OK, I'll take up this diversion - I don't read a lot of Marvel, so I apologize if I'm not up to speed on what's being published. I just jumped over to Marvel Universe for some perusing.

Strong Women characters who could use the Warren Ellis touch:

A Remake of Ion could be very cool in your hands - establishing a strong, smart female never hurts.

Would Bendis allow you to play with his Alias character? Again, she's probably all in the background of Avengers, but I think you'd make a great (Jessica?) story.

You would make a killer Squirrel Girl story.. but I don't think they'd let you print it.

Things *you* could remake or treat with respect to make enjoyable

Batroc Ze Leaper - I could see some really sick, grim humor out of a character that's fucking retarded to begin with.

Cypher - the mutant - the adventures of a super-linguistic nerd - screams for a modern-day tale w/o super powers gimpsuits all around him

Remember Jim Lee's BodyShoppe art? If you ignore lady d-strike, you could probably do something with that.

Simonson's Malekith always seemed to be an awesome villain to me, never seen it since the Simonson run. Too bad Beta Ray Bill is so high profile, you'd rock on him.

Just bizarre shit I thought while I looked at Marvel characters

Has the Watcher done anything lately? (heh) You know, an entire comic of just him watching as the world blows up would be fucking funny and totally against the character's purpose

It, the Living Colossus and Shadu the Shady are starving for attention in a Fin Fang Foom kind of way

Officer Z.E.R.O. - from the MU page - "It was meant to be the police officer of tomorrow. It was supposed to save lives. When Doctor Thomas Rizzo created the Zone Enforcement Response Option construct, it was with the best intentions." - You could teach readers a thing or two with that one.

If you're in the mood for a western, the Two-Gun Kid is sitting out there wondering why John Woo hasn't called him

Andre Navarro's Doktor OctoCock is looking for some action, I'm sure :)

Things I laughed at while doing this: "Gorilla Man" - not just one hero, but two; "LifeGuard" - some poor soul was desperate to hit a deadline; apparently Minnie the Model can "project energy"; "NightClub"; "Peacemonger"; "Right-Winger"; "Secret Ninja" (/facepalm), "Thor Girl" - there's a fucking Thor Girl and no one's doing a comic about her?; "Triathlon"... ok, I'll leave it at that. Hope I didn't bore you.

Fuck, back to programming. Thanks for the diversion.
-B

Edited: drop Cloak and Dagger, Supernaut. Apparently they're in use.

Edited again. Dropped White Fang.

You know what I'd like to see?
Those old Marvel properties of Stan Lee™ and Jack Kirby™ in a comic, just working and talking in 1950s NYC. I know you know enough about them to make this happen. Perhaps they write issues of Spiderman and Captain America that reflect their personal lives, perhaps they reflect some qualities of the characters they invented. I don't know. Maybe they were kind of shitty human beings like everyone else. Even a newsdesk (comicsdesk?)office drama could be interesting, Mad Men for comics.

Or you could go with the Victory Boys, as wikipedia puts it:
"First appearing in Comedy Comics #10 (June 1942)[61], the Victory Boys were a group of German orphans lead by American boy named Victor who fought against Nazis in Germany during the War. The characters or team have yet to appear in the modern age."
That's ripe for the picking Nazi punching action right there.

I believe you said you read it and thought it was too fucking nuts.

I also suggested Mummex: King of the Mummies, the 200 foot tall alien detective from Tales to Astonish #8. I forget what, if anything, you had to say about him.

As for new suggestions... uh... Well, ever since Fraction brought him back in Uncanny X-Men, I thought you'd be perfect for a Doctor Nemesis solo series.

EDIT:

How about Motormouth? She's a foul-mouthed homeless teen from London who finds high-tech shoes that allow her to walk into alternate dimensions and stuff. People have been mentioning NFL Superpro, but I imagine that neither Marvel nor the NFL want to revisit that catastrophe...

Also, beyond that they're unusable, Warren's already written the Ultraverse, in a very nice-looking Ultraforce/Avengers crossover comic drawn by George Perez.

My new vote is Access, the guy that both Marvel and DC own from when they crossed over in the '90s. Here is a description of his powers from Wikipedia:

Access is now a native of both universes and his duty is to keep them separate. If they start to overlap, the universes will merge into the Amalgam Universe once again. Access must move from one universe to the other keeping people from crossing over. If he stays in one place too long, he can cause spontaneous crossovers to occur.

Now obviously that's a hard pill to swallow in terms of trying to secure movie rights for him, but maybe he could be redone to be able to travel to universes that AREN'T DC...

