I found something wonderful, and I'm curious to know if there's anything else like it.

At the ripe old age of 36 I finally (last Christmas) purchased a video game console, something I thought I'd never do. The Playstation 3 had just been released, so I thought the time was right to get myself the previous gen Playstation 2 and satisfy my curiousity about some of the titles available for the system.

I've always been first and foremost a text adventure fan, because I can't help thinking that there's potential for something wonderful in that form. Apart from that I was mostly drawn to adventure games -- exploration, some potential for story and atmosphere more than running and killing -- but some of the horror titles looked as though they might have enough atmosphere to make all that killing worthwhile. I was specifically interested in a thing called Rule Of Rose that wound up being banned in Britain because it depicted orphan children engaged in cruelty to animals and one another. Edward Gorey stuff, basically, without the humour or much of the charm.

Then I read about a thing called Shadow Of The Colossus, and its prequel ICO.

Having sought out copies of both of them, I can now say that these two games alone make owning a Playstation worthwhile. ICO basically takes place in Gormenghast Castle, while Colossus pits you against enormous stone and earth creatures who you must literally mountain-climb (as they try to shake you off) in order to kill -- and then when you do kill them, you feel bad about it because they're so goddamned beautiful. I mean, you feel like you've murdered a whale, which is just what designer Fumito Ueda wants you to feel. Both games are the product of the same eccentric Japanese designer; both contain stunning environments, truly lovely background music, and a pervasive sense of melancholy; both are strangely minimalist (there's no distracting heads-up display to distract from the immersive experience of the gameworld itself).

The nearest I can come to explaining their appeal is that, though they are wonderful to play, the overall effect of each is more that of an art installation than a game. Perfect, elegant game design, and as far as I know there's nothing else quite like them.

On the other hand, I've already got them, so I don't need anything else like them. What I'm wondering is, can anyone recommend any other games, for any platform -- pc, console, even rpgs or role playing games -- that just stand eccentrically apart, doing their own weird thing? Or simply wonderful games that have somehow managed to be overlooked?

Anyone got any cult games or games that deserve cult attention? A game I'm very fond, actually, is one that Warren was involved with called Hostile Waters. It's the kind of thing I probably never would have gravitated toward it if he hadn't been involved, so as far as I know it might not even be particularly original or well-regarded, but I keep going back to it.

Anybody?

Rez, a Sega Dreamcast game also released for PlayStation 2 and coming to XBox Live on 360 in 2008.

It's set inside a futuristic computer network, where the controlling AI, called Eden, has become overwhelmed with the amount of information available on the network and, essentially, has suffered an existential crisis. The player takes control of a hacker making his way through the systems of the network to solve the problem. A rail-shooter, you don't control movement. You only choose where to shoot as you traverse a polygonal, abstract mindscape.

It's a metaphor of spiritual revival. It's last section is a re-telling of the creationist myth, shifting from the primordial ooze to single cell organisms to mountains being formed to creatures crawling forth from the water, and so on.

Each enemy destroyed by the player changes the music, adding instruments and notes. It creates a form of synasthesia, blending player action with an evolving, atmospheric trance soundtrack.

It's intensely beautiful. No one bought it. Videos of the entire game are available on YouTube, should you want to see it in motion. (I'd link to a list of the videos, but for some reason doing so screws up the template).

In Japan, the PlayStation 2 version of the game was sold with a Trance Vibrator that pulsed along with the music. It was business-card sized, shook far more violently than the standard Dual Shock controller, and can reportedly be used as a masturbatory aid.

Does Eternal Darkness for the gamecube count? None of my friends who play video games seem to have ever heard of it. It's the only really good interpretation of Lovecraftian cosmic horror in a video game format. I think a lot of people have missed it by virtue of it being only on the Gamecube. I really enjoyed it, and I'm playing it again now because my girlfriend bought a Wii and it's backwards compatible with Gamecube discs.

