A clip from the first episode of Mononoke. It's a spin-off from a ghost story anime called Ayakashi (not to be mistaken with the horrid magical girl anime of the same name). The art is gorgeous, and the animation has a really interesting paper-doll / disjointed quality to it.

Tom And Jerry - The Invisible Mouse.

Back before they were churning out low-budget crap like The Flintstones, Hanna and Barbera were responsible for some gorgeous work. In particular, check out the high quality of the backgrounds, with beautifully carved wooden furniture and a vibrant palette. Appliances, walls and carpeting, ornaments and sundry items are all rendered with artistry rather than roughly sketched in as filler.

I would argue that even though the H&B stuff was lower budget, the first two seasons of the Flintstones were awesome. you can usually tell if an episode is from the first few seasons by the color of the interior of the Flintstone's house (blue instead of beige) and Barney's nose (pointy and long, not short and squat like Fred's nose). I still love some of the old H&B stuff like the Herculiods (a cool revamp of that would be something I would love to work on), Space Ghost and Johnny Quest. all of which sport beautiful character designs by the late, great Alex Toth. limited animation yes, but well designed.

I've only seen those terrible beige-interior Flintstones episodes, where usually the only background is an armchair roughly sketched in black and not coloured in. The Herculoids weren't bad, but IMO none of the later HB cartoons were a patch on their earlier Tom & Jerry work.

Well to start I just want to thank all of you for always delivering great things. And I hope I'm not repeating myself to much feel s like I already have mentioned most of what I like in one thread or another but here it goes:

Lets start with some pure childhood nostalgia that still manages to entertain my boring grown up self "Resan till Melonia" a version of The tempest by one of my all time favourite animators Per Åhlin.

This is a much later find Raoul Servais that often manages to make me think a bit after seeing on of his films.

This film is so great because it manages to take something as dated as marionettes and manages to use them in a innovative way and tells a better story because of it.

I think they might have had help from the Greenwich Planetarium team on that one - if ever you get the chance to go there for a show, I'd recommend it. I saw one where Liam Neeson was the narrator for a season on black holes and the animations looked similar if not more involving for their incredible scope and the hlaf-leaned-back vantage point you get.

@Ben - I wouldn't be surprised if Russell T Davies happened to visit the Greenwich Planetarium in 2005, saw the black hole exhibit, and thought to himself "I fucking WANT this in the show!". Hiring the planetarium animators would be the logical choice at that point.

Hi!

I'd like to link a friend of mine who does traditional hand-drawn animation (although he colors them with computer); he has very distinctive style, and he's now working on more material. I've known him for ten years or thereabouts, and he's a big fan of comics; some characters featured in this clip are very reminescent of the Hulk. He recently graduated, and has been released into the wilds of the job market.

Link to the page, since I seem to have some problems with embedding the video itself (about a minute in length, since it is a sample).

I personally find his animation style interesting: it is somewhere between anime and traditional animation, and he has a good eye for characters and backgrounds.

The only thing I would dare to submit here I can't find. So maybe one of you have heard of it. I believe it was called "The Custodian" and I believe it came out some time in the mid 1990s, but I just can't recall what year. I am fairly certain, however, that it won the Oscar for Best Animated Movie in Short Form. I think.

It's drawn very simply, basically black ink only. And is the narrative of the Custodian who is literally in custody over Earth and Humanity. He cleans up after people and feels a bit frustrated over the messes we make but has a grudging love for us. His narrative includes "The Kid" (Jesus) who listened too intently to his stories and ultimately decided to visit Earth and live among the people, which didn't go very well for him. Simple, sweet without being cloying, and haunting. And the damn thing is I have only seen it once, when it aired on PBS perhaps 15 years ago. Can't find it online anywhere.

I *hope* have the details right. Anyone?

Seriously, this is the movie that Inception wanted to be to my mind. I'd compare this with any masterpiece by Vermeer, Renoir, Monnet, whoever your favorite painter is.

Because I LOVE the standy Batmobile and the way it turns, the space around it - it's just perfectly done - but I thought I'd get to the guts of Batman breaking the 4th wall with the HAMMERS OF JUSTICE!!! Because it's :-) :-I :-D :-( ;_;

I was put off BTB&tB initially by the lack of Hamill, Conroy and, most of all, the preceding The Bat-man which I tried to love but couldn't (The Edge's theme music didn't help - you're in U2 and you can't play guitar properly- stay away from Batman!!!) so I just figured me and the WB lived in different worlds.

Then I saw this: [from about a half hour in]

and I was - " 'the fuck is up Aquaman? " - and I found out - and my God what a great, great show Brave and the Bold is!

Maybe too few people saw the show when it was originally airing because the world wasn't ready to process how brilliant and bold it is. I love this show now and I still can't believe what I'm seeing in a Batman cartoon.

@William - Ach! I missed the Brave & the Bold lovin', sorry! I did watch the series with much great love and tremendous sorrow when it ended. I kept the final episode on the DVR because GODDAMN. Brilliances.
