This one is vastly more difficult than last week's, I think.

Usual REMAKE/REMODEL rules apply:

No pen-portraits. This is ART ONLY. Posting just a bunch of text, or a scribble and a vast number of words, will get the thread closed and your account banned.

NO MORE PHOTO-MANIPULATION "art". I'll just delete them. People have been drenching recent threads with several pieces at a time that they've knocked out in photoshop in 2 minutes with no thought at all. I consider this to be taking the piss now.

No more than TWO submissions by any one person in any one REMAKE/REMODEL.

So here's the deal:

You are an artist/designer. You have to put together the cover for the first issue of a weekly science-fiction anthology comic called 2000AD.

You don't know much about what's in it. You've been given the following pieces of information to include on the cover somehow:

"featuring the new DAN DARE"

"M.A.C.H. 1 - his incredible hyperpower will amaze you!"

"SPACE-AGE DINOSAURS! Read 'FLESH' "

"STOP PRESS! GREAT BRITAIN INVADED!"

Without the "", obviously. Your choice as to how you use these -- whether you relegate them all to text at the bottom, or choose one to illustrate, or whatever.

The cover must include a logo and the numbering, which you've been told is not the usual "issue one," but "Programme 1."

And that's it.

It's up to you what kind of company you're at. What kind of comics you make. What era you're in. Who you are, even. Go nuts with it.

(Obviously, there was a time when 2000 AD was The Future. So, you tell me. Is this a retro-sf comic? Or are you in the late 19th century and publishing it on punch cards? Is it the Seventies and are you Roger Dean? Or Jamie Reid?)

It sort of mirrors the truth of 2000AD Prog 1, which was that it didn't strictly speaking have a cover illustration, as a massive frisbee was mounted on the front cover as a free gift.

I don't know what Unchronal means exactly but I imagine the Chinese whispers part refers to the fact that you have to adapt a cover out of Warren's description. more diluted as the info gets passed along.

So, the whole thing could be treated as a themed Sci-fi anthology set in an alternate history (like 'Ministry of Space' and 'Ignition City'). The Twentieth Century. It's such a beautiful notion: to rethink the years leading up to the millennium with the benefit of hindsight, especially with the 80s and 90s so rarely featuring in the Alternate History genre.

And it was before the unnecessary combination of buildings and planes that changed the world and set the tone for (arguably) the first half of the Twenty-first Century.

So: concept's there for the taking.

My approach to this was to just do the typographic design, and assume that my publisher would be providing me with other people's artwork to use in the cover, hence why I've made use of existing art for this cover. Hope that's OK for this "experiment".

I went for an 80's vibe (what if 2000ad was launched in 82?)
sort of 2000ad crossed with the New Eagle, great great grandson
of Dan Dare and all! Hand drawn B/W line work scanned in, coloured in
Photoshop, and worked on to give the 'printed on bog roll' feel...

@JSween - Yeah, when I saw all the blurb that went with this weeks R/R I nearly wet myself. I think I've learned from this that the key to lettering by hand is to try and make it LOOK like that's what you're doing. ( and to buy better pens... )

Everyone should be congratulated for their work and effort, but heres my tuppence on the ones that caught my eye...

STYLE/DESIGN
Some caught my eye with their distinct design and lettering. The best of these were FrenchBloke, Ken Miller, Paul Sizer (mate seriously, why has none of the big boys come knocking at your door?), and Fernando Lucas (for those lovely designed alien soldiers with the Tommy helmets and bayonets). My Faovurite of all of these though was the cover produced by 256. It´s just grabs me on so many levels and i would buy that no matter what.

RETRO
Several have gone for the "Retro-future" look. The best of These i thought were Spedwig and Philv for the use of lettering, colour and layout. Well done

I´m also mentioning Mister Anderson´s design as there´s something rather unsettling about that bloody "ring" logo that give me all sorts of bad connotations (but in a good way!).

There's some clean and classy entries from @Sobreiro, @spedwig, @Sizer, @Raid71 or @HelloMuller; while @Fernando Lucas, @Dbed, @Agnosticator, @Gaston, @frenchbloke, @mthemordant and @Kevllevell came out with a handful of fantastic illustrations to accompany their designs. Also @bryantpaul, @Berserker, @lordmitz, @Amalgamated biscuit, @the_legendary_shark and @dancingpencil brought some smart and funny concepts to the table.

It takes a retrofuture approach, being inspired by how I imagined the year 2000 was going to be when I was about 9 years old. Dot matrix printers on antigravity boards. The logo is dots, but that can also be subtracted space from a band of colour, or parts of an image for fill, diecut out of the cover to reveal the first page, or what ever.

The quality and diversity of the entries is phenomenal. Just amazing, congrats to all. SO many funny and original takes on it.
Don't want to go through them all but @agnosticator's cover is my personal favourite I think, kinda chilling actually. Though who doesn't have a soft spot for a T-Rex with prosthetic chain guns?
@Mister Andersen's is just elegant as all hell.