In terms of the "cult" experience, you probably can't have a much more appropriate title than Squaresoft's 1998 bugfuck-crazy Playstation 1 game, Xenogears. Not so much a game as a vehicle for mytho-psychological narrative told through Judeo-Christian iconography with giant robots and The Empire Strikes Back references. I'm not even sure if the game is technically complete, since most of the second disc is short gameplay stints between long narrative scenes that play out various aspects of the characters' psychodrama.

Like the anime series (that Xenogears creators say somehow did not influence them at all, which I find insanely unlikely) Neon Genesis Evangelion, the cult-base seems to be driven by fans with conspiracy-like theories of how the narrative and Judeo-Christian iconography "work," rather than recognizing these as metaphors, settings through which psychological bugbears are confronted as physical ones. But let's face it, when you make a game where the giant anthropomorphic robots the characters ride in are literally crucified, you should probably expect a weird response from fans of your weird game.

Avoid it's spiritual successor from Monolith Soft, Xenosaga, for the PS2, like the plague.

Eternal Darkness was great! I know a few games since (any before? Not sure...) have used the sanity meter thing (first time it did one of those mock crashes sent me into a panic) but that really was a classy game. I started playing it after a boyfriend kept getting pissy at me for figuring out the puzzles and stealing the controller. And I've hit that wall of raving to people about it only to be met with a blank expression.
ICO was also a pleasure to play, a different gaming experience than I was used to.

Actually, I did quite like a game called Evil Twin. It wasn't amazing, but I loved the look and it was quite fun.

Also, did anyone play American McGee's Alice? It looked like it'd be rad, but I could never find it.

For me Ico beats out Shadow of the Colossus because as well as having the responsibility of looking after Yorda, it doesn't drag in the travelling between Colossi - whatever you do in Ico though, don't switch off when the credits run, wait until the very end...

Best. Game. Ever.

And I'm a XBOX (now 360) freak, so it hurts to say it's better than Halo.

---

Eternal Darkness - brilliant. Especially the (in)sanity effects, which make you think you've screwed up...or your controller is unplugged...or the console has crashed...or another three dozen effects.

---

American McGee's Alice starts off brilliantly, with the scene set with a well-written diary of descent into madness in the game box, but the game just doesn't live up to it - lots of imagination in the levels and characters, but it plays like a bog-standard platformer for much of the time.

Great responses -- Many of these titles are new to me, and sound very interesting indeed. I'm definitely going to check some of them out.

I just remembered another odd one.

The Neverhood was published by Dreamworks Interactive, and as far as game mechanics were concerned it was just a sidescrolling adventure game. Where it was significantly different, though, was that the entire game -- your player character, all the other creatures and every environment -- was entirely handsculpted out of clay. People who consider stop motion animation an art form (and anyone who knows the Quay Brothers or has seen Susie Templeton's new Peter And The Wolf film does), and have an appreciation for the effort it involves, have to give the game some credit on that basis alone.

Genre: Adventure.
You are an amnesiac (no! wait! it gets better! Planescape: Torment also features an amnesiac and it's a rockin game, right?) who wakes up in an abandoned mental asylum. Escape is easy enough but then you have to struggle through your own damaged subconscious and regain your sanity.

Genre: Action/Adventure
Raz is a young acrobat who has run away from the circus to attend a summer training camp for psychics. His dream is to become a psychonaut, a trained operative in the ways of psychic combat. He enters the worlds inside the minds of those around him and does battle with their inner demons using an array of psychic abilities. I refer you to the Zero Punctation review of Psychonauts which got me to play the game.

