This just happened about 2 hours ago.

Red Bull plane crashes into Swan River

http://www.perthnow.com.au/news/red-bull-plane-crashes-into-swan-river/story-e6frg12c-1225854120441
[apologies, but the link refuses to be a proper link]

This is the fourth time the Red Bull Air Race has been to Perth and the first mishap so, generally speaking, they're not too bad.

The thing that piqued my interest was the actual article itself. A perfect example of what to do with a breaking news story when there are very few details available: simply repeat the same information SEVEN TIMES! Six different eye witness's accounts AND the reporting staff all saying the same thing. The perfect use of 933 words.

And just in case it sneaks under your radar, there's this lovely link at the end of the story:

I saw this on the news. Apparently the pilot had only yesterday completed underwater training, so at least "how to swim out from under an immersed airplane" was fresh in his mind. Actually, he seemed quite sane for an adrenalin junkie. Apparently (perhaps ironically) the guy is the pilot that the media likes to get quotes from about "how to do insane stunts and not become a darwin award- safety first!"

(oo! Ban hammer on "louisvuitton" me thinks!)

My office has a good view towards the city so we get to watch the planes practice every year. If we'd been paying attention we probably would have seen the pilot heading in for his date with the river.
