Okay, I've been trying to set up two residencies a week this month. Well, I kind of blew that, this past week. So this week's second Q&A residency is with, um... me.

I won't answer anything that's already in the FAQ, and you should probably read that first. It's not long, just the first post there.

Other than that... for the next five days I'll field questions and probably jabber randomly at you a bit.

And, by now, you'll know that I'm interested in more than comics, so there's no need to keep to that subject.

Recently, I very much enjoyed FINCH by Jeff Vandermeer.

Not really the way I think about things, because I think it makes for bad comics -- parsing your sentence as "if I could turn it into film or tv," because of course I'm a comics writer and I turn everything into something visual...!

The WEF was an ill-informed lab experiment that overflowed the petri dish, the building the dish was in, the town the building was in, and threatened the world before I sprayed it with paraquat.

The Engine was a very intentional, controlled and size-limited lab experiment that lived for a couple of years before showing genetic degradation, and so required humane extermination.

This place was just intended as a cheap and dimly-lit back room for a rolling afterparty.

I want to bring up something, a friend and myself accidentally were discussing about comic book writers some weeks ago. He thought to have made the observation that your stories mostly seem to lack an actual “emotional” component. He thinks, it’s because you’re not really capable of it, I said “I guess it isn’t his thing … it’s just not what he does.” He insists on the opinion, that some emotional tones would upvalue stories in general, so to speak.

I found a quote on Newsarama, where you – asked about “the lack of romance” in your work – said: “Do I come off as an animal if I say romance only happens in romance novels? Relationships between men and women are a lot more complex than that, usually a lot more edgy and nervous and spiky than that, and I don’t think it’s honest to write the kind of romances—Hollywood romances don’t get anywhere near the human condition.”

So, I really think this is interesting, aside the romance thing – does your stuff mostly lack “emotional components” because you think human emotions are too complex to actually being properly mirrored into comic book fiction?

A question that's been rattling around in my head for a while - if you had to present someone completely unfamiliar with your portfolio with just one work as an example of what you do, what work would you choose?

It's a daft question, because first you have to ask them what they like. If said person hates history, I'm not going to hand them CRECY. If they hate sf, I'm not going to hand them TRANSMET. These questions never take into account the person being presented with the work.

If I'd never heard of Joss Whedon, and someone had said to me, "Joss is cool! Here's DR HORRIBLE!" I never would have read or watched another thing he did, because I loathe musical comedy.

I was curious if you've seen a greater demand to turn your comic works into filmed entertainment. I know Red is filming and Gravel is in the works, but I was thinking more of the desire you stated the other day about working in television. Shows that defined the last decade (Sopranos, BSG, The Shield) as staples for their networks have ended and have yet to be replaced. Crooked Little Vein (I know it's not a comic) would make a fascinating TV show with the novel serving as a template for season 1.

I suppose my question is do you have anything in the Ellis canon that you really want to see as a TV show?

1. I've often found it amazing how you're able to write so many things in a day and can still come online and torment/love us. Do you have a schedule for that kind of thing, and if so can you run some of it by us? Just wondering how you do your amazing time management.

It's all on instinct, but mostly the other stuff is done during natural pauses in the work, where I can't quite see how to get to the next bit yet, but don't want to leave the keyboard and let my fingers get cold. So I flick up Whitechapel, Feed Demon or the Post2Blog window, just to keep typing, until the story unsticks itself and I can bring the manuscript back up...

Working with George Perez. George is a lovely guy. We were doing this thing, and he wanted to work Marvel-style, where he'd draw the pages based off an outline document, and I'd go in afterwards and add dialogue. That's what George wanted, so, for him, I did it. And then I got the pencilled pages back.

Most artists, when working in this way, leave dead space for speech-balloon opportunities.

George fills every millimetre of every panel with the most exquisite, crystal-lined pencil illustration. You could have shot off his pencils, it was like a grey printed page.

And it was my job to cover this beauty up with words.

He said to me afterwards, "that was one of the tightest scripting jobs I've ever seen. How did you do that?"

And I fairly screamed at him, "I WAS TRYING NOT TO COVER UP THE PRETTY PICTURES! I'VE NEVER USED THAT FEW WORDS IN MY LIFE! I AM ALMOST COMPLETELY BLIND NOW? WHAT ARE YOU LAUGHING AT?"

Happy. It's a fucking death trap that should never have been flown.