Genre: Text adventure
Photopia is almost more of an interactive short story than a game. It's written beautiful and sad. The narrative is nonlinear (even though the gameplay is totally linear) but makes perfect sense and the story blossoms like a flower at the end. I loved this game. It's short and free. There's no reason not to play it. Go, play now: http://www.wurb.com/if/game/255

Genre: Adventure
One of my favorite adventure games, second perhaps only to Grim Fandango. It's difficult to describe the plot of the game because it is a fantasy epic that takes place in a unique world. As far as older "cult" games, Gunstar Heroes is a fantastic co-op gaming experience on the Sega Genesis. You can probably emulate it on newer platforms. I know they made a sequel (Gunstar Superheroes) for the GBA or something, but it was not co-op and lacked a lot of the charm and fun of the original.

Basically a side-scrolling shoot-em-up where you can literally throw your partner at the enemies, and you can combine weapon types to come up with new and exciting wearpons (homing laser! double flamethrower!). It's a ton of fun if you can lay hands on it somehow. Not as exciting when played solo.

I pretty much agree with everything listed so far. Except for Stretch Panic, it's a strange game for sure, but it's not all that great. Lack on content, it's mostly boss fights so you really don't do anything that interesting in the game. It's something that could have been really cool, but was just meh instead.

My topic choice is Okami

It's out for the PS2 and it's coming to the Wii. You play the god Amaterasu in wolf form restoring the land and saving the village from the 8 headed dragon Orochi. The game play, at it's most basic is similar to Zelda. The gimmick in the game is you have a celestial brush which you can stop the action with for a moment and drawing symbols can cause gusts of wind or fire. These skills are also used to solve puzzles. For me I found the story charming but the real appeal to me what how the game looked. The style was done to look like old Japanese Brush paintings and they managed to make the whole game look like that and did it well.

And now that I'm home, smacking myself on the head for the Shin Megami Tensei games, whether you look into the survival horror Persona games or their RPGs, they're not cheerful by any means, but oh so very good. Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne was the first non-Persona to make it stateside(I believe) and starts off with the world blowing up and then being recreated as a home to demons of all sorts that you recruit as you progress(a bit of awesomely evil Pokemon, I suppose) until your final confrontation with God.

Just about any rougelike game should fall under cult status by default, my personal favorite has always been Nethack.

A quick followup on why everyone should play Shadow Hearts: In the second game one of your party members is a vampire wrestler/defender of justice that wields various large objects ranging from a locker to a submarine. I am a huge, huge gamer, so yay. Let's dig out the cult stuff:

Rainy Woods: This basically rips off Twin Peaks wholesale. You've got what appears to be the Black Lodge interior, a dead girl, a deadpan FBI agent, twins, midgets, lounge singers, etc. etc. etc. Lynch could probably sue over this, but whatever. If it's half as cool as the trailer makes it look, it'll be one of those things we have to get.

Cave Story: This is a PC sidescroller done in the style of NES games, but with far better music, about ten times the length, a full cast of characters, and a secret Hell level to make you want to kill yourself just when you think you've gotten good at it. If you've ever played the likes of Super Metroid, the Legend of Zelda, Super Mario World, etc. you should pick this up immediately and give it a whirl. Best part? It's completely free. Probably the best free game ever. Unless you count...

Knytt Stories: Another free game, Knytt Stories has a lot in common with Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. Again, 2D sidescroller, but the emphasis is on exploration and just taking in the very detailed world. The levels are huge and loaded with secrets, items, little hidden cinematics, and all kinds of cool crap. If you're the kind of person who loves the idea of videogames but doesn't find heavy action games or the like to be particularly appealing, definitely give this a shot. Doesn't cost anything, so what have you got to lose?

Sam and Max: Remember the old Lucasarts Point and Click adventure game, Sam and Max Hit the Road? Yep! Those guys. The games are being released as "seasons", kinda like a TV show. You can order a season subscription and play each hour/two hour-long installement as they come out, or just buy them individually for nine bucks each. The humor is excellent, the puzzles are old school, and anyone who enjoyed Monkey Island, The Dig, Full Throttle, Day of the Tentacle, Loom, or any of the other ones will be right at home here. Also, Episode 4 of season 1 is free so you can download that one and check it out if you want. You get to see Max's Max's presidential campaign speech and fight with a robotic Abe Lincoln for position in the polls!

