The impression I got from the look on Mark's face when Kait flayed his blade wasn't so much shock and dismay. It seemed more like a 'I didn't expect her to do THAT to it' reaction. I mean, she could have just plain bent it, or rolled it up like a measuring tape, after all.

( I may be giving insane props to Paul's artwork with this - but it's not undue props, so... )

I'm also fairly certain he would have detected her getting ready to do SOMETHING just then, but maybe the 'interference' he's putting up hindered him? Point being, I think the sword was a distraction. I'm fairly confident that it's considered canon now that Mark is/was supposed to be able to hold his own against any of the others in a mano-a-mano situation.

"Here. Play with the nice shiny while I sneak in your head and flip a few switches about."

Warren, I have a question: is the power of the package determined by the intelligence of the wielder? It's been mentioned a few times I think that Mark and Luke were the brightest of the twelve, and also the most dangerous.

( Also - does it look to anyone else like Mark lost all/most of his teeth?!? )
  1.  (7703.22)
That's a beautiful bit of work on that sword :)

Btw does anyone know what they're refering to when he mentions "Something Luke said to me, something about the weather" as I can't find the reference?
  2.  (7703.23)
@Berserker -- I've been speculating along similar lines. Most mathematicians I know are at least as loopy as Arkady, and often as cynical as Luke. Or perhaps the package is equal, but focused in different ways by the wielder's personality?
  3.  (7703.24)
@invisible_al -- When Luke is chained to the wall he suggests that they could be capable of more than they are doing with their powers, including weather control. Obviously I'm paraphrasing because I'm too lazy to look it up myself. :)
  4.  (7703.25)
okay, I'm not too lazy. Episode 66 67, page 3. (Thanks dddrum for the correction)
  5.  (7703.26)
    but...but...WHAT ABOUT ARKADY?

Mark is a very interesting character, I'm looking forward to seeing more of him. I love what Kait did with the sword and how she doesn't find Mark suddenly reappearing with a samurai sword (hers, correct? so someone got into her headquarters and stole it from her?) remotely frightening.

I don't think the weather thing is going to go well...and Alice...well, she was never my favorite but I'll be sad to see her go if she does, but really she kind of has to be in the story for balance and to bring a "human" side to things. I think she's too necessary to kill off. I may be eating crow in a couple of weeks, who knows?

I have almost defeated Teh Sickness and am avoiding opening my agenda book.

ps- Where is Sirkka during all this? and Jack?

Heh. Peel the lamination right off the sword. What a lovely little bit of science and art. Thanks.

All things being equal, the more intelligent FA's would be the most powerful. They'd see ways to leverage their power in effective ways, and just plain see things to do that wouldn't occur to others. But that doesn't require that their intelligence be measured by traditional standards.

More importantly in this installment. I'm thinking Alice just might catch her target completely off-guard. the time between the sound of the shot and it's impact won't be enough to warn him, but the distance just might be great enough that unless that shotgun is loaded with a slug, it may just cause him a great deal of pain and cosmetic damage. A pissed off FA is a dangerous thing.

This installment just made my day! This is going to get messy, and I can't (or won't) look away!

I love you Warren, I love you Paul, and I love the two colorists. Reading Freakangels makes me feel like there is a god! Even my little sister has been impressed with the art, and she actually knows some of the techniques the colorists used.

It's going to be a great day! (and it's raining where I am, so...; P

Yesss! Finally friday! Ah man, the weeks are gonna drag on waiting for these to come out haha...

I suppose it's not a big deal for Kait to dismantle a sword, being the weapons-nut. Unraveling the blade though, that's style ;P. Shoulda got a Hattori Hanzo.

Well, shoot. I already can't wait for next friday. . . Time to pick up my check and commence the usual friday rituals.

I'm having a time out until I can learn some manners.
    Hi, question for Paul:

On page five where Kait dismantles Mark's sword, what exactly is happening to the blade? I know you research things meticulously, so I was wondering why is the blade separating out into all those thin slithers of metal? Does it have something to do with how a samurai sword is made... I can see how the lace in the handle would come undone, but the blade itself is something of a mystery to me.

So, after weeks of that long flashback, we've got 4 separate arenas of action all happening at once (including KK and Arkady still out in the Thames from last week). Cool.

Speaking of weather . . . We're in the initial stages of getting 2 feet of snow here in the DC metro area. Two freakin feet. Luckily I've got a lot of reading waiting for me on my night stand.

    @Dee_Noir,
Katanas are made by folding a sheet of iron into tons of layers, then smelting it all together. So basically Kait unsmithed a katana. Fuck yeah!

Seeing the last panel just made me think, what exactly does it take to kill one of the Freakangels?

"All things being equal, the more intelligent FA's would be the most powerful."

heart, we seem to have forgotten heart.

Excellent pay-off here. I was dreading a skip week.

Mark appears to have lost it. Not in a cutely eccentric Arkady style either. Dangerous clear-eyed madman, someone who has SEEN THINGS iyswim. I really hope we get some more backstory to see what happened to that sere youngster with the big ideas.

Tinfoil hat man pulling weather control out of his sleeve? excellent. moar pls and quickly. Make it bi-weekly and I will buy one whole FA branded bag.

Hello there! Infrequent commenter, but weekly reader here. Enjoying awesome sunny California weather till tomorrow, when we're supposed to get some inches of rain.

Thanks for bringing back Action Alice. Despite her lack of purple eyes and abilities, she's an awesome character with a good heart and a no-nonsense attitude. I hope she didn't miss. I wonder what's going to happen to the other bullet, though?

Kait's an old hat at hiding herself from the other FA's. So the trick that Mark's been doing may very well be something she knows how to work around, or perhaps detect. It's great to see them fighting one-on-one against each other.

@fearlessnaked - Nice find, but it's on page 3 of episode 67. You may have accidentally referenced the back-to-previous-ep button at the bottom of the page (which I catch myself doing all the time, arrgh).
