It's interesting.
I enjoyed the ?journal/letter pages? with their diagrams and how they contrast with the main comic pages, and offer not just a different viewpoint but also different visual style. Font for that section is a bit large, IMHO, but after reading crud in a times size 10, I think my eyes needed a break anyway.

I don't feel hooked, though, and the dark red backgrounds on some pages I find really, really distracts me from the rest of the art -- and I feel like it clashes an itty bit with the lighter highlights on the cover's blue border and seems to be fighting with a lot of the blues when they appear on the page. I keep on finding myself staring at the red areas and following those lines like an utter idiot and having to force my mind to go from the background to the actual images, and I feel sorta bad for not really finding the comic to my taste so far, because it has a lot of the elements of things I like.

I don't hate it, but it just doesn't feel like a "must have" to me.

I'm totally hooked on this one. The dawn of police combined with alternate history combined with steampunk? Oh hell yes!

Love the art, too. Raulo Caceres put in some amazing linework, and possibly because I read it in very good lighting the dark colors didn't obscure a bit of detail. It's always fun when a book is slow reading because I keep getting distracted by the intricate art.

Very enthusiastic for this one. More please!

Beautiful artwork... kind of reminds me of the old EC artists.

I liked the large text pages, they were different. I think a smaller text would have been lost on the page, and the larger text (beautiful font by the way) made it so that they were short sentences that got to the point.

And I'm with James up there when he talks about the dark colours not obscuring the details. Usually I don't like a lot of dark colours in comics because it so often hides what I want to actually see.

kind of reminds me of the old EC artists.

That's exactly what I thought when I saw Charlie in the second panel on page four. I'm a bit of an EC nerd, so that definitely made me happy, right off the bat.

I picked up this book in the shop to look at it and decide if I would read it. I saw Swing holding a beaten man in uniform and thought it looked great. Nearly convinced I, for some reason, flipped to the last page.

"FUCK THE LAW!"

Yup, I thought, looks like I'll be buying four issues of this!

I'm pretty excited for the next three issues. It feeds the hunger for a new issue of Dok, quite nicely, though nothing could ever truly replace that.

Steam engenius. (Not my word. It belongs to Isaac Brock as far as I know.)

The timing of the release is impeccable. End of "Crossed" is the beginning of "Captain Swing."

Normally, when I read a comic for the first time I focus on the story. I loved the pages of text, and I wish them to continue. However I found myself focusing on each panel on my first run. I am not familiar with Raulo's work, but it is engaging. The chops are magnificent. I believe I took in the locks on the last page for several minutes. This is new to me.

Man, that guy REALLY dislikes authority. I'm sure it's going to be a great story. It's already rife with historical bents and supressive agents. Four issues? I hope there is a meaningful conclusion.

Heyhey! I was hoping something like this would show up. Hang on...

Dee-SPISE the title, and I'm a big fan of, uh, "mouthfuls." (Boy, that could be misconstrued.) Seriously, I'm very fond of long chains of words tumbling like an ornate puzzle that elicit "What the fuck could this story POSSIBLY be about," but come on—"Captain SWING and the (you know the rest)"? Jesus. Sounds like a fake Don Ho album that would show up in a SIMPSONS bit. Or WAYNE'S WORLD, "Captain SCHWIING! Haha har..." Moving on.

Cheers to the Chief Mechanic. Love the full page expository bits w/ groovy period illustrations. And jumping ahead to the last one ending with, "I am Captain Swing." Very cool.

Not insanely nuts about the art. Nothing wrong with it, and I suppose it's "appropriate," question mark. But it's just so heavy and dark. If I were feeling uncharitable, I might describe it as "overworked," but it's not, it's fine. It's just not my thing.

OK, the story (shit, duty calls, I have to go) THE STORY: I dug it. Will be there for all four issues. Kind of hard not to like a story that ends chap one with "Fuck the law!" Good stuff, Internet Jesus.

every time I read a book like this, and most of those are by Ellis, I always start to wonder how possible/probably all this psuedo-science really is. I know Tesla did things that were astounding, only to have it lost to profit mongers, I wonder how many other good ides got lost to the bastards w/ 12 figure bank accounts.

Thank You Warren, for exciting my imagination....as always!

BIG fan of Spring-Heeled Jack and the stories surrounding him. Always good to read Warren's historical notes, seamlessly blended in with the fiction. I enjoyed it immensely and can't wait for #2. It's four issues, yes?

Now, if we could only <del >get a new issue of Desolation Jones...</del>

I liked this first issue a lot -- Finally someone's doing a good Springheeled Jack story. One question, though -- was the last line a deliberate hat-tip to Patrick O'Brian's Post Captain or just synchronicity? I was listening to that audiobook the night before I read the issue, and it stuck in my head.

Good lord, I just came upon this title yesterday, and I am SMITTEN.
My wife and I played Scrabble last night, and I drove her crazy with random and often unfounded exclamations of "FUCK THE LAW."

No idea what drew me to look on the bottom of the swivel rack at my local shop. Glad I did.

I can't wait for issue #2. I'm loving the prose segments intermittently included. They are somehow able to both ground and expand on the overall outrageousness of the concept. Which I friggin' love. Having a casual interest with Spring Heeled Jack, I'm fascinated with the other legends that have been worked in here that I'm not at all familiar with. Can't wait to see where this goes.

I like it when a comic's promos are actually like what you find in the comic. With CS I felt like I got what I was expecting. Only written magnificently and drawn in a very symbiotic way. It exceeded my expectations and left me wanting more. The writing, characters, art and color all gave me a great sense of the grunge and the unpolished nature of the time. This was also present in the spring heels' (the actual heels, not the man) construction and other electric contraptions. All this contrasted nicely with the delicate nature of the glass bullets (my favorite part), and the elegance of The Captain himself. Dug the history lesson, thought it enhanced the comic nicely, not just a stunt of sorts.

High expectations. totally sucked in. No idea how this can be a 4 issue arc. Wishing I hadn't left it at work so I could read again right now!

Just re-read Captain Swing this morning over breakfast. I really enjoyed it. I love the art thought it was beautiful. I have a weakness for all things steampunk so this was right up my alley. While I really enjoyed most of the back and forth dialog, found it really engaging, I thought "The future is whatever in this world I have decided not to kill" line came off as a bit cheesy. All that was redeemed however by "Fuck the Law!" I'm hooked, and on board for the next 3 issues.
