No pen-portraits. This is ART ONLY. Posting just a bunch of text, or a scribble and a vast number of words, will get the thread closed and your account banned.

NO MORE PHOTO-MANIPULATION "art". I'll just delete them. People have been drenching recent threads with several pieces at a time that they've knocked out in photoshop in 2 minutes with no thought at all. I consider this to be taking the piss now.

No more than TWO submissions by any one person in any one REMAKE/REMODEL.

So here's the deal:

You are an artist/designer. You have to put together the cover for a comic called SUPERMAN. It is issue 1 of this book.

You have been told that Superman is a man who dresses predominantly in a shade of blue, and wears a red S symbol. You know nothing else about the character.

The cover must include a logo and the text THE COMPLETE STORY OF THE DARING EXPLOITS OF THE ONE AND ONLY SUPERMAN.

And that's it.

It's up to you what kind of company you're at. What kind of comics you make. How you translate that description of Superman. What era you're in. Who you are, even. Go nuts with it.

You have one week. Go.

Loved everything so far. Oddly inspiring also, as if Seigel and Shuster's raw original idea has actual visible legs again. Not saying the idea lost its legs somewhere along the road, just that I've not been able to see them since I were a young'un. Would it be okay to take photos ourselves and do minimal manipulation (touch ups and text-adding, say) and post that? That way it wouldn't be taking other people's content, but actually going on a photoshoot with this in mind. If it's not okay, that's cool, as I might just take the photos anyways. As far as I'm concerned, I must say that I really love the covers done by Art, Paul or Sobreiro. I also like Muller's cover even if it's very scary (maybe because of that) but my favorite one has been painted by jamesmith3. That's a really pretty cover. I don't now why you think is predictable at all even if it could seem more classic, like mine.

@Paul Sizer - A little bit different, yes. I normally preserve the lineart in one layer and apply the colors behind but this time I painted right on top of It.

@JSM: Don't take it personally; most of the regulars here have been posting work here for the last couple of years, and know what each other's strengths are and what they want to work on, hence why they comment on each other's work; it's an ongoing critique process. It took me a few months to start feeling confident to go toe to toe with some of the high-grade talent that frequents these forums.

This is the first we've seen of your work, and while you are encouraged to keep submitting, there's bound to be some "in the trenches" time for you (and any of the new posters) while we see how you work across a few weeks and a few more submissions. That's not meant to be exclusive of new people, but in any forum, people take a while to warm up to the new folks. Just like in real meat-space (to borrow an Ellis-ism).

I'm especially impressed with some of the ones that use typography (which I love) and abstract design (gushiguera, like many of the others, made me shiver).

And thanks to the artists who are learning the craft. I know what it's like to throw your work out there, so good on you for participating.

I've never found Superman to be that interesting a character, but these re-imagings make me wish DC would let some of these stories be written. The idea of stripping down the character (foreigner, invincible, wears an S somewhere) and turning a bunch of people loose on it sounds fascinating and exciting.

@nanageddon: Love the typography--Did you design the SUPERMAN letters from scratch? Also, cool color variants. I particularly like the fact that the second one has a kind of 80's color scheme, but still looks modern and fresh. Excellent work!

Just to prove that I lack proper design skills, I realize now that the image is done that the logo kinda messes up the picture. I should've moved it a bit more towards the horizontal center of the image, and made it less slanted, among other stuff. Oh well!
