I didn't feel like there was much in the way of characters or plot.

Still, pretty art, pretty ideas — and Hickman's writing has impressed me elsewhere. Agreed; this is one of the most interesting and solid debuts I've seen in a long time. I've read some reviews that say there's too much to digest and it moves too fast, but I say "keep up, dorks". This is how a comic book needs to be done, much much more often.
I will agree also that this gives me the same sense of connection with a universe I thought I knew as the first issue of PLANETARY did.

Wonderful comic. I really enjoyed how it sort of figured out a new way to play with old toys, tying in the history of the order with the above celestial and other elements I won't mention for spoiler issues. I think that tying in with the mythology of the marvel universe like that not only works in favor of the book but also speaks to the power of the marvel mythology when it is used correctly.

I cannot remember the last time I gave a shit about the Celestials, but as soon as I flipped the page I almost shouted out OH MY GOD fucking Celestial!!

But if issue two has Da Vinci punching the Watcher in the face, I fucking walk.

Fuck me, were you only really blown away by the art and concepts? Is that all? I can clearly see why you wanted more fully-explored characters and a complete plot, if all the rest of it did was really blow you away...
I feel like Hickman gave us a real shock & awe opening, at the expense of introducing the cast to a point where I could emotionally connect with any of them. The first issue felt, to me, like a summer blockbuster with some neat ideas and great visuals — but still a summer blockbuster.

BUT it's Hickman. I know he can deliver on the characters and plot, as well as the big clever ideas. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series, but there wasn't much in the first issue that stuck with me for very long, apart from the fact that it was very pretty, and OH LOOK, Galactus!

(As a testament to my reaction, the two books I bought last week were SHIELD and KING CITY. And by the weekend, although I could remember buying two comics, I couldn't for the life of me remember what the second one was. When I finally opened my bag and pulled them out, I was rather startled.)

I would have Hickman's baby if he so chose, but Secret Warriors, honestly, has gotten less interesting each issue. SHIELD is off to an amazing start, but as excellent as Nightly News and Pax Romana are, I'm still not quite convinced he can keep up that kind of quality in an ongoing series. It touched on five discreet time periods in 34 pages, but I would've rather it had pared down to, say, three or four time periods and gone into more detail on some or all of them.

Someone up-thread compared it to PLANETARY, and I think what I responded to more favorably PLANETARY than I did in this issue was that PLANETARY always put a good balance on the plot, the concepts, and the characters — we got a little of each in every issue.

(Also, by the fourth time we got someone saying "This is not how the world ends" in the story — which was the fifth time I read it in the issue, since I'd read the title page — I went "I know already!")

I bought the first issue after reading on Mr. Fraction's twitter that he liked it.

Yep, it's good. I mean, it's great. Fuck. I mean, if like, creators (not just Mr. Hickman or Mr. Weaver, but creators generally) can see this, I feel like I should have something to say other than, man, I love the double page layouts and SHIELD has this sense about it, maybe it's from all the different incarnations of the s.h.i.e.l.d. (to differentiate between the fictional organization and the comic) bird on the armor of the different historical figures, or that the historical characters have a glint in their eye when they say "This is not how the world ends" or how comfortably mysterious the dad of the protagonist is that it feels EPIC. Should I? I'm impressed by the issue and I haven't read anything else by Mr. Hickman or Mr. Weaver than a couple issues of Secret Warriors.

That two page spread of Imnhotep standing on top of the pile of human and Brood bodies is wow. I am impressed by the composition and construction of the pages. Case in point: I didn't even notice the little squares on the top left of the panels on the image posted, and now that I noticed it, I like that little touch.

It feels like the start of a wild adventure. Count me in.

I agree that there was more skipping through time periods than getting to know the main character, but with as much madness as was packed in, I'm hooked. That Night Machine (I think that was his name... the guy blonde guy's dad...) dude was nuts, the fathers (I'm assuming) of Reed Richards and Tony Stark, and all the other crazy stuff going on... A main character who may have ties to Infinity, Quasar, or Captain Universe (because of the outer space shadow stuff...)? I can't barely tell what's happening, but in the best way possible, like when they let Mark Millar loose in the Ultimate U. (or Grant Morrison anywhere...). And beautiful artwork. I don't know if I've seen that artist before (if I have, I guess I didn't really notice), but those backgrounds are amazing.

I've seen some complaints on CBR that it plays a bit loose with Marvel continuity (the Galactus appearance...), but I guess I don't care. Just call it an alternate universe and proceed with the mind blowing.

Hickman was a professional graphic artist before he got into comics, which explains his superior design sensibilities.

