of the week at this rate- which means we'll be going the professional card printer's route- likely via Chicago Card and Game, since they'll handle orders smaller than 5,000 decks at a time. Matte finish is still guaranteed, though I won't be able to get a sample until the art's finished and we go to proofing. So, sorry to get your hopes up about seeing stuff early, but at least this way the quality is going to be far, far better.

And the deck will include the standard crest at least- that's the reverse side for all the cards. The inverted version, while awesome, may just end up as the artwork for the tuck boxes, or if we do a second printing, we may switch to that for the reverse sides, just to differentiate.

@Dmitri - Is using that as the reverse side gonna provide enough difference between front and back (them having the same background and all)? As someone who plays cards a decent amount, seems like on quick glance (i.e. when shuffling through the deck, etc...) there might not be enough contrast between front and back and people might get confused. Though I haven't seen these cards physically in front of me, so I could just be blowing smoke. Might be something to consider though.

After peeking at the Deviantart page I have to agree with steevo and Indigo Rose- the inverted is a perfect card backing. I'd never really thought about it before but the second steevo brought up the color difference between front and back and how it effects usability it made perfect sense.

@Alastair- The symbols for the Circles suit all come from existing occult/magical symbols (public domain versions, of course)- in the case of the six, they're six of the demonic sigils of the goetia. Wikipedia's got some good basic information on it if you're curious, otherwise, I'd recommend just picking up a book on the subject at your local bookstore's occult section- it's still fairly widely published, last I checked.

@RenThing- It'll be the standard 52 deck, with jokers, so 54 for the initial deck- if there's enough interest and such, I'll do an Arcana expansion that can be added to the original. Though if I do a Major Arcana, it'll definitely be widely different from the standard tarot set.

At first, I didn't realize the figure was kneeling, and saw a skeleton running the hell away from giant bone spears falling from the sky. I was very amused by this image, replete with flailing arms and cries of "Aaaaaaah!", but the actual picture is far more fitting for the mood of the bones so far.

Holy crap. Ok, just got a bunch of shots of the cards in process from the printers. Note, these have not been color adjusted or anything so their camera may be off on coloration with stuff. It should also be noted that they're still printing- I do not have decks yet, this does not mean they're here yet. At the same time though, here's our first glimpse of them as a real live physical object, and dude, that glimpse is awesome.

Things are getting close to the finished decks being shipped to me though, and once I get notification of that, we'll be switching from pre-order mode to full on order mode on the website, which means the price will be changing. So, if you want to grab them while they're still at the pre-order price, now is definitely the time.

All right, folks, it's time for the official announcement- the printed copies of the Windrow-Ravenswood Deck have arrived!

Qualitatively, they're better than what I hoped for. Comparing these to a standard deck of cards you'd get from a regular line or casino, there's zero difference. Paper stock is great and durable. The matte/linen finish allows for decent shuffling and movement, and they certainly don't feel like flimsy or poorly produced items. Here, check out the quick shots I managed to grab this morning:

The only bad side is that these arrived before my mailing supplies did, so we won't be able to start shipping until the 14th, roughly. But that's when the first wave of decks will be going out to pre-order customers. In the meantime, those customers here in Seattle who've pre-ordered decks can pick theirs up live at Abney Park's Circus at the End of the World event tomorrow night- just give us your email address and proof of shipping address, and we'll be able to hook you up with your deck in person. Or, you can still order decks online if you haven't yet.

Product review:
Cards pretty much as we've seen here and the size of a regular playing card as described. The cards are stiff enough to get a good shuffle and bridge but aren't too stiff that they don't bend slightly after one shuffle (but other than making them out of plastic there's nothing really to be done for it).

I am very pleased with this purchase.

Not being a magician myself, I'd think that they'd be decent. They've got a good weight, nice stiffness, and the texture isn't too slick that they'd slip but not so rough that they don't slide.

Everyone posting about their decks arriving- it's great to hear that you're all liking stuff at this point. Seriously. It's been one of the few things keeping my mood up while I was medicated out of my brain.

Wow.

And as of today, I'm officially off the muscle relaxants, and seeing a huge improvement already in my mood, energy level, and even pain levels. I'm not going to be an idiot and try to get caught up on everything at once, but at least now I can start operating semi-normally. This is damned good news.

In other news, I'm in a bind on one thing- there's about thirty international orders sitting here, and thanks to the prescriptions and other things I had to unexpectedly pay for with no other funds to access, my shipping account has been drained. I only need to sell about 4 or 5 more decks to cover the shipping fees, and then I'll be able to get stuff moving out again on monday. If people can help spread the word about the deck today and this weekend, that'd be a huge help. Or if you've been thinking about ordering a deck but have been holding off on it, now would be a great time.

Wow. Ok, I'm honestly really surprised to see that this thread hasn't been closed off, locked, or just plain dumped for space by now. Anyways, I figured I should pop in real quick, and let folks know about a few developments in the months since that last update.

For one, I'm still working on the book for the deck- that project hasn't been abandoned, it's just... slow. And continually getting higher-priority stuff shoved in front of it.

The biggest news? Tormented Artifacts got a major overhaul, and I converted around a ton of stuff on there- some new things, plus I'm doing my own print sales now, and the rates for international shipping have been seriously reduced.

And the same time, there's been more artwork and shirts added over to the t-shirt shop, including a remake of an old logo I did ages ago:

@RenThing- sorry, but the Gambler's Case was a one-shot thing, and it already sold- hand-burning that many chips is, well, a bloody pain. @RenThing- Oh, trust me, they'll be coming. They're just getting worked on in their own time- the last thing I want with those cards is to run the risk of them feeling forced in any way whatsoever.

So, a while ago I saw this, seriously considered buying a pack, and then forced myself to admit that I never play cards and can't justify it. The other day I started checking this thread with my girlfriend in the room, and apparently if we had cards like this we might find a card game to play. So yeah, looks like I'd better start trying to find a card game I'll enjoy playing :)

@Ben- Brilliant. As for games, I'm a poker fan myself, so there's always that, though if you're into more solo games, you could try out Clock Solitaire.

Dmitri- I have played clock solitaire in the past, but considering it's a game that can be 100% automated, I now avoid it :)

So, word went up about it on Twitter/Livejournal/etc already, but I figured I'd better mention it over here as well.

While I haven't had time to do an exact count yet, just looking at the remaining cases and cartons, I can officially say this- there's less than two hundred copies of the Windrow-Ravenswood Deck left in inventory.

I know, I know, that seems like a lot. Thing is though, that the last 100 decks are meant for event sales, archival, and a few other purposes. So, when we get down to one hundred decks left in inventory, they won't be offered for sale online any longer.

Which means there's less than a hundred decks left available for ordering online.

If you want a copy, you definitely need to be ordering it soon, as between other online orders, the book release when it happens, and GEARCon next month, that number's going to drop fairly quickly.

A huge thanks to folks for making the deck so popular over the time since it was first just a few images over on DeviantArt.
