Nice episode but this slow pace is killing me! I like to consume everything in one sitting, whether it's a bar of chocolate or a comic. Whoomph! Gone, enjoyed, can be re-visited for closer attention to detail at a later date. Except for the chocolate.

Luke sure looks dead dead.

I had a prescient moment on page 2, I knew exactly what would happen and how it would look on page 3 - right down to the dialogue! It might be possible I identify a little too closely with Jack. As soon as Alice asked if he was dead yet, I was betting he'd do what I'd have done.

And what a lousy time for him to do it, too.

It might be unfortunate for them that Luke is dead, what with Mark back in town of an unreasonable state of mind and Luke being the only other expert on mind control available to them...
...ah, but who knows what Arkady is busy learning now?

I don't think she'll learn it soon enough to do Kait much good, though...

Hi Ariana and everyone who brings FA's into my laptop.

This maybe, just may be the best single week episode of Freak Angels ever! That punched me in the gut then stomped on my head as I tried to breath. Just simply one of the best written and drawn titles anywhere; not just the net but anywhere. Good stuff.

I had good news this week. Latest test and pictures came back free of anything new. My neck is in almost total atrophy from everything I have been through. However, I am alive and they give me drugs for the pain. Oh well. I do miss food but that's a small price to pay I suppose.

I think it's far to early to count Kait out, Mark's been practicing a lot of mind control and probably other unsavory uses of their powers, but it's all been on normal people who are already broken not another Freakangel.

I wonder with both Luke and Arkady in a "dead" state if they will see each other in that otherplace 'kady seems to go to when she comes near death.

Wonderfully shocking, unlike others I totally did not see that coming from Jack. Hardcore indeed. But as jam-packed with "oh, shit" moments as that episode was, the repercussions are amazing -- do Alice and Jack get banished for murder? What happens to the package when 12 are now 11? Can Mark (with or without Kait) stand up to a concerted effort from all the others (I say no way)? Lots more fun to be had -- fooking brilliant.

I don't see how they get banished for murder. Luke was an armed fugitive who assaulted Kirk (even if he deliberately didn't kill him), shot down KK (and there's really no way to set a steam-copter crash on "stun") and shot at Jack. All this after committing mind-control rape. Some of the others (Sirkka, KK, Miki, Arkday, even Kait) may not like it, but it seems likely that they'll see the necessity of it.

What's interesting to me is how might this change the relationships within the 'angels. Could Jack's execution of Luke cause a rift between him and Sirkka? For that matter, Jack and Alice have hunted and killed together, which could be the basis for a pretty intimate bond itself. I'm not trying to "soap opera" Freakangels, but the interpersonal relationships within the comic are a huge part of it. And death always brings change.

Suck it Luke! Yeah I think your pretty definitively dead and good riddance. Bullets in the head, as every gamer and horror fans know, generally mean period mark. If he reanimates it won't be as the same old deuchbag. Their all psychics and he got shot in the head. And yeah your a bad ass Jack, but let's not forget that Whitechapel is pretty sheltered from the apocalypse. Alices' dialogue points this out, getting kicks out of his corpse, because she has probably seen horrors first hand that the angels have gotten to avoid. I hope Mark gets thrown down like a rude little novice but probably won't, I fear this may be the end for Kait. Doesn't matter though because Kirk has awesome god eyes and knows he's in town and is telling Conner. No espionage tricks for Mark.

@curb and Noogies - Jack and Alice cold-blooded? Is this suprising? So far the FreakAngels have shown (other than Miki wanting to take in the refugees) just how little it phases them to kill cold-bloodedly. I remember Kait asking questions of the unarmed shmuck, then shooting him as soon as he wasn't useful. How about the gruesome way in which KK and Caz killed intruders... explody-bits seems a mite overly cruel. I'm not condemning them for defending Whitechapel;, but... you know... not suprised.

I honestly don't think Jack threw up of his own accord. Seeing as it happened after Sirkka (and presumably the rest of the Angels) detected Luke dying, there was probably a reflexive psychic backlash from the nine of them (or eight, since Kait's been shielded) against Jack, which probably doesn't feel too good on the old gut. Thus, Alice's remark "Kids these days" is doubly funny because she wrongly assumes Jack is a pussy who can't kill without getting sick, when really he's just getting eight psychic kicks in the balls.

I don't know, I think being forced to shoot someone I grew up with and at least at one point considered a friend would probably make me throw up. Especially since the last time I shot and killed something was the last time I shot a gun (almost a decade ago, now), I can totally see where Jack's stomach is coming from.

On the whole, this week is 100% awesome. I think there's a lot of Levelling Up going on. Karl's comments remind me of Arkady's "Wider." bit from the first flashback.

@ bentohara - I'd say it was a matter of who was faster on the draw. By the time Luke knew he needed his shield up she'd already shot him. He caught a couple pieces of shot, but that's all.

@Stefan - I agree: Luke's not dead. At least, not for long. After seeing twelve figures in Arkady's vision, I'm thinking that there must always be twelve Freakangels. (EDIT: I see that @johnjones got in first with this idea.)

I've also been playing with the idea that the Package might not originate from within the Freakangels. Rather, it might be the result of something outside of the Freakangels operating through them. Maybe it has an interest in keeping them all alive.

Does anyone have the feeling that there might be another big reveal in this volume that kicks the story up to yet another level?

I guess even Freakangels can lie to themselves.

And I love art/stories that get people to tell themselves "aw yeah if I had been there I totally would have done that ass-kicking thing and kill people and all! Yeah!" Though that love is a bit more sarcastic than the love I harbor for FA in general. Bloody hell, that was three scenes and what, two seconds of action? Yipes! Karl is starting to creep me out, worried for Kait and I, for one, echo Sirkka with "Oh Jack! *sad face*" Because I don't think she was feeling bad about herself vis a vis who Jack had become but what his actions were going to do to his own psyche.

