I love how there's so little drama when 'Kady teleports. No sounds, no flashes of light. The look on Mark's face there is absolutely priceless. Turns out there are things he doesn't know about the package after all.

It is warmer here at last after one of the worst winter's I can remember (this is of course relative, a bad winter for the UK would barely be noticed in more prepared and less wussy parts of the world). It is, however, going to piss it down all weekend. Ah well, can't have everything.

Been a mixed bag this week, took some photos, had cookies and tea with friends,and got some test results back which were all clear (all good!) but I still don't know what's wrong with me and it left me a little blue :( But today the sun is shining and I rode my bike to work so all is good again :)

I'm fine, thank you Ariana. Spring has sprung and all that. Just a bit longer and they'll be tearing up and resurfacing my street. They already have my sidewalk all marked up with their big-man-with-an-official-hat graffiti that'll stay there forever and make my yard look like a Nip/Tuck patient for a decade. *shakes fist at The Man*

I won't be too happy when summer rolls around, either, but we actually have four distinct seasons here, as opposed to back home, where it's five months of blistering summer, six months of frigid winter, and two weeks of transition between each.

Hey ho from across the pond here, in mid-west USA. I think Mark is going to undergo a beat-down radical transformation is what I think. He was already gloating about how he could manage Kat, a HUGE mistake to my perception. As to why Arkady did not collect everyone, I theorize that she only picked up those who were willing to kill Mark the *first* time (I'm basing this somewhat on Caz's comment to Alice in the alley), aside from Kirk who is busy being fixed by Miki right now. Either Jack doesn't fall into that category, or she figures he's not ready to kill another just this moment.

Maybe I'm imagining things, but this writing exercise/experiment of telling a complex story as a web based comic in 6 page bursts seems to be improving his already exemplary writing skills.
I'm just noticing the masterful pacing in this format. A slow build in the first 5 pages to that final panel climax that makes me want to skip the whole damm week so I can see what happens next.

It's as of his writing is bulking up from that of a long distance runner frame to that of a body builder frame.

Of course, Mr. Duffield's pretty pictures help out a lot.

yeah... I "took pause" at page 4 as well. in one brief instant, the Big Bad Mark is reduced from cock-sure megalomaniac to utterly terrified little child. I read no threat in that "I'm sorry", only terror, and the realization had he was, indeed, fucked.

it is so fitting that arkady is the most in-touch with the package. I'd like to read that as an obvious acknowledgment by warren that an ability to embrace "insanity" is truly empowering. and of course, the package is all mental, so the freakangel who had been pushed the farthest, mentally, and experienced the widest range of phenomenon, would have the broadest control. this was made implicit when she zapped Luke with her "Overdose Ray".

2 cents: I think arkady grabbed enough 'angels. in fact, 5 may have been overkill, erring on the side of caution. without flipping back, where are sirkka and connor? couldn't resist flipping back. found sirkka back in episode 72, couldn't find connor, but then again, I'm supposed to be working here. anyway, 5 on 1, I think Mark's toast.

I'm eager to find out if Mark and Luke were in league. otherwise, the justice in Luke's killing may come into question: he did left Kirk live, when he could have killed him, but then he did shoot KK out of the sky... knowing she'd survive..?

@ Thud - FA is posted at 12:00 in England, generally... that's why you're getting it at 5am.

@muse hick, inkgirl and others - I imagine Arkady found herself in a hurry and grabbed as many as she could before she had to rescue Kait. I know Arkady could probably have slowed/stopped time enough to gather them all, but she may be a bit out of sorts and rushed right now, and thus reacting the way that seemed best at the time.

@ Professor Image and others - we recently caught a glimpse of Sirkka when Jack shot Luke. Connor was last seen (other than in flashback) back in Ep. 60 and 61, when they took Luke to be chained in Kait's holding pit.
Edit - Though Karl tried to contact him when he started working on the weather... there didn't seem to be a response at the time (that we witnessed anyway.

I doubt Mark's going to die here, and I'm still on the fence about Luke, but not because of Arkady's vision. Arkady's vision happened before they shot Luke. I don't feel like she was seeing the future, so I don't think it matters that they were all there in it.

I think Luke let Kirk live so that he could show how superior he is and be a smug bastard. I don't think he had any sentimental reason for it, and I don't even think it was to keep them from killing him. I think it was purely so he could wave it in their faces, and make himself feel better than them. Based on what we've seen of his personality, I don't think he believes they'd actually kill him in the first place, so it was purely a posturing move to make him look more advanced and civilized than them.

Heh. Ellis' bad guy slapdowns are always a joy to read. Only this one looks like Mark will be slapped down so hard his head will be coming out of his asshole.

So where will the story go from here? Will the remaining Freakangels tell the surviving humans that heh, they trashed the world? Was the rainstorm artificially created, and if so, who created it? If Mark did it, he didn't seem to notice that it had been forcibly cleared up. Will the Sirkka and Jack relationship crash and burn given recent events? Will Arkady discover that the package allows one to alter a few alcohol molecules to create at least 80 proof whiskey?