I'm not up to date on how they were used in the ANNIHILATION stories -- but perhaps the Shi'Ar Imperial Guard?

It's not a dormant property, but I'd love to see your take on the current version of IMMORTAL IRON FIST.

Another cosmic thought -- the closest thing that Marvel had to a Lensman/Space Police/Green Lantern Corps property was the Nova Corps, and last I checked that was nuked into dust at the start of ANNHILATION. Perhaps a restart, or some new far-reaching Space Police concept drawn from existing marvel concepts? Guardians of the Galaxy seems to be working along those angles, but is focused on one small squad. Hell, now that I think about it, perhaps the Imperial Guard could graduate from being a Legion clone and become this new Police Force?

A possible non-starter, but who knows -- D-Man? Former sidekick of Captain America, last I saw of him he was a homeless man who lived in some underground homeless community as their protector, but still had Avengers clearance at CapAmerica's request. This could be anything from a lowkey "compassion for the poor" story to "fantastic pulp adventures in the metal labyrinth beneath the world", a hollow-earth vibe. Sometimes the best stories come out of the seemingly lamest characters -- Swamp Thing and Animal Man, anyone?

If the SHOGUN WARRIORS thing is out of the question (licensing hell, I'm sure), how about that giant robot created to fight the Avengers? Red Ronin, I think it was called? Use that as a foundation for a "This is Japan in the Marvel U." story, pulling from anime/manga/toku tropes, mixed with superheroes? It worked for IRON FIST and wuxia tropes, after all.

Which reminds me -- Marvel did all sorts of weird cross-licensing with Toei and others in the seventies, which resulted in Shogun Warriors and Godzilla comics here, and Japan used it to springboard their version of SPIDER-MAN, and the venerable Super Sentai franchise was strongly informed by American superhero concepts (Battle Fever J was originally planned as an Avengers adaptation). Maybe there's something in there? Where are the rights to the old Spider-Man tv show concepts, such as Spider-man having a giant robot? I know Marvel showed subtitled episodes of that show on their website recently.

Someone mentioned American Eagle -- but I recall he was part of a whole slew of weird ultra-nationalist supers created for "Contest of Champions" in the 70's that haven't been used in years. Sabra (from Israel) was probably the most visible of those, and was used a decade or so ago in New Warriors, but there was also Blitzkrieg (Germany), El Aguila (Spain or Mexico, I forget which), Shamrock (Ireland), and others.

Any of the Elders of the Universe unattended? Runner, Champion, Collector...?

Don't mean to nitpick is a suitable phrase to introduce a bit of nitpicking. So here we go.

Are people actually reading everything else before posting?

We've had independant suggestions for:

Ka-Zar x 3
Silver Sable x 2 (my fault, that one)
Dazzler x 2
ROM x 3 [who the fuck is ROM - don't answer that]
Beta Ray Bill x 3
Living Colossus x 3
Cloak and Dagger x 2 (who get used a bit)
MODOK x 2
Iron Fist x 3
The Defenders x 3
Alpha Flight x 3 [or Omega Flight, they're different but confusion reigns]
Man-Thing x 2 [for fuck's sake, Man-Thing?]
Former Malibu/Ultraverse x 5

Mr Fixit was The Hulk and he's not clever or grey anymore. Isn't he red and world warring, or something?

I personally name checked Nextwave and it's host of characters [sort of] in two postings.

And finally: I thought I was the only person alive who'd read Nth Man [2 mentions]. Didn't that actually finish in a fairly apocalyptic kind of way? It's been a while and I don't have it anymore.

I didn't bother tallying suggestions for the characters who are currently being used [a lot of them. And I'm really out of touch with the Marvel Universe continuity - apart from Batman being dead and his old side-kick taking up the shield... hang on...].

And anybody X-men related - dead or otherwise, they will return. They always do. Besides, he needs to save those. The man is currently writing an X-book, old character back from the dead is the standard fall back if X-scribe's get stuck for a story, isn't it?

Now, I will shut up after saying: ALL OF YOU go and read NextWAVE again. Right now!

Don't make me turn this car around...

Just kidding. I mean, he did, but we were typing at the same time. To be fair Nick, we did at least come up with different issues that he wrote...

Sizer is right about one thing, TONS of characters you'd think were forgotten are all over the Marvel U. Kosmopolit suggested Nuke, but he's leading the Thunderbolts (but probably only until the Heroic Age starts...) as Scourge, and was fighting Wolverine when the Origins ongoing started a few years ago... I read a lot of Marvel, but I do feel like there are so many crappy forgotten heroes being jammed back into the new books that it's hard to pin them all down...