But also:

Sad. Because it's another element in that which has become disappointingly inevitable -- the end of human spaceflight from an American agency. Possibly just from an nostalgic point of view, since when I was growing up NASA was the space programme, you know? It had the potential to be Really Really Good, whereas the Russian programme (which, in retrospect, was more practical) was just tractors in space.

(Virgin Galactic is NOT human spaceflight, before anyone asks.)

The Chinese programme will become the one to watch. It's old-style command-economy spaceflight -- unstable, quickly-assembled flight articles flown by test pilots who will only be made famous if they live, and discreetly swept into a mass grave if they don't. Don't look for them to put people on the moon, though: they're going to take the Russian option and put a robot rover down. Which will bother the Americans not at all, and will not galvanise the new space race that some people are expecting expanded Chinese spaceflight to cause.

I'm coming to the conclusion that, basically, we're stuck here. And given that our chances as a species of making it to the end of the century in hale and hearty condition are dropping every day... we're all going to die here. And so are your kids.

I'm coming to the conclusion that, basically, we're stuck here. And given that our chances as a species of making it to the end of the century in hale and hearty condition are dropping every day... we're all going to die here.

I at first I thought "how bleak", but then I came to my senses and though "How hopeful, for the rest of our universe". Sure that first crew might be our best and brightest, but more likely it will be type A jock assholes in spaaaaaaaaaaaaaace.

I have seen how all those stories end. We don't get up there and develop space madness, we take our normal land madness up there with us.

I was hoping the end of the space shuttle program would mean the beginning of something sexier. I just don't know what that is and i sure dont want to get on it myself. I do know someone with graphic design skills should right now be churning out a 1970's Style Space Patch with the slogan USSR "Tractors in Space" for a possible future T-shirt of the week.

I just read that Twilight will be turned into a graphic novel to be published in March (more here). It's not the first time that a popular film has been turned into a graphic novel/comic. Do you view such works as pure merchandise or do you lend any credibility to them? How do you view the author/artist who sold their souls into this production? As you can tell, I find it quite hard to take such graphic novels seriously. Or maybe you see it as a positive thing as it could introduce more readers into the world of comics.

Disclaimer - not that I take Twilight seriously anyway. It was just an example.

It's hardly selling your soul. It's taking a work-for-hire gig on its own merits. Frankly, it's no different from working on Marvel or DC characters -- a decision one takes to raise one's profile and get some financial security for a while. There's no indication that this artist is going to spend his entire life doing TWILIGHT comics or anything.

I'm really trying to avoid a lot of it, because nothing useful will be concretised until we see the thing in action (though I'm very impressed by Apple's stealth ad campaign).

IF it does everything the seers seem to think it does, it's going to be an unusual situation where Apple are inventing a user case rather than trumping other players in an extant user case (such as with the iPod). There is no user case for an iSlate -- they will be inventing a magazine reader.

My suspicion, which is not to be counted on a week from now, is that Apple want to get further into the broadcasting business. They want to be broadcasting magazines and newspapers, they will partner with people like Murdoch to do so, and it'll all be pay-gated. I also kind of wonder if they mightn't also partner with Hulu, help them with their own pay-gating, and take a piece of that.

In re: digital comics - there's a 50/50 chance that something like Longbox will be onboard the iSlate when it ships. I call it 50/50 because the rumours are strong, but I don't believe that Apple would ship a device with an app onboard that hadn't been through the Apple design process.

I'm not sure if it'll matter, because an iSlate will very likely be at a non-trivial price point, much less portable than a phone, and much dumber than an Apple laptop (otherwise they cannibalise their own market). I don't see a million comics geeks buying one each and killing the bricks-and-mortar store network.

I meant that little creativity can be put into the story since it's already been written and I am assuming that the artist will be told to base the graphic novel on the look and actors of the film but of course I agree that I was going OTT. I'm still too idealistic in that I don't want my creativity to be controlled but I guess that I should grow up and realise that most people work to fulfil some kind of imposed criteria.

Has this sort of idea ever come up in your frequent brainstorms over the state of the magazine industry, or have you ever seen this done?

That is so incredibly complicated that I don't think anyone's gotten to the point of executing that plan due to their brains exploding first.

I get the impression that established creators who hate everything they do within a week fall into two broad groups.

Passionate craftsmen/women with their ego in check, who are constantly striving to do better work.

OR

Innovators with an ideal in mind against which they measure all the work they have to do in order to satisfy an established market and pay the mortgage.

Occasionally a little of both.