That aside, my week has been in transition. The state tax beast has been fended off for another year. A personnel shakeup at my workplace has left me nervously wondering what's next. I'm squeezed between trying to have some semblance of a non-work life and being reminded that a train seat is not that great a substitute for a nice warm bed.

Well, one thing to consider is "are these the only Freakangels in the world?" It's possible that some other group of superchildren has been out there, biding their time and preparing to strike. The only other way the bad guys level stays even is for there to be some kind of Freakangel civil war over what happens right now.

Karl--my new hero. I wish KK would get more steampunkish(R) attitude like in the first few episodes. (Perhaps the start of that is commented below).

Page 1 "grab him KK". Did KK transport Luke while Arkady transported KK? Then since Caz was closer Arkady "grabbed" her herself? Or did Arkady transport Luke through KK. What did KK learn from this grabbing? What's the range effect here?
Page 2 last frame--was that a great translation from nutter to english, or what! I loved that.
Page 3 - "I'm the best mind of my generation". That's so British, you'd never have an American say that. It makes it wonderfully fun for us Yanks. I wonder did he mean of my generation of FAs? What does THAT mean? Why have none of them gotten preggies btw. Or did he mean of his generation of Brit's, humans? Wonder why megalomaniac mark(TM) didn't just say the best mind of all time?
Page 4 - it's been said, but WOW! Great WTF surprise. I was so blown away by page 4 that my brain erroneously told me it was the end of the episode and I went off to read whitechapel. Imagine my delight when I flipped back to check someone's comment on art and found two more pages.
Page 5-Top frame, I think everyone but Mark is looking at Arkady as she reveals the plan mentally. KK looks PISSED OFF!--yet strangely more real and attractive--like she found herself. I still think Kaitlyn could have taken Mark by herself, and predict that she will say that.
Page 6 - Look at the way all the light's gone out of Mark's eyes. He's not even trying to shield. He's about wetting himself. I predict that Mark will be gone, and no one will talk about it, not even to the FAs that weren't in the room, (like a dysfunctional alcoholic family, eh?), and we'll discuss it for months. Then, much later, maybe in a couple/three volumes, he'll have some affect. Ironic, isn't it, that when they broke the world, Mark told them to join hands, and they would have no idea of the power they'd have together, and now they do the same to break Mark instead of the world. Last frame, with the light out the windows--I like the shapes made up of broken glass and wood--they look like manga cats in negative space.

There I was thinking that Mark was a gonner this morning.
But that was before realizing that the FA's at the scene didn't have to kill him.
Well, maybe they could vaporize Mark, but why do that when he could just be cleaned out of all those nasty thoughts?
Maybe he'll just be Good Old Mark from now on, a happy-go-lucky guy, who you just won't be able to count on to do any heavy mathematics. Or maybe they'll just dig up all those rotten roots and leave him like a baby, all innocent and trusting.

@ Freakbox- Yeah, I know! It's like Warren and Paul are trying to out-do themselves with each installment. Freakangels is like watching a Quentin Tarantino movie; lots of dialogue and banter between the characters that culminates into some really fucking cool stuff happening!

Now that I have had time to read this whole thread and take another look at the episode I am thinking all kinds of thigns about what might be coming next. I think if Arkady is leading the circle then Mark's sanity is certainly in jeapardy. Not that he seems all that well balanced, but I recall Arkady's threat to Luke for just controlling his ex-girlfriend - she gave him an infinitesimal dose of her OD experience and promised the whole thing if she ever caught him doing that again. Thinking of what she might do to Mark's mind and I hear a toilet flush. Now if Karl is leading then Mark is just plain old dead. D-E-D dead.

The language in this is intriguing me. Not just the "best mind of my generation" because that does seem uttered so unironically that it's confusing (but I am happy to run with the idea that Mark truly believes he is Such Hot Shit), but there are so many Anglicisms the pacing worked out better for me when I read some of the lines aloud in my best fake Lock, Stock & 2 Smoking Barrels accent. You don't want to hear it, trust me. I'm not really thinking it "means" anything, only that Warren had a singular amount of fun writing this ep. But I did have to look up "ruck" and I don't know what is meant by "bundle." Usually I can get by on the English-English I've learned from comics and movies, but the quotient of uncommon phrases was unusually high this time.

And again, thank you. This was a wild, exciting and altogether important part of my day. }:>

and to be specific to the point of pedantry, round my way a bundle was generally a fairly low fi fight for soft kids - the kind where everyone would pile in swinging, but do very little actual harm - which ties in with the contempt in Mark's comment.

@ David Matthew I like the reference. I didn't know that poem, and it's a wild read. I'm not sure i get the connection, but then I don't get the poem. Lots of killer imagery and ideas though.

A smoothly-executed mindfuck scene. Kudos to Duffield and Ellis both.
Mark doesn't seem the fearful type to me; he didn't cower and beg when he was shot in the thigh. I think he genuinely believed (a) that he was the most powerful and advanced FreakAngel and (b) that that made him the rightful master both of the 'kAngels and of lesser mortals.
I say "believed", because he's just been persuaded otherwise. I think he now genuinely regrets his presumption, and not only because he's getting smacked down.
He now knows the others have powers he's never developed or even thought of. According to his belief system, that makes them his masters. It also means that, had he stayed with them, he could have developed his own abilities in concert with theirs. And, oh boy, with a mindset like his, that's going to be a profound and genuine regret.