Otogi: Probably the prettiest action game conceived by man. It's a japanese XBox game, which alone makes it a strange beast, but it's also probably the best japanese Xbox game. Not that there's a whole lot of competition, but hey. You play as a Japanese ghost warrior resurrected by some vaguely malevolent force to rid several ethereal areas of the demons that plague them. You really have to see the game in motion for it to work. It's stupidly pretty to look at, and the music is amazing. It also has a very floaty feel to it (befitting the whole supernatural angle) and pretty much everything in the game can be destroyed. By everything I really mean everything. You'll start on a level with an enormous temple in the center, several small houses, and maybe a bunch of stone statues, graves, and trees peppered about. ALL of this can be blown absolutely to hell and back. It's not uncommon to find a demon, beat them senseless with one of the bajillion weapons you get to play with, kick them through a fucking three story house (which then collapses beautifully), through the wall behind the house, and into the side of a mountain...Which you then blow up by summoning three huge dragons made of lightning that carve a massive hole in the earth. And that's like the second stage. There's a Sequel (creatively named Otogi II) that is every bit as good and gives you more characters to play with and even cooler stages to explode the shit out of. Good times.

Aaaaand that's all I got for now.

Yeah! Neverhood! The production values on that sucker were so good. Even the music. I went out and bought the freakin' soundtrack to that one. Didn't regret the purchase at all. Amazing kind of bluegrass-meets-beefheart thing going on there.

I'm not a platform owner but there have been some games - mentioned above - that have made me think yeah maybe i'd buy one just to play that. THis is a great list for enabling such an act.

A couple of games I can recommend:

flOw. You play this kind of floaty centipedy thing that drifts around in a kind of underwater environment and eats stuff. as you eat stuff your body changes. THere are some things that are bigger than you, and som that are smaller. It's kind of like running around in an ecosystem more than it is a game per se. THere's a version for PS3 and a free flash version.

Earthbound - this pretty much fulfils the definition of cult. It's an old NES game, one of those roleplayer/D&D kind of module things, but it's set in contemporary times, in a little village. You play a little boy who initially has to investigate a meteor crash, but as the game goes on there are more and more quests given to you. I can't really describe the storyline with any justice, but it's so endearingly sweet a game - you make little friends who help you on your way, and when you finally finish the game (no spoilers, don't worry) you get a chance to go back and visit all of the characters to say goodbye and thanks before ending the game. Your mother, father and sister are significant characters in the game - your mother looks after you and gives you dinner when your energy levels are down, your sister minds your stuff for you, and your dad (who only ever appears as a telephone) is essentially the save function, although he does also ring you occasionally if you've been playing hte game for a while, to recommend that you turnt he computer off and go outside to play.

Seriously, I was actually sad when I finished the game. I'd been playing it for six months or more and I'd really got to like the little guys.

It's always exciting to see games that step outside the box.

Lovecraft fans might be interested to know that there's a free mythos text adventure floating around on the net by the name of Anchorhead that is generally felt (at least in the interactive fiction community) to be the best Lovecraft game ever, and at least on par with Infocom. It can be had here: http://www.wurb.com/if/game/17

I guess, by definition, any text adventure could be considered a cult game, the audience for the things being so small.

A Twin Peaks game, huh? Xenogears and Chrono Trigger are both amazing games, though good like finding either. I'll agree with earlier comments, though, ignore their successors. Pretend they don't exist. Just not worth the time. Further retro-gaming advice (though you'll have to find an emulator for this, copies are impossible to find) is Secret of Mana, for the SNES. Loads of fun, great gameplay, and the most whimsical RPG I've ever played.

