Have you had a nice rest?

There was, way back in the mists of... 2007... a recurrent meme among several comics art blogs. Reclaiming characters from their owners, I guess it could be broadly described as... people were reimagining abused characters (chiefly Supergirl) as artistic call-and-response various places, chiefly LiveJournal. In the aftermath of that, I did a similar thing on old messageboard The Engine, called REMAKE/REMODEL. They were embraced as technical exercises, bits of fun, ways to get the brain moving. I think most people's favourite was the dear late Mike Wieringo's wondrous retro-aristo Buck Rogers...

I thought it might be an interesting thing to bring back here. So, once a week, I'll call a character, and you art types here can post images of your reinterpretation of that character.

NOTE: NO MORE PHOTO-MANIPULATION "art". I'll just delete them. People have been drenching recent threads with several pieces at a time that they've knocked out in photoshop in 2 minutes with no thought at all. I consider this to be taking the piss now.

NEW RULE: no more than TWO submissions by any one person in any one REMAKE/REMODEL.

    The point is REinterpretation: remake/remodel.

    ---------

    From 1944:

Shinto's tale is a strange one. Centuries ago, he was a samurai, one so mighty that legend says he was immortal. He did die, but scientists kept his brain alive for hundreds of years, hoping to place him in a body powerful enough to suit him. (standard mad scientist) hit upon a plan (or rather borrowed a plan from Doctor Frankenstein) and built a body from the honored dead - an arm here, a leg there...

I swear to you. Frankensteinian zombie samurai. What can you do with that?

    ------------

Your task, as ever, is to re-invent that into something a 21st Century audience could enjoy.

I look forward to seeing what you come up with, but bear in mind this is an ART thread. No pen-portraits. This is ART ONLY. Posting just a bunch of text, or a scribble and a vast number of words, will get the thread closed and your account banned.

    You have one week. Go.

Berserker--looking forward to your breaking the concept.

And to the rest, I'm looking forward to the madness. :)

Hmmm.... This one seems far too zeitgeisty, no good can come of this. Should be amusing.

...They had mad scientists in feudal Japan? Here's mine.

    Franken-Samurai a.k.a. Shinto Samurai

I have really got to beef up my Photoshop game.

Thought I'd get around to this one early, since I missed the last one. Here is a pencil/ink version of what I'm working on:
    Photobucket
I left the pencils in to give clearer separations... I'm in the middle of coloring it, but have to go to bed, so I thought I'd get this up, at least. After the coloring, I have a lot of effects and text work to do, too, because I really just want an excuse to work on my "design" skills. See ya tomorrow.

    Shinto Samurai

I just had to write a haiku for this. I included him armed with a bow since kyudo (archery) was one of prevalent arts of the Samurai and the bow was their principle weapon in the Samurai in the Nara and Heian periods until the sword superseded it. I wanted his right eye to look different having it infused with some sort of Shinto Mysticism. Perhaps having it blessed by Machiman, the Japanese god of War, whom was often depicted as an archer. The bonsai tree in the background was just a little last minute thing because I used to love doodling bonsai tree.
