@jay brennan "I'm not sure about your assumption of a paradox because the island appears to not have sunk until the late '70s to early '80s"

that is why I make that assumption.

Timeline A is occuring in 2004
Timeline B is occuring in 2007

Yet, it was revealed in timeline A that the island is under water????????
So either the island is somehow brought to the surface before 2007
    or Time Paradox.

To me Time Paradox is more interesting and can "explain" most of the weirdness happening in that island.

Although my favorite theory about the island is that it exists in the realm of the aboriginal "dream time" Jesus, i'm starting to drip nerd juice. Need a wipey.

Or the Losties did something in their time-jumps to the past which unintentionally prevented/caused it's sinking.

Bood, it seems like you're suggesting both timelines are physically occurring on the same Earth - the two are entirely different realities; the state of the island in one has nothing to do with the other. And we can be fairly certain that the outside world in Timeline B (which is actually 2008 by now, as I recall) is still functioning as we knew it, because Widmore's finally shown up.
Some bloody resolution there would be nice though, what with his special powers of polar-bear manifestation and such.
Given what we've seen since then, I imagine we'd have learned by now that Walt was somehow born on the island. Something else that we could yet see is Jacob visiting him as a baby - they could do that without even needing Harold Perrineau back.

I guess many of us are making assumptions, mostly due to the show providing too many questions and few answers.

I am looking forward to hearing what Widmore has to say, if he says anything.

Will check out next ep. tonight at HUlU

The thing that intrigues me most about the alternate timeline-thing, is that the witers apparently plan to integrate the two pretty soon. Which makes me wonder what the point of the alternate reality is, besides showing that a lot of lives turn out for the better without Jacob's influence.

Another thing, about the Man in Black's comment on his mother. Given the parallels Lost has with Shakespeare's Tempest so far, does this make him Caliban and his mother the witch Sycorax?

    Edit:
The Tempest, act 2 scene 2
Stefano: "[...] But none of us cared for Kate."

    @coffeemug:
"My mother? Let me tell you about my mother..."
I note how several reviews of latest ep use the phrase "Mommy issues are the new Daddy issues".
Plus, much love for Tempest bit.

Much as I am enjoying the season, I do wonder if the Ultimate Explanation is in fact either a) actually forthcoming or b) will be better than fan theories. I somehow doubt both, but we shall see.

Anyone else feel that the story could do with actually being more complex at this stage? After all, if anyone's jumping on board at this late stage, they can just rent the previous seasons & catch up... so the hand-holding seems unnecessary.

My thinking is increasingly that Jacob isn't as much like a Jesus or Obi-Wan Kenobi figure - but rather, takes after Leto Atreides a la /God Emperor of Dune/. I hope, anyhow. It would be far more interesting if Jacob was engineering this entire situation in order to see if humans can be predictably and deterministically engineered to be good, but even in the face of that, choose freedom instead. The bit in the lighthouse with Jack seemed to point in this direction - that Jacob's precognitive and reality-shaping abilities point towards a future so perfect and so determined, that it horrifies him. And so from the outset, he set out to engineer the destruction of that system in such a way that a perfectly determined future could never again come to pass.

This is what I'm hoping Jacob is seeking in the 'candidate' - someone not perfectly good, but with a wild factor of freedom that will lead them to not repeat Jacob's own mistakes. I'm really hoping for this, because it would be a lot more interesting than a simplistic battle of good vs. evil.

Man, part of me had given up on ever getting a RIchard Alpert/Black Rock episode. Fucking fantastic.
And serious props to the guy who guessed "cork".

Yeah, Finagle's thing sounds about right, judging from last episode.

Did anyone else get a bit of a Babylon 5-vibe from the way the conflict is being presented? Vorlons and Shadows, neither actually good or evil, but nevertheless dressing in the whole dualism getup and dragging people from the outside into their own petty (and ancient) squabbles. Down to the point where the Man in Black pretty much states the "what do you want?"-question.

I'm absolutely convinced at this point that the whole thing is just a really elaborate ride at Disney World.

@coffeemug: An ex of mine got me into the series around the middle of season two, and the first thing I asked her after watching about six episodes in a row was "have you ever seen the show Babylon 5? It's like this, but in space, and funny."
  7.  (7693.15)
@coffeemug&Alan Tyson - what I'd give to have Jack facing off with Jacob & SmokeyLocke, yelling "Now get the hell out of our galaxy!"
  8.  (7693.16)
I've been watching Babylon 5 recently and discussed this very thing with one of my friends. Mind you I was surprised at how good some of B5 was, but thats a different and entirely pointless thread.

Back to Lost. Check out Ahura Mazda and Angra Mainyu, they are so similar to Jacob and MIB.
  9.  (7693.17)
I've certainly been hoping it does something in the B5 vein. There's a definite risk that Jacob's just going to turn out to be an infinitely good guy and that MIB's going to turn out to be the devil. Then again, I'd like to think that what Jacob said about not wanting to interfere might not be true, and that in fact something else might be preventing him from doing anything other than asking people to do stuff.

Guess this was unavoidable, but this one felt a little underwhelming after last week. Loved Amazing Grace in the teaser, though.

I'm kind of dissapointed that Charles Widmore's "secret weapon" against "Smokey-Locke" revealed at the end of last night's episode turned out to be
Desmond, instead of Walt. But I can understand why they would want to get away from using the cliche deus-ex-machina "Wonderchild" trope .
But thinking about the choice more today, I am beginning to think and understand why Widmore would end up using Desmond for the final battle.

I guess we'll have to see what happens next week....

Maybe I'm forgetting something, but I can't even begin to understand what he expects Desmond to do.