One of the best episodes ever! Love seeing the expressions on Mark's face fade from utter confidence, through bewilderment, and ending in raw terror. Hey, has anyone else noticed that arkady seems much more lucid lately? She's still odd, but she seems to have a better grasp on things lately, whereas in the early episodes she couldn't remember much and was extremely spacey.

In the early episodes, she had only just returned from a major prescience bender, and couldn't even remember who she'd pissed off/terrified with it. I can imagine you'd still be a bit sparkly-headed for a few days after. Of course, she did do some prescience again later, but it seemed like more of a controlled attempt.

Yes Ariana spring is up, like the flowers in our gardens. I stopped by a small village along the Seine and on the wall outside a tiny chapel, among other unasked graffiti, there was a ship curved in the stone dating back from the 1600's and it was moving really. Street art from the XVIIth century.

@Everyone who has been commenting that the "evil" Freakangels were dealt with quickly: I don't think they are. It's still unclear that you can actually KILL a Freakangel. So much is unknown about the package, why they have it and how they got it that there is a LOT of story left. Mark didn't die from a direct strike to the brain, he awoke with new knowledge. Arkady was dead three minutes ago as KK puts it, and comes back with new knowledge. It seems that experiencing the edge of death enhances the package. We may have a resurrected Luke working to free a pacified Mark. Who knows?

To be fair, Mark and Luke weren't dealt with all that quickly. Episode 1 of Freakangels debuted on Feb 15, 2008. So it's taken more than two years of effort to get them to this point. And through most of that run, Mark has been a looming threat and Luke has been a ticking time bomb. Do you guys really believe that with the two most obvious "bad guys" dealt with that somehow the comic ends.

Consider that Kait is still going to have a serious bone to pick with Kirk and Karl. Remember, she was fully willing to listen Mark and take action. Mark was the one who decided to push things. Even if the next panel shows bloody, scattered bits of Mark flung all over that room, a CRIME was committed by Kirk and Karl. Likewise, despite what he'd done, KK clearly didn't want Luke to be killed. And it seems likely that neither did Sirkka. It seems likely that Miki would object and possibly Conner as well. For that matter, there wasn't a trial, either, which would upset Kait. Finally, recall that Arkady intervened with Luke the first time at least partially to keep him from getting killed. Grant you that Caz, Jack and Kirk were more on the side of "kill his ass." And Karl, as the Gardener, certainly recognizes the need to "weed the garden" once in a while.

The deaths of Luke and Mark could be nothing compared to a potential all-out Freak Civil War.

And even beyond that, you have relationship issues. Jack and Sirkka love each other, but can't seem to find a way to make it work. And now he and Alice have killed together. Plus, they clearly have... I don't know if chemistry is the right word, but perhaps, a congruence of personality. I've wondered a little about that ever since he shared that little joke with her while they both sat on Luke's unconscious body. You think Sirkka's going to be pleased with the idea of Jack settling in with Alice, somehow who is quite capable of monogamy. Plus, Conner had essentially "claimed" Alice as his stray. Jack "stealing" her from him would certainly anger him greatly.

Plus, let's not forget that "honorary Freakangel" or not, Alice is very much a human and quite a bit like the crew that was hunting them back in the day. And now she's killed one of them. Sure, Jack did the coup de grace, but it was Alice who truly killed Luke. Killed a Freakangel. And did it without so much as a second thought.

You think this is over if Mark and Luke don't have some kind of silly-ass "risen from the dead" moment? Please, this thing is barely getting started.

Since we haven't seen a body yet, I'm not assuming that Mark is dead. Next week, boyos.

Last week, we discussed whether Mark had been killed or not by the spike, and either way, how did he recover. Well, Mark seems to have odd expressions, somewhat disjointed conversational styles, and is a piss-poor planner. He had to kill Alices brothers rather than dominate them into what he wanted, and his reprogramming of Alice was pretty brutal and pretty easily reversed.

My current opinion? Mark did indeed get a spike in the brain, but his package enabled him to survive it. On the other hand his package wasn't enough to heal him completely - not to dissimilar to Arkady. So he's a moderately brain-damaged FA who's mis-managed himself into a pretty bad place.

Looking forward to next week, when my opinion will undoubtedly change again. :-)

Alice is the product of the post-Freakangel world. Her entire formative years have been in this new reality. Sure she doesn't have the Package. But she's killed Luke and came close to killing Connor (twice!) Why? Because while they've been sheltered at Whitechapel "remaking society" she's been out in the new world unprotected getting tough. I'm not sure the Freakangels aren't in big trouble if she finds out they ended the world.

Nah, you had it right the first time. That scene was pure sex. Not all intimacy is physical. In fact, she also seems to have a bit of hate/love with Kirk (doesn't everyone?)
