    Totally Rad- i discovered this game after staying up all night drinking and making bad choices. ten minutes of sleep+ some schwaggy smoke+it being 8 oclock in the fucking morning="dude, this game is amazing!"

    I would have to agree with Deus Ex. Too bad the sequel wasn't as strong as the original. Still fun, but a little hollow, and a bit simpler.

    I would like to add to the list Dark Reign. Perhaps I'm still fond of it because it was made by an Australian company, but I have nothing but positive memories from playing the game.

    It's a sci-fi RTS that came out in 1997 but managed to have enough of it's own personality and flavour to set itself apart from the hordes of Command & Conquer clones.

    Not sure how it would like Windows XP, but if you like RTSs and don't mind old-school graphics I couldn't recommend it enough.

    Speaking of Deus Ex, there is a new one in the works! While the teaser trailer is not all that interesting upon first glance (in fact, I find the narrator a little annoying), closer analysis reveals some surprisingly interesting stuff:





    ...So, assuming none of these details are by accident, one could derive the possibility that this game will be a prequel to the original DX, set in the late 2020s, and will possibly focus more on origin of mech-augmented agents (like Gunther and Anna Navarre from DX1) -- and, in particular, one named "Emile." Also, according to this, in terms of gameplay there will be a focus on replayability.

    Here's to hoping it doesn't bomb like DX: Invisible War... I enjoyed IW for what it was worth, but it certainly didn't live up to the original.

    Also, Uplink and Introversion's other games deserve to be mentioned here.

    aduckworth, I was going to say that I love you for posting that, but then I saw that the game is at least 2 years away, so instead I hate you for making me wait so long...

    Seriously though, that's awesome. Yeah, here's hoping it's more like DE than IW.

    i liked de:iw, but i never had the chance to play the original (not a pc gamer, will not own a ps2) so i don't know how it stacks up.

    Some of my own contrbutions as a mega gamer geek.

    Summoner (1&2) (PS2) - An adventure quest-like game. There is fighting, but the story is of utter importance. And unike most games you don't control jsut a single character, but a group. Both games are absolutely amazing and I wish there was a third one. One of the best RPGs ever.

    Primal (PS2) - More along the RPG platform style, but still very good. Again a good story and very fun to play.

    Grandia 2 (PS2) - An RPG along the same kind of lines as Final Fantasy. Nothing terribly new here except a good story and the best combat system on the face of the planet. I don't know hwo to describe it other than by saying it is a cross between initiative based and turn based.

    P.N.03 (Gamecube) - Not a lot of story here, but what there is s interesting. Very sci-fi based. The thing about this game is that it's pretty much a 3D platform game with a special amount of style. The music in this game is beyond great and it intergral to the game. You movements flow to the music. Timing and movement fits into the movement. I don't know how to explain why it's wonderful, it jsut is.

    Eternal Darkness is the reason I bought a Gamecube. A friend of mine works for Silicon Knights and woked on the game. So because of her I needed to get the GC. I wasn't disappointed and Eternal Darkness is one y very favourite games.

    Grim Fandango is worth playing over and over. They really broke the mold with it and it just makes you want to play it. I love it.

    Oh yeah, lots of love for Metal Saga! Atlus just seems to have some type of uni-employee mind sense because practically of their games (or rather games they import) are fantastic!

    I'm ashamed for not remembering Eternal Darkness. The insanity meter or whatever its called is one of the best video game mechanics I've seen in a long time. "Wait, what? Why did my guy just get cut and half and start screaming? Oh wait, he's too insane right now. I'll wait. Hope there's nothing in here with me".

    DE:IW just felt too simple compared to the original. In the original the Augmentations you chose seemed to make a real difference to the way you had to play the game. I can still remember a couple of parts of the game that were easier and harder (respectively) because of Augmentation choices I made.

    DE was more difficult, but still never frustrating, and the story was perfectly created and completely enthralling. In IW it seems a little hashed together and ridiculous.
    Though they got big bonus points from me for having Kidney Thieves music throughout the game.

    DE is pretty old now, so you wouldn't need a fancy PC to play it, and I'd definitely recommend it. I'm not sure what console you do have, but the other option is to hope that it gets released as an Xbox Live Arcade download prior to the release of DE3... I'd sure as hell buy it (again) for the privilege.

    Oh yes, more Gamecube love, Gotcha Force:



    Capsule toy-sized Virtual On on crack, combined with Pokemon. As you can see from the video, everything from cowboys and ninjas to giant (combining!) robots and transforming heroes to space cruisers and pop idols, just about anything a Japanese otaku might love, shrunk down to 3-4 inch tall alien "borgs" battling to the death to defeat the evil overlord. Don't let the kiddy appearance put you off either, it is fast and furious gameplay that truly offers an insane number of ways to play, for instance I'm often running around with a mix of defensive and super-offensive borgs, but I've also got a team that is, literally, 5 guided nukes for use against small-count enemies. The only downside to the game is the horrendous dub that we got and no option for a Japanese language track. Well, that and the lack of pirates, but given that it's coming from the land of the ninja, its understandable.

    As to the Pokemon factor- Capsule toys are a huge otaku collectable in Japan and their distribution is just as insane here- as you fight, you win more of them, and then you discover your first variant version and all of a sudden you want more variants, and then you discover even rarer clear variants, and silver, and gold, and black! And then there's the ones where you need to collect multiple pieces to get because they're just too awesome! And finding the right variants of those! Trading helps of course(if you can find someone else with it!), but it'll keep you playing forever trying to get anywhere near a complete collection, making it a good thing that the gameplay is very fun.

    the sheer level of sadness in those games. addictive, addictive sadness...

    side note: if you want to see what Silent Hill is like before trying the games, DON'T watch the movie of that name. watch a movie called "Session 9."

    Dungeon Keeper, anyone?

    I hold a very special, slimy, place in my heart for X-Com. 3D games are still trying to catch up to basically every part of it. TFTD was fine, and all, but Enemy Unknown (UFO Defense in the states) is just brilliant fun. Nothing quite like it.

    Ballerburg is also one I remember playing a lot in the depths of my memory.

    @ralf Dune 1 was also an awesome...adventure/strategy game! Really the only one if its kind that I can think of.
