Moller International are well into development and prototyping on what they have dubbed "Skycar" [yep, all one word, no article].

I have to say, I'm suitably impressed. All the info is on their site and they've even got videos of the freaking thing "flying"! Check it out: http://www.moller.com

[sorry 'bout this, I'm having a lot of trouble getting the link to stick to the post: http://www.moller.com/index.php?option=com_jomtube&view=video&id=77&Itemid=79 - if anyone can help me out with that I'd be much obliged]

 How do I put this?

My college friends and I were just blown away by this when we heard about it and saw the pictures.

I graduated in 1986.

While the looks of the prototype changes every few years, Moller's sky car is still doing the same thing it has for twenty-five years: Hovering a few feet off the ground, making lots of noise, and causing young journalists who think they've got the story of the decade to gush FLYING CAR FINALLY HERE!!!! and recite the latest variation of the press release.
.

Look carefully at that video. See that tether? That was supposed to be a temporary safety measure . . . as mentioned in press releases from 25 years back.

This is more than vaporware, in that the guy actually builds things, but the actual flying car always seems a few years (and maybe some investor dollars?) away.

 My point about the wings: at some point this ceases to be a flying car and becomes an airplane.

As an object, the Skycar is remains very pretty, even 25 years later (and it amuses me that Skycars have appeared in Warren's run on Astonishing X-Men as well as in a few post-Alan Moore issues of TOP 10), but in terms of functionality, it's becoming less and less unique when compared to, say, a helicopter.

 This version of the flying car has been around for years, and by the looks of it, just as inefficient as the automobile. A dangerous-looking design as well, with 4 engines/props. We all know what happens to a car when one of the tires goes flat. Lose one engine and you are flying an unstable craft, lose two engines and no matter what you do it crashes.
There are already very small helicopters, the old standby autogyro, and the new wave of ultralight aircraft that are more efficient than the flying car.

 DARPA wants a flying Jeep:

In this case, the federal techno bad boys of DARPA have decided to have a crack at a real, no-shit flying car: and probably not just an ordinary car, but an off-road one to boot. They don't want a light plane that you can drive on a road, like the Terrafugia Transition. They don't want a paramotor, either. According to the Transformer TX announcement issued yesterday:

The Government’s envisioned concept consists of a robust ground vehicle that is capable of configuring into a VTOL [Vertical Take Off and Landing] air vehicle with a maximum payload capability of approximately 1,000 lbs.

The sky-jeep should be able to carry four fully-equipped troops, or alternatively one stretcher and one medic. It should be no bigger than 30 feet long by 8.5' wide and 9' high in ground configuration - on the order of two Hummers nose-to-tail - and should have wheels and suspension giving "road performance similar to an SUV" and "capable of handling light off-road travel".

Don't get too excited though, DARPA are better at planning than doing;

Like all DARPA projects Transformer TX is unlikely to succeed at all. Even if US Marine rifle companies one day do ride to war in handy four-man sky jeeps rather than cumbersome choppers or Humvees, that doesn't necessarily mean flying cars for all any more than Harriers or Ospreys did.