Some cult games that I enjoy are the Kingdom Hearts games. Done by SquareEnix (which can be either a point in their favor or against, depending on who you talk to), they are action/RPGs set in Disney Worlds. The plots are pretty well written, the worlds are faithfully (and particularly the first, gorgeously!) rendered, and the gameplay is a seamless blend of run-and-gun hectic-nes, and more traditional RPG menu-driven fare. The characters and themes can be a little cheesey, but if you can get past that, both are thoroughly enjoyable.

As for an under-recognized game.....Odin Sphere, release for the PS2 only a few short months ago. This is another action/RPG, but this time it is side-scrolling gameplay, with all the "levels" and menus placed in circles rather than lists. The visuals on this game are absolutely jaw-dropping. Done in an anime style, all the characters, NPCs, vendors, even the backgrounds seem to breathe life. Seriously, I can't say enough about it. As for plot, the game is split into five storylines (each divided into six or seven "chapters") that follow five different characters, all set in the same world at the same time. But don't be confused: certain key events change depending on which character your playing, sometimes affecting other characters, sometimes not. Sound is also very important, with a fully-scored soundtrack, and complete voice-overs, with the option(!) to have those voice-overs in English or the original Japanese. Considering that speech bubbles are also provided, I would personally recommend going with the Japanese, as the "sound" of the voices just suits the atmosphere much better.

It was like finding a snuff film. It felt like getting away with something which made it all the more thrilling, of course. It wasn't a good game at all but it made an impression. Oh yeah, going back to my days as a commodore 64 player, there were a couple of games that kept me going far beyond my interest in games. Zak McCracken and the Alien Mindbenders was the first LucasArts game I'd played that really worked for me. I'd played the Labyrinth film tie-in and Maniac Mansion, but there was something either two difficult or too unyielding about the game logic and I lost interest. To be honest it doesn't take much to make me lose interest in a game. My skillz are'nt mad and I'm not much for the repetititiveness that can result when someone with my low skill-level has to practise a scene over and over to get to the next one, and i'm pretty picky about the rewards I expect for the effort I have to put in. Zak worked within all of those arbitrary limits.

It was the sense of humour that got me. You play a tabloid journalist who gets assigned to cover reports of a killer two-headed squirrel, and the night before heading out he has this dream about aliens and a beautiful woman. So as the game goes along you uncover this alien conspiracy to use a giant ray gun to make everyone on earth stupider than the aliens so that they can take over the planet. Along the way you get to meet two girls who converted their VW van into a spaceship and went to the pyramids on mars, you get to possess various animals (including your own goldfish) and you get to make the most use of a pair of groucho marx nose-glasses that any world-saviour could expect.

It was the first game I'd played that had cutaway film sequences, and the first game I'd played that had a narrative structure. I was hooked.

Years later I found myself downloading a bunch of german techno remixes of the theme song and the nostalgia washed over me like surf.

And thanks heaps for all the game recommendations. As a mac user and an nonplatformowner I"m limited to what I can partake of, but it's a great list indeed. Looking forward to it continuing.

 @adamatsya

If you want good gaming without dropping a ridiculous amount on a console, I would heartily suggest a Nintendo DS. Tons of games, which debut at 20-25% less than a console game, and a huge back catalogue. Platformers, action, RPGs, puzzle games, strategy, even rhythm-based gaming, the DS has got it all. And some of the uses of the stylus for gameplay are just impressive, notably the new Zelda.

Don't get me wrong, the PSP is a good buy, and the firmware modding gives it a good deal more use, but out of the box, the DS just gives you more bang for your buck.

 @adamatsya

The two best computer pure puzzle games in existence: The Fool's Errand and 3 in Three are both Mac native. And they're also playable on Windows/Intel Macs with emulators. Get them here at their creator's website.

