I'm developing a creative project with an artist collaborator that we intend to make initially known through online contact. We want to make the most of the net's capacity to circulate digital images, and instead make our money on merchandise and other spin-offs. The details of our project are less important than what we can learn from those who are already succeeding by thinking differently about the economics of creativity. I've blogged about just that today, and would appreciate the chance for people to share more examples with me here.

I dunno, you may wanna talk to the fella that does xkcd - if anyone has the widest circulation of images in front of eyes on the net, it's arguably him. As for making money not on the particular shard of content you provide, I'd think you'd wanna start with something akin to Corporate Identity. Something the kids can glom onto as a recognizable badge of Cool, like having a Transmet three-eyed smiley face sticker on your laptop. We get it, but not everybody gets it. It's that spirit of elitism that feeds the tastemaking machines. Be Identifiable but not Blatant in the Constructed Identity.

Now I'm gonna go have a Coke and a smile....

Thanks for the xkcd link. Our project is a kind of Tintin meets Rugrats in space thing for 8-12 year olds. It's very much come from a desire to do something creative with a longtime collaborator, and everyone who's seen it loves it. I recently met someone who has 30 or so years experience in animation in America and the UK, and he has offered to spend some time with us -- we're also eager to learn about multi platform opportunities, to realise it in game form, and with toys etc. Am keen to attend this course with a producer hat on, and then there are trade fairs and other events to consider...