Well, in all seriousness — my vote would go to the Guardians Of The Galaxy as I mentioned earlier. I've always felt that the original line-up has such a great SF premise at its core (engineered humans mining Jupiter, crystallised human species living on Pluto and a time traveller who can't ever get out of his space suit or he'd crumble to dust) that never seemed to have been explored beyond the "super-heroes in space" angle.

(And yes I know they're being used now etc etc. This is just my inner geek talking)

Darkhawk - Involved in the War of Kings story, but possibley available for a solo series, I think he's a character of immense possibilities.

http://home.flash.net/~jeanneb/d.html

3. Guardsmen - thought this could be a cool OZ with supervillians style book, focused on the guards of the superpowered villians prison "the vault"

Just throwing some mental dartboards against the wall, of any obscure characters I can think of, good or not. If these are being used somewhere currently, I apologize in advance:

Trickster fourth-wall benders: Impossible Man, Madcap

Is anything being done with the "A-Next" characters in the same 'verse as Spider-Girl? Juggernaut's son J2, American Dream, and so forth?

Agent X, who used to pal around with Taskmaster (created by Gail Simone, I believe)

Some old villains: Diablo, who was a mad alchemist -- possibly a Ditko design, he had purple robes, a shoulder mantle, and a funky mask-headdress. Maelstrom, an old Avengers villain (I *think*), who wore a blue costume and headgear, and had a shifting energy-wave line effect constantly shifting around him. Zzzax, an old Hulk chestnut, a giant made out of electricity. I also recall a cosmic Hulk villain who looked like a gaping fanged mouth as drawn by Ditko, who used the Abomination as a catspaw. Had a name like "The Galactic Emperor" or something similar. Hulk jumping *into* this cosmic horror is what led to him meeting Rocket Raccoon for the first time, as a reference. Is anything being done with Baron Mordo or Dormammu, the Dr. Strange villains?

Genis-Vell's currently dead, I think -- but with Mar-Vell being brought back, maybe something could be made of Genis again.

Silver Sable, who used mercenary heroes like Sandman and Paladin.

Whatever happenned to the characters from SENTINEL, from the Tsunami line that also spawned Runaways? I can't recall off the top of my head what else came out of Tsunami...

LIVEWIRES, the transhumanist story by Adam Warren. Advanced "Life Model Decoy" androids doing black ops against *other* black ops organizations in the Marvel Universe (AIM, Hydra, Sentinels, etc.), seen from their artificial-life POV. One of the characters ("Stem Cell") was mentioned in passing during an Initiative story as a possible recruit, but I don't think anything else came of that. I don't know if the characters are owned by Adam Warren or not. An underappreciated gem, in my opinion, and possibly worth expanding on.

Not a serious suggestion, but I recently came across the "Marvel Mangaverse" trades, where various creators applied anime/manga tropes to Marvel names, to varying success. Turning the Fantastic Four into a knockoff of Evangelion was somewhat amusing, and Skottie Young did a nice "Spider-Man as young ninja", but Peter David's reimagining of The Punisher as a kimono-clad school headmistress fetishist was just... odd. Ben Dunn then took most of these characters and tried to do an epic "Anime Galactus" story, which wasn't very good, but had some nice art in places. I don't know if anything could be done with these (or should be done), but they do exist, and for all I know, Marvel might want to use them every decade or so for copyright reasons.

			 Here's a couple.
took me a while, because I couldn't remember the character's name.
Paradox, created by Bill Mantlo, and Val Mayerick, appeared in Marvel Preview #24, and one other story, but I don't remember where. Flaming gay super-spy, on the moon.

And while I was looking for that I found ULYSSES BLOODSTONE, who I totally forgotten about. Immortal, Hyborian monster hunter, with a big red jewel; what's not to love?

The High Evolutionary. Except for an abandoned city that was recently levitated in FF, he's pretty much inactive. And nobody writes him correctly, either - he's a man of SCIENCE!, and Mr. Ellis could have a field day with his futurism and positivism.

Wundarr, The Aquarian - updating him for the modern age would be a challenge. Or not - an unreconstructed hippie, unaware that the times have moved on, a super-powered Chauncy Gardener.*

The Beyonder was mentioned, but bears a second look, especially after /Supergod/. So powerful, so over the top, there's nothing good to do with him. Ideally, with his 80's jeri-curl and white suit intact. Hell, reboot the entire Secret Wars concept.

And I'd totally buy a Franklin Richards/Power Pack reboot.
---
* - crap, I see he was used in a throwaway manner during The Initiative. And also the bit about Steve Gerber losing control of the character. Still, he was dead for a while, so might be an opportunity for a relaunch.