Because I've seen that in people I know and, to put it utterly un-gracefully, it sucks.

As for me, I'm getting my ass kicked by a nasty cold that of course has grown in strength in time to anticipate a very busy weekend. I'm severely sleep deprived and several hours behind where I wanted to be today. Hello Friday.

With the Luke storyline quickly winding down, I just had an exceptionally mean idea about what could be done with the Mark at this point... As much as I'm hoping that he's actually got more ego than skill, what if they decide to just not tell us if Mark wins or not? How long would it take the readers to figure out if Kait's secretly undermining the FreakAngels for Mark? o.o

I do like the theory that the FreakAngels can't die though. I suppose we'll figure it out pretty quickly though, Luke sure looks dead right now.

Wasn't it James Ellroy who said the only purpose of morality in fiction is to show the karmic price that doing bad deeds inflicts on the perpetrators. I know Ellis is a big Ellroy fan and somehow it seems fitting to Freakangels. To Ellroy's way of thinking, if a character never does anything bad, or if it never suffers a price, the story is not true on a moral level. (and if you read Ellroy's work, every character does bad things, and just about every character comes to a terrible end.)

Luke did bad things, and the creative team is showing his karmic price. The Freakangels have done bad (worse) things, and their karmic price is only beginning...

I really like the discussions about the extent of their powers. I think it is interesting that they really don't know what the others can do. All of them seem to be very private about their powers (poss because of the shame from what they have done). The result is that they all think they are further along then the others.

I loved, loved, loved the art on page 1. The shards of glass blowing past the panel edges, the reflections in the shards in the first panel, the pellet that changes course after passing through the hand, the partial shield that's just too little, too late, the ripples the pellets make in it . . . wonderful all around. Kudos, Mr. Duffield.

And Alice's lines on page 4, especially the last one. So perfect.

Very interesting episode. Can't quite say I liked Luke from the very beginning, so good riddance...for now. I think at the moment after making it stop raining Karl is where Arkady was out. I think the dude planting strawberries is Karl...or I made a big name assumption here. I tend to forget them sometimes.
I do say my favorite is always Connor though.

Sorta sad how they haven't brought Caz[the black chick/guy?], Kirk[I may getting Karl and Kirk mixed up...they are both bald], and Connor in though.

Glad they showed Sirkka at least. Another one of my favorites in the pool of the favorites. Glad to know she still exist at least.

Sometimes I feel 6 pages isn't enough. You're leaving me on edge all the time. By the end of it Freakanges may give me an anxiety attack.

The fact that Jack shot someone wasn´t what surprised me, but that he seemingly shot someone he´d known his entire life with ease... I had the same reaction as Sirkka. It made me feel a little better when he threw up, made him more human somehow.

Loved this episode, it had three of four of my favorites, Jack ,Sirkka and Luke. I really belive he´s coming back with a reboot.

What we get in these crippled weakly installments of the FA saga is a pale version of the printed story with all the gorgeousness of images as they are meant to be seen, and the full content as it was written to be read and appreciated.

But who can resist a good story, no matter how scrunched it is on your computer screen or how slowly it seems to be going?

I feel the opposite to be true. I always try to get people to read it on here (since we'll all end up buying it anyway) because of the suspense and the experience of coming on here and discussing things with other Whitechaplers. I feel more emotionally involved in the story when my favorite characters (Kait in this instance) are left in desperate situations and I am not able to simply turn the page. I think Warren has the perfect formula here, one week is just the right amount of time. I feel anxious or excited for the characters for more than just the amount of time it takes to glance at the next panel or page, but don't have to wait for a month or more for the next issue.

Well, that makes more sense, then, in terms of survival. A computer that's been hit by a virus or power surge might well have cached, recoverable data and be able to be rebooted. A computer that's had its moist internal components blasted out the back of it's skull onto concrete seems quite a bit less likely.

Of course, considering how adept the 'angels (and especially Luke) are with telepathy, it's possible that only Luke body is dead. Perhaps he's even now uploading himself into Jack's consciousnessness...

I don't know if anyone had already posted on the "Luke getting shot the fuck up!"*

But, the last twelve pages with Mark and Kat talking brought to my attention that Mark had been "killed by Karl and Kirk" but Mark survived somehow...

So the point I'm trying to make is, Will Luke pull a Hail Mary of the Freakangels and come back like Mark?

Jack openly hated Luke. Even back in the Spanish Inquisition days when they were hiding out in empty barns and buildings.

Not a huge surprise seeing Jack (to me, at least) put one between his eyes. Granted, since it was someone he grew up with, he vomited shortly after putting in the finishing stroke, but it wasn't exactly a secret that they weren't on good terms.

But if everyone's theory about immortality being a part of the package is correct, well... I imagine that the next time they meet, it'll be awkward as hell.

I actually enjoy characters with dubious and conflicted senses of morality. Heck that's why I love Brian K. Vaughan's Ex Machina. The point is to question the characters, I think of it as a morality tale.

There was an earlier comment about the limited format, and I was just responding without being too specific.
No. Responding is too strong. This was more like gently chiding. Or supposed to be.
You're absolutely right about the pacing and suspense. There is a different dynamic, though, when you have a completed volume. Then you have something more, but less than these episodic bursts.
(But when I read FA on my computer monitor, I find myself shifting gears to revise each weekly installment into one with greater continuity.)
Warren may have missed another calling in advertising to concentrate on illustrated novels.
