No pen-portraits. This is ART ONLY. Posting just a bunch of text, or a scribble and a vast number of words, will get the thread closed and your account banned.

NO MORE PHOTO-MANIPULATION "art". I'll just delete them. People have been drenching recent threads with several pieces at a time that they've knocked out in photoshop in 2 minutes with no thought at all. I consider this to be taking the piss now.

No more than TWO submissions by any one person in any one REMAKE/REMODEL.

This time, I am cheating more than usual.


So here's the deal:

You are an artist/designer. You have to put together the cover for issue 15 of a comic called AMAZING ADULT FANTASY.

Now, the publisher has decreed that, with #15, the title will become simply AMAZING FANTASY. But, I dunno, you're a drunk, or a drug fiend, or you have seizures or something, and you've totally forgotten about that. AMAZING ADULT FANTASY it is.

Thing is, there's a new character to be introduced on the cover. You remember that instruction. But you lost all the notes and pages -- you used them for bedding or toilet paper, you don't really recall. You know nothing about that character beyond its name, and that it apparently fits in a book called AMAZING ADULT FANTASY (which was once subtitled "The magazine that respects your intelligence").

All you know that is the title is AMAZING ADULT FANTASY, the issue number is 15, and there has to be a character called SPIDER-MAN on the cover somewhere.

And that's it.

It's up to you what kind of company you're at. What kind of comics you make. What era you're in. Who you are, even. Go nuts with it.

You have one week. Go.

Well, I'm posting this sideways to try and give you the whole effect without scrolling:

And because sometimes I get carried away with the text, the version without all the clutter (I added all the "this issue" text last, and am not sure I'm going to like it later... This version is a bit more understated.).

I did the drawing in about 5 minutes, but the text placement took FOREVER. I must say that I was inspired by Warren's blog post about David Pearson. I have loved his Penguin Great Ideas covers without knowing that they were by him (or anyone, really...), and it was nice to get more info on him. The only thing I think I really added, in terms of an actually good design idea, is the plus sign between "spider" and "man" instead of a dash (minus sign...). Also, tying Tsukamoto into the mix only came to me later when trying to figure out who that story could be by, and I thought it was funny that since he had already created an "Iron Man," it would only be fitting to just give him the Stan Lee-role in creating the entire Marvel U.

I just wanted to make a beautiful object that I would want to pick up and flip through, so hopefully I did that. I knew I wanted to do something with a spider body, but thought that it'd be more of a dissected body kind-of-thing. After drawing half the spider, I then just ended up drawing the human emerging out of the spider head, then drew the rest of the legs. The face came last, but looks pretty cool, I think. I did have to reference Gerard Way's "Fabulous Killjoys" teaser image (which is a spider...) to make sure I wasn't doing the same thing...

In regards to the Avatar sex-scenes, an alternate cover I almost did was more of a fashion mag with one of those blue chicks from the movie in very scant clothing, but I thought better of it, as it would not have anything to do with Spidey and I'd be copying James Cameron... Plenty of room for both, KirbyPunch. Comics relegated itself to not being able to use design and typography for so long, it's nice to see the medium growing up and learning to use any form that works. People like Brian Wood, Rian Hughes and Chris Ware have been pushing the design/typographic edge for years and really paved the way for others to dive in as well.

In regards to the topic brought up by KirbyPunch, You know, you can always open up a comic and see the pictures inside, even if there is a text-heavy cover :) I'm not picking on you, but it is an interesting point...
I'm feeling that text and design-centric covers are the future of comic covers. Or, at least, I fucking hope so. How long can Marvel and DC keep beating the dead horse of the unrelated cover art by a completely different artist anyway? Look at what a splash those newest graphic-y Invincible Iron man covers made, and those weren't even very good. But they stood out. The Tim Bradstreet (an artist I like...) covers on Punisher and the Bagley computer-painted Ultimate Spider-Man covers were pretty much identical issue after issue. I had to stop buying Punisher, and I accidentally bought double copies of USM 2 months in a row, thinking that it was the next issue... So, yes, a little variety please.

Anyway, I like a nice mix of art and text design. The Secret Warriors covers are a nice mix of art and type, I think... 1 - That there are so many people out there, who don't do this professionally, who are willing to put their work out there and by extension, open themselves to criticism. Anybody who's posted their work on this thread has my utmost respect and all power to you.

2 - Spiderman is such a well known pop-culture icon. Being able to completely disassociate yourselves from 60 years of history and come up with concepts so completely different to the established character is credit to your imaginations and artistic skills.

3 - After going back to the start of the thread and re-examining the postings, it's brilliant to see so many different styles. And just when you think you won't be impressed again, you look at the next excellent post. But here's the thing: no one's trying to out do anyone else (except those who post more than once to outdo themselves). There's no negativity here. Try to find that on any other blog out there. You won't.

So, if the next one's the last for a while, get your pencils ready. Anybody who posted on this thread and skips the next is absolutely mad. I think it's safe to say that EVERYONE would like to see more work from everyone here, so don't let us down or sell yourself short.

My personal thanks to every single one of you. And, on behalf of the group: A damn good, hard, thanking to the nut-bar himself: Thanks, Warren, for taking the time to give us this opportunity, despite the absurd amount of work you seem to be buried under.