Personally, I felt that his diagram at the end of the issue was a bit too much — too disjointed from the rest of the material. Its like walking through the Louvre admiring Delacroix followed by a room full of Muller-Brockman posters (Yes, I exaggerate but you get the idea). I do like the mix of bold sans serif type in the logo with the subtle handwritten notes on diagram though (not too sure on the necessity of his 'trademark' paint splatters) and I think that style (old/new) would be better suited for the book instead of his Nightly News style graphics.

I'll end my nagging now.

"This is not how the world ends" of course raises the question, 'how does it end?' For my money, that's the key to it. As with every other well written story: hook the reader, then develop the details. It might turn out to be rubbish in the long run, but it's a very strong start.

It's a damn good looking book and an intriguing enough set up to make me read the next issue. So, I'd say as far as first issues go: mission accomplished.

"This is not how the world ends" of course raises the question, 'how does it end?' For my money, that's the key to it. As with every other well written story: hook the reader, then develop the details. It might turn out to be rubbish in the long run, but it's a very strong start.

Yeah, I took that to mean that the Shield/SHIELD people (and presumably HYDRA, or the organization that would eventually become HYDRA, which I assume the Chinese guys who talk to the Celestial woman are part of) are in fact aware of how the end of the world will go down, which fuels their confidence in their endeavors. It's not meant to happen like this, so we know we'll be victorious today.

Looks interesting. The pacing completely threw me off. Too much weird stuff happened waaaay to fast, for my liking. The introduction into the immortal city alone could've probably filled a large chunk of the issue, but at least the "this is not how the world ends"-bit from the flashbacks is a teriffic hook.

And from what I've read from Secret Warriors, Hickman certainly knows how to write his secret societies, so I'm having a bit of faith here.

Two issues in, Paul O'Brien at the X-Axis has completely nailed my feelings about this book.

"It’s… If I’m being honest, it’s a book I respect rather than actually enjoy. It’s ambitious, it’s boldly oblivious to commercial considerations, and it’s seemingly trying to combine the Illuminati conspiracy with the mind-expanding weirdness of Silver Age superhero comics. If I’m pushed as to why it doesn’t particularly grab me, I suppose it comes down to a lack of clearly defined characters; it’s a book of ideas rather than people, which would normally be fine for me, except that they’re rather New Age-y ideas. It’s certainly not a bad comic and I’m glad to see something like this getting a shot from Marvel at all, but it doesn’t actually entertain me very much."

... it’s a book of ideas rather than people, which would normally be fine for me...

I tend to agree. But I'm in for the long haul to see where it goes. Some of my favorite books are 22 pgs of grossly mind-bending ideas. Morrison's Invisibles and Ellis's current Supergods are more grand form concepts than about characters. And that's just fine. On the opposite end you have solid character development as the support beam for seemingly redundant ideas such as Kirkman's Invincible and The Walking Dead Those are great books as well. Hickman is doing great work over at Marvel. He's placed Nick Fury in an ongoing comic that is actually selling well. I don't like his FF. But I don't like the FF... Almost impossible to get me to care about them in any book.

So I say, bring me more of this secret history of the Marvel Universe. They had me hooked when they showed Apocalypse as one of the first members of the S.H.I.E.L.D. But I love secret history-type sciencey, mysticismy, stuff.

The S.H.I.E.L.D. does remind me of another diminutively popular comic scribe's work on the secret history of the Wildstorm universe. Now that book has the science, the grand ideas and great character development. Elijah Snow is one of the coolest character in comics, figuratively and literally. And I felt Ellis really developed John Stone into the perfect blend of James Bond and Nick Fury. Now he may descend upon me from the 'net and tell me what for... But that's my 2 pence.

If I’m pushed as to why it doesn’t particularly grab me, I suppose it comes down to a lack of clearly defined characters

i'm hoping that's an intention of the writer. i mean, the way i see it mister hickman has 'laid his stall out' with the idea of the story, and the characters will hopefully develope as the story progresses. i like uncertainty of storytelling that keeps me guessing. good work mister hickman, your comic made my head smile

@Jon Wake mentioned "Pax Romana", but didn't quite make it explicit: If you like S.H.I.E.L.D, run now to your shop and pick up "Pax Romana." At one time Hickman said he'd be writing more in that series, but I'm assuming his work on S.H.I.E.L.D. is absorbing any follow-on ideas he had for PR.

Re-read the first five issues last night, and with each issue I keep loving this book more and more. In some ways I view its relationship to the Marvel Universe the way I view Planetary's relationship to the Wildstorm Universe: sure it is there, but in many ways it seems like an alternate/What If?/Elseworlds take.

And damn, the series already needs annotations and has me going to look up more about the characters.

And the art is just gorgeous.