The Fool's Errand - Help the Fool unravel the enchantments placed on the Tarot-inspired fantasy landscape by the evil High Priestess, decipher the Sun's Map, and recover the Fourteen Lost Treasures of the Land. The interesting thing about this game is that as you solve each puzzle you reveal different pieces of the story scroll and the Sun's map. Once you've solved all the puzzles on the story scroll you get the complete story of the Fool's journey through the land but he hasn't won yet. You then have to solve the Sun's map and using it and what you've learned from the story to restore the treasures.

3 in Three - During a freak electric store a poor little 3 was knocked off her spreadsheet into the depths of the computer. Help guide her back to the spreadsheet through the internal landscape of the computer populated by dumb letters, arbitrary AIs, and malevolent irrational numbers. This game is also a metapuzzle like the one above (solving the individual puzzles gives you the clues to solve a larger puzzle), although the metapuzzle here isn't as pronounced as in Fool's Errand.

At the Carnival is also okay but it lacks the story of Fool's Errand and 3 in Three. Also its metapuzzle is the weakest of the three. But if you enjoy the puzzles in Fool's Errand and 3 in Three it's also worth a play through.

I haven't played Cliff's other games.

Oh Sweet Jesus Ys I & II how did I forget that?

Ys VI for PlayStation 2 was pretty fun, though not nearly as amazing as the earlier stuff.
You just described several seminal years of my childhood. What a great game. The old cinemaware games were all pretty amazing (at the time). If I were more internet-savvy I'd tell you exactly where to download an emulator and all those classic games as freeware.
Could you ever beat the game? I don't know if it was even possible to get a non-ants-just-took-over-the-globe-because-you-couldn't-figure-out-how-to-use-the-grenades-properly ending. I use Magic Engine for my TG-16 gaming these days, and ROMs seem to be plentiful all over the place.

Magic Engine
Shadow of the colossus is ART. Amazing graphics with gameplay to match, which seems awfully rare these days.

Shadow of the Collossus was mesmerizing.
I've played adventure games where i just wandered about to explore and see what i could find or sidequests or what not, but I've never played one just to roam and be mesmerized by the scenery.
Such as when i entered the southern entrance to the cavern lair of the sandworm collossus and saw the spectacular and mountainous dead tree perched above the mouth of the cave.

Chrono Trigger...wow, i remember that. Loved it. Even though it was visually attractive, i still thought Chrono Cross was disappointing for such a long-awaited follow-up.

My recommendation : Fatal Frame on PS2.
brief and old video clip of the game here
I've never been a big fan of horror video games because i don't find them that scary i guess. I mostly hate first-person shooters with two notable exceptions and they're in Second Life. Resident Evil bored me. Silent Hill was neat thanks to the disorienting fog and crackling radio. Fatal Frame is the one and only game that has ever chilled me to the bone. It was a very unique FPS because it relied upon a mystical camera and proximity. Via photograph, the camera absorbs the essence of spirits and demons at a haunted Japanese mansion as you search to discover what happened to your brother (the character in the film and played briefly in black/white at the games beginning). I highly recommend it if you enjoy a good scare.

Either way, I'd want to mention that.

Mischief Makers as well. Not groundbreaking, but a decent sidescroller made by Treasure for Nintendo.

Killer 7, of course. The story and cutscenes make the game worthwhile, for me. The gameplay itself isn't amazing, but I found it decent enough.

Here's a question, though. Would Street Fighter III be considered a cult game? Yes, it's Street Fighter, but it wasn't as popular or liked, unless I'm mistaken. Either way, I liked it. Third Strike, anyway.

I skimmed through this a bit and I figured I should emphasize a few mentioned ones.

Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne (PS2):
Its like a demonic Pokemon where you beat up God and Lucifer at the end. Big world, lots of myths from around the world put into it. Yeah its an RPG and not as character driven as most RPG's but still very good.

Shin Megami Tensei Digital Devil Saga (PS2)
Its about demonic cannibals. No lie. You turn into demons and eat each other. Character driven story with better voice acting than I'm used to in a video game. For anime fans, the English guy who does Spike from Cowboy Bebop plays the character Gale. That's not the reason to play the game. The first sentence is the reason to play the game.

