That's Makoto Shinkai of Voices of a Distant Star, Place Promised, 5 Centimeters Per Second.

He makes heartbreakingly beautiful tone poems in falling rain, cicadas and text messages from outer space.

I have no doubt this film is as gorgeous as this trailer all the way through.

@oddbill - you missed off 'Journey to Agartha' which is also amazing.

@Flaybo - I both missed it on that list and also in real life, as this is the first I've heard of it. Thanks for the tip! I am seeking it out now!

@ Wood- I'm glad he's still working on this. I think I pledged to his Kickstarter for this a million years ago.

I'm not sure if I would categorize this as "outstanding", but I think it's fun and maybe somebody here might like it:

@William: Not outstanding, but clever and welcome. I like the nods to Reeve and Reeves.

    It's wonderfully executed

Debuted this Saturday night, first in the US then a few hours later in Japan. Appearing in other parts of the world in the days to come. Anyone else watch it?

It's definitely a little cringy-ish if you ignore the clever writing, I was sold long ago on the fact that it's written by Dai Sato and directed by Shinichiro Watanabe. Watanabe, of course, directed Cowboy Bebop & Samurai Champloo. Sato wrote on Bebop, as well as Ghost in the Shell, Eureka 7 and Ergo Proxy. The studio is Bones, which just manages to make the most amazing looking ...everything - Eureka, Darker than Black, Wolf's Rain, Fullmetal Alchemist and on and on.

So either this is a monster home run or the biggest failure since Ghostbusters II.

And I don't know why, as often as not, the "video/mp3" button just gives hyperlink code either. *grumble*

@ razrangel - I watched it. I hate say it, but I was...a little disappointed. Maybe my expectations were too high. I'm going to watch all of them because there is still some nice animation in there, but I dunno. It's missing something.

I think what was missing for me, that would have made me a little more critical if I didn't know the creative team, is that I didn't know what Dandy wants, besides the money from alien hunting and as much T&A as he could get.

Instead the stylization was the major character. Therefore, I really want to see where all this cleverness gets us. Something sharp and slick ("I know this because Tyler knows this") or something that goes splat and smells a little?

Tonight my brother sat me down and had me watch all of season 1 of RWBY, made by Rooster Teeth, the same production house that made Red vs Blue.

I enjoyed it quite a bit even if the animation falls well short of "outstanding." It was a fun story, making me think a little of Hunger Games and a lot of Soul Eater.

there's a whole lot of "what the fuck" happening in these, but I like it:

That was a strange little pair of videos, but more due to what's edited out than anything else. Bleeping shit and the god out of god damn, fuzzying out a middle finger. I'd have watched on to chapter 3 but the arbitrary edits killed that idea.

Shameless plugs for some incredibly talented people I know, but these are, in my opinion, outstanding examples of animation.
This music video for Elliot the Bull by Sam Lewis at Oh Yeah Wow is beautiful stop motion wood animation. I had the pleasure of watching this develop week by week over several months. It's simply stunning.

Felix Colgrave is another freakishly talented animator and if you haven't come across his stuff before, find and watch it all. This is his latest. I could watch it for hours.

Man Spaghetti is a little older, but it's a work of twisted genius.

I could go on, but I'll save some for another time.

The Blender Foundation just released a teaser trailer for their next big film project, and it looks pretty amazing:
