Damn excited about this as it's my yearly justification for Spike TV existing on my cable box.

Also excited because this season will feature a Mongol finally. A bit disappointed from the promo's I've seen because he's fighting a Comanche and it look to be lots of horse riding and archery, which may be more accurate than what I have in mind which is pissed off Mongol warriors bum rushing tee-pee's with rape on their breath and rotting meat torn from their enemies in between their teeth, clothes stained in blood, swinging a sword around their collective heads, and tossing dead plague babies at their opponents from a burlap sack.

Ahem, maybe they could move it to Showtime?

actually, Mongols and Comanche were more or less similar in terms of tactics (lightening raids, horse-firepower, terror tactics). i'm interested to see the results of the ep.

I'm kind of disappointed that they're starting off with "modern" warriors this season, as i'm more into the swords and axes kind of thing. But to each his own, i suppose...

It's a neat toy, but i'm really not sure how effective it'd be in most situations. presumably it takes at least a bit to set up, and it can only take down a single line of enemies. The grenade is way more mobile and you can probably carry a lot of them. I was thinking GSG-9, but SWAT might have this one...

The SWAT vs. GSG9 one was interesting, and I was initially giving it to GSG9, but the semi-auto shotgun made a big difference in my mind. I recalled how effective it was in Spetznaz vs. Green Beret.

Though the one I was most interested in was Spartan vs. Samurai. That was just fuckin' cool. And is it wrong that the Spetznaz guy is just great to watch with his utter, dead-eyed confidence? They turned the IRA into stew.

As for later matches, I want to see Nazi SS vs. Vietcong.

I have to wait for these to come up online, so I'm a little behind the moment here, but so so be it.

They definitely upped the game with the dummies this season - did they hire a fx specialist with splatter movie experience? Gallons of blood in this one. But it does demonstrate just how brutal guns are.

Overall though, I think that SWAT proved to have the superior arsenal, with the heavy caliber sub-machine gun and the semi-automatic shotgun. I have to give SWAT the nod with their sniper rifle too - it wasn't semi-automatic, but when you're using a sniper rifle you don't get a second shot anyway. The exception would be the Taser Shockwave - that thing was cute, but not really mobile. I'd definitely trade that in for a couple of flash-bangs.

( @Mark - I agree - they were robbed in that sniper test, the Remington clearly did better. There is no such thing as a safer side of the face in that kind of situation. )

I think that German fellow going to town on the torso-bot was a little disturbing, like he was frustrated and just wanted to destroy something. Or having a flashback of his old chicken pal...damn.

I'll probably wait until I have a few of these on my DVR before I watch, but last night sounds interesting.

I couldn't help but laugh when I read about Rajput vs Centurion as Rajput is the name of an Indian eatery in my former hometown, shut down several times for health violations.
Many a proud warrior has been felled by the E Coli of the Rajput.

Also this year we get Mossad!

The Attilla vs Alexander episode sounds great too. I loved the William Wallace vs Shaka Zulu episode last year.

@looneynerd I figured as much but I will cop to not knowing much about the Comanche but if you say they are similar to the Mongol's in tactics I have some reading to do. Always thought the Mongol's were just terrifying and interesting to read about.

Also agree that the sword and axe stuff is more exciting than the machine gun and grenade episodes,mainly to see the devastation those weapons cause to the human body explored so thoroughly. Guns and bombs is a pretty straight forward affair, but man, cut up a ballistic gel dummy with an axe and you've got some great TV.

just catching up on the DVR and I missed the show while it was off.

my favorite part of the first season was them testing the spetznaz grenades. They dropped them in to a washing machine or something and while everyone else was running away the spetznaz consultant put on his sunglasses, lit up a cigarette and slowly walked away like it was something he did everyday.

@Lazarus99 - I did catch that 'special' episode. Good fun, though I saw a Spartan victory coming from a long ways off - that big-assed shield is a game breaker. I guess I wouldn't say that Spetsnaz taking the IRA was too much of a surprise either.

I was maybe a little disappointed that they wrote off the other finalists in the way that they did in some cases, but I can understand why. Still, I think an Apache vs. Shao Lin monk fight would have been pretty nifty too.

If I had a problem with this episode, it was in the choice of Alexander's weapons. Overall, they seemed slow, clumsy and ineffectual. They were deadly when they hit, but it seemed highly unlikely that they'd be able to hit. Especially highly mobile targets like Hun horsemen. I really wish they'd tested things like his Shield and Armor. It seemed odd that the quality and capability of the Shield apparently went down since Spartan times.

Meanwhile, the next conflict seems absurd. Whatever the "quality" of Capone and his people, they have personal automatic weapons, which the James Gang doesn't (yes, the James' might be able to field a Gatling Gun, but a Gatling Gun is not a personal weapon like the Tommy Gun).

So that's the third episode in a row that I've gotten the winner wrong. And it's the second episode in a row where the weapons choice for the loser just seemed... odd. Tommy-gun, fine. Grenade, fine. But Brass Knuckles and Stiletto? How about instead of the Knuckles, they test the Colt Automatic Pistol?

How about if they did a test of Colt Automatic vs Colt Revolver, Winchester vs. Tommy-gun, Stick of Dynamite vs Grenade and Bowie Knife vs Stiletto?

I liked this one a whole lot better than the previous three. It was ancient combat, for one thing. Plus the sides seemed relatively evenly matched to create true suspense. Plus, it was two warrior about which I knew very little, so it was a learning experience to watching the show.

Still, Nazis vs. Viet Cong should be cool. I'm a little uncertain about applying the "villains" moniker to the Viet Cong. Granted that they were opposed to American interests at the time, but I have memories of the Fury comic by Ennis and the "...but they're Communists!" line.

And once again, it seems all about the weapon selection. Of four weapons, the VC had two that were essentially immobile. I was initially going to give this to the VC, because I figured they'd have AK-47s, but after I saw the weapons they had, I figured it'd go to the SS. And it did. The thing the show seems to forget is that guerrillas/terrorists are only successful when they use hit and fade tactics, or just flat set booby traps and leave the area. They don't engage regular soldiers in combat unless it's very briefly or they have no choice.

In the DW scenario, they can't use hit and fade, because it's a full-out fight to the death, so of course skirmishing forces will get kill by regular forces. Which is pretty much what happened. The only time I recall a skirmisher beating a regular was Apache vs Gladiator. A) the Gladiator wasn't really a solder and B) The Apache had something like 1700 to 1800 years of future development on his opponent.

Except that they've been nearly useless in the one on one or squad on squad combats because they're not designed for that and they're an absolute pig to reload. Now, in an army situation, they'd be great, but not a small unit situation.

I also have to admit that I started out expecting the Romans to win, but converted to the Rajput when I saw that Scissor-knife thing chop through Roman chainmail like it was wet cardboard. It thought it was interesting that the expert rated the Roman axe over the Scissor-knife, but in the simulation, the knife got more kills than any other weapon - except for the Rajput's other sword.

Apparently Sonny is trying to make the jump to Hollywood. He's already in something called Sinners and Saint. Later on he'll play "Special Agent Keith Klein" (really Sonny? Keith Klein? whatever buys your Vodka, dude...) in Hit List

I have to state that my personal favorite Sonny moment was in Back for Blood when he hits Geoff and then explains that no, in truth, his punch was maybe 30 - 40% of his actual power. Sort of like "It's not like I want to hurt you, silly Canadian person."

So, something that's bothering me about the Rajput/Centurion team up.

All of these people are supposed to be some kind of expert regarding the team they're on, right? If that's so then the guy who thought that chainmail would be proof against a primarily thrusting weapon needs to go back to school; thrusting weapons get in between the links with the point and the force of the blow pushes the point in, bending, separating, and opening the links. Chainmail is proof mostly against cutting weapons as it absorbs impact over the length of the cut and flexes in order to let the cut glance off (that's why butcher's still use very fine chainmail gloves).

For my part it felt like they flat-out lied in interpreting the results of the first two weapons. The longsword was clearly unable to penetrate the Immortal's armor. The Ax was able penetrate both the helmet and the leather.

Honestly, if they just had to make sure the Celts and the Immortals had two weapons each with the edge, why not give it to the Celt spear? Why contradict results we can clearly see with our own eyes?

Because they did the same thing with the Centurion vs. the Rajput? They gave the edge to the axe despite the fact that the katar made up for the second most amount of kills after their sword (but still made up nearly half the Rajputs kills).

I recall they also did during Capone vs. James. They tested the Bowie Knife, which delivered horrible damage and then they tested the Stiletto, which did not. And they gave the edge to the stiletto when every other time they give the edge to the weapon that delivers the most damage.

I found that one to be mildly silly. And it pretty well said it all that the most effective weapons by far were the two submachine guns. The rest of the weapons were more gimmicks than anything else.

You know, more and more, I appreciate Sonny Puzikas. A professional guy who knew his stuff and didn't need a bunch of macho crap to pump himself up.

I figured it was pretty clear that Vlad was going to win, but the Vlad experts made me really kind of cheer for Sun Tzu, who was, ultimately, more of a fictional conflation of a bunch of Chinese generals. If they really wanted a legend vs. legend matchup, they should've put thirty Chinese generals against Vlad as an actual vampire.

Beyond that, the weapons were cool and I did like the way that the Vlad expert redeemed the hand cannon by showing its effect in hand to hand combat.

Also missing Max Geiger and his glowy (alienware?) laptop. The touch-table (Is that one of those microsoft ones??) was kinda cool. The older Napoleon guy WAS amusing. I wanted a bit more splatter, but that's just my inner gore-hound coming out a bit. Washington's sword was interesting; the actual combined shape of the blade was well-showed in the show in a way that doesn't come across in the photos I've seen of his sword(s). Annoyed they didn't have him a red-head, or mention his self-confidence issues, but then again who wants to hear our first president wanted to hide out in a wigwam instead of be a general?

It looks like they're trying to put more emphasis on strategy and tactics this season as opposed to pure firepower, which is nice. The "x-factors" discussed just before the final payoff is interesting, as is the fact that they're running 5000 simulations now.

I'm uncertain about the Joan of Arc episode, because my understanding is that she wasn't really much of a soldier, but more of an inspirational figure instead.

It was cool to see the elephant stomp on a head and gel torso. It was stupid to see the thing in the actual simulation. But that's really nothing new. Especially in the pre-20th century battles, they've tended to throw in weapons that are absurd for small unit fighting. A war elephant would be an awesome, terrifying thing during ancient mass combat because it's guaranteed to be stomping and squishing its way through packed soldiers that can't get out of the way fast enough. With a five on five confrontation the Mongols will just shoot the elephant a couple of times and otherwise easily get out of its way.

The same thing goes for cannons, catapults and anything else that isn't single-man portable and single-man usable. Yes, it's kind of cool to see a cannon shooting through castle walls or a gel-torso getting squished by catapult-tossed rocks, but it's absurd for the final fight that will occur in the simulation later. Let these warriors can the weapons that they would reasonably carry to fight the type of battle that they're actually going to fight.