Shin Megami Tensei Persona 3 (PS2)
This is the game for anime fans. Its half Japanese high school simulator, half go fight demons in a dungeon. J-pop oriented soundtrack with anime cut scenes. Oh and you summon your Persona (demon familiar type creature) by shooting yourself in the head.

Xenogears PS1
Great story, incredibly long, not so great gameplay. Some side stories are contrived but what other game has people mutate into the organs of God? Some would call that a spoiler, I call that a you won't know what the hell I'm talking about until waaaaaaaaaaaaay late in the game. The game deals with a lot of religion ideas from Eastern and Western cultures. Play through the entire intro of the game and then try and tell me you're not hooked. The way you know you're through the intro is when Fei gets his emo-baggage.

Chronotrigger SNES/PS1
Classic. Great characters, fun story, entertaining gameplay for its time, with lots of reason to replay it again and again. The characters are so well treated in this its hard not to fall in love with them.

Metal Saga PS2
What other console RPG offers the intention of absolutely no plot line and enemies that are giant men's legs in panty hose that lead into missile turrets (I believe they're called crotch rockets)?

Katamari Damacy PS2, PSP, Wii
Roll the world into a giant ball while listening to a japanese techno renditions of Sinatra and classic jazz hits.

ICO and Shadow of the Colossus were already given heavy mention so that is all I will write.

Actually I could probably keep going but I'll stop right there.

Oh, and Taz and Yarz Revenge on Atari.
I skipped alot of the nintendo games as a kid, besides mario, because my parents were too cheap to get me one..I got a super nintendo in highschool...King of the Monsters was an awesome very animesque monsterfighting game that my brother and I rented every few weeks and beat within a few hours.
I then got my PSX. Red Asphalt. It's the remake of the old Super Nintendo game Rock' n' Roll Racing...red asphalt has futuristic weapons and defensive weapons enhanced supercars that race on about five or six different planets. You can buy about six or seven different cars with different upgrades, and the game even has CG commercials for each of the cars. Normally I don't go for racing games because they were too bland...this one was visually stunning for a game of it's day, and had really good music, excitingly destructive futuristic weapons and difficult tracks with multiple paths at times...
Then there was Legacy of Kain...All the games except for Blood Omen 2 kick ass...the story is one of the best, and it's inspired me on a number of creative occasions. Silent Hill...I'm a big silent hill fan....I've never played them though...I suck and am a Wuss...but, I made my husband play them, and watched through all of em. I absolutely love the textures and psychological elements to them.
IF you want to waste about a month of your life and not care at all, play the new Wii Sims game...it'd ideal entertainment when you want to play a videogame but are too enebriated to play anything where you can actually fail...

Razeal is a pretty damned good character himself...I'd have to say Defiance was the best of the lot. Oh shit, how could I forget. God of War and God of War 2
It's very cinematic and fun as hell to play. My only bitch was that in the first one, the very first puzzle, which was the box puzzle, where you have to slide a box past shit tons of archers without them breaking your box. That puzzle pissed me off...and the timed puzzles...I've never been a big fan of timed puzzles. I could do them, but they irritated me...then they went and made every puzzle in god of war 2 a timed puzzle...bleh...but other than that, they were awesome games. I ended up taking a Kratos figure and set up a Undertaker (yes...the old WWF deadman) Vs. Kratos match on my shop's counter.
OH, speaking of wrestling. Rumble Roses. That is a fun game, full of eye candy and awesome wrestling action...

Perhaps I'm still fond of it because it was made by an Australian company, but I have nothing but positive memories from playing the game.

It's a sci-fi RTS that came out in 1997 but managed to have enough of it's own personality and flavour to set itself apart from the hordes of Command & Conquer clones.

Not sure how it would like Windows XP, but if you like RTSs and don't mind old-school graphics I couldn't recommend it enough.

Speaking of Deus Ex, there is a new one in the works! While the teaser trailer is not all that interesting upon first glance (in fact, I find the narrator a little annoying), closer analysis reveals some surprisingly interesting stuff:

...So, assuming none of these details are by accident, one could derive the possibility that this game will be a prequel to the original DX, set in the late 2020s, and will possibly focus more on origin of mech-augmented agents (like Gunther and Anna Navarre from DX1) -- and, in particular, one named "Emile." Also, according to this, in terms of gameplay there will be a focus on replayability.

Here's to hoping it doesn't bomb like DX: Invisible War... I enjoyed IW for what it was worth, but it certainly didn't live up to the original.

Some of my own contrbutions as a mega gamer geek.

Summoner (1&2) (PS2) - An adventure quest-like game. There is fighting, but the story is of utter importance. And unike most games you don't control jsut a single character, but a group. Both games are absolutely amazing and I wish there was a third one. One of the best RPGs ever.

Primal (PS2) - More along the RPG platform style, but still very good. Again a good story and very fun to play.

Grandia 2 (PS2) - An RPG along the same kind of lines as Final Fantasy. Nothing terribly new here except a good story and the best combat system on the face of the planet. I don't know hwo to describe it other than by saying it is a cross between initiative based and turn based.

P.N.03 (Gamecube) - Not a lot of story here, but what there is s interesting. Very sci-fi based. The thing about this game is that it's pretty much a 3D platform game with a special amount of style. The music in this game is beyond great and it intergral to the game. You movements flow to the music. Timing and movement fits into the movement. I don't know how to explain why it's wonderful, it jsut is.

Eternal Darkness is the reason I bought a Gamecube. A friend of mine works for Silicon Knights and woked on the game. So because of her I needed to get the GC. I wasn't disappointed and Eternal Darkness is one y very favourite games.

Grim Fandango is worth playing over and over. They really broke the mold with it and it just makes you want to play it. I love it.

In the original the Augmentations you chose seemed to make a real difference to the way you had to play the game. I can still remember a couple of parts of the game that were easier and harder (respectively) because of Augmentation choices I made.

DE was more difficult, but still never frustrating, and the story was perfectly created and completely enthralling. In IW it seems a little hashed together and ridiculous.
Though they got big bonus points from me for having Kidney Thieves music throughout the game.

DE is pretty old now, so you wouldn't need a fancy PC to play it, and I'd definitely recommend it. I'm not sure what console you do have, but the other option is to hope that it gets released as an Xbox Live Arcade download prior to the release of DE3... Oh yes, more Gamecube love, Gotcha Force:

Capsule toy-sized Virtual On on crack, combined with Pokemon. As you can see from the video, everything from cowboys and ninjas to giant (combining!) robots and transforming heroes to space cruisers and pop idols, just about anything a Japanese otaku might love, shrunk down to 3-4 inch tall alien "borgs" battling to the death to defeat the evil overlord. Don't let the kiddy appearance put you off either, it is fast and furious gameplay that truly offers an insane number of ways to play, for instance I'm often running around with a mix of defensive and super-offensive borgs, but I've also got a team that is, literally, 5 guided nukes for use against small-count enemies. The only downside to the game is the horrendous dub that we got and no option for a Japanese language track. Well, that and the lack of pirates, but given that it's coming from the land of the ninja, its understandable.

As to the Pokemon factor- Capsule toys are a huge otaku collectable in Japan and their distribution is just as insane here- as you fight, you win more of them, and then you discover your first variant version and all of a sudden you want more variants, and then you discover even rarer clear variants, and silver, and gold, and black! And then there's the ones where you need to collect multiple pieces to get because they're just too awesome! And finding the right variants of those! Trading helps of course(if you can find someone else with it!), but it'll keep you playing forever trying to get anywhere near a complete collection, making it a good thing that the gameplay is very fun.
