There's a great documentary about Steve Ditko online, its worth checking out even just for the insight into the work of an amazing, but also amazingly reclusive artist. I'd link to it here but I don't want to embed the whole movie, so if you serach on Youtube its called "BBC - Jonathan Ross - In Search of Steve Ditko, part 1 ".
Okay, I know this looks like crap, as I don't have any decent coloring tools (and wouldn't really know how to use them anyway), but here's where I'm trying to go with this.
There's a painting by Magritte, called the Son of Man. Wiki Link
The image is meant to be an homage to that -- same colors on the bricks, sky, the apple and hat, and so on. The arrow through the hat is meant to look like a pencil with arrow fletchings on it, and is dripping juice from puncturing the apple, the juice trailing off down the brickwork. The hat is meant to show a rip in the side, as if it too might've been hit with arrows.
I was thinking of an old Oingo Boingo album cover when I came up with this -- really, the border would be solid black with the lettering in white, but I couldn't make the crappy MS Paint tool I have here do that -- it wanted to put a white block around the letters, but never mind that.
But hey, I'm just glad I was able to DO THIS. I don't normally consider myself a very good drawer, but I really liked the idea in my head, and I feel really good about actually making the time to see this through and jury rig up a way to scan it on a crappy photocopier so I could post it.
If someone else wants to fiddle with this idea, or color it, that would be really awesome. I wouldn't have the first clue on how to make it look even halfway decent.
@Thom Marrion: This week, you stole the show @Samita Chatterjee: Always a pleasure to see your input @andrewdrilon: I love this one @NickDonald: Indeed, very efficient
Great stuff this week--I love seeing the wildly different approaches everyone comes up with for these challenges!
@Doc Vulture: Good call! DB Cooper was absolutely my inspiration (although I took some artistic liberties with some of the details)...In general, I liked the idea of some guy in a business suit on a commercial flight being like "fuck this--I'm out of here"!
Lots of photo-based layouts this week, some of it gorgeous! @Thom Marrion: totally curious how you generated that image--are the hands/flag and the rain all filtered photographs, or is some of it painted? However achieved, the water effects (both the streaking rain and the drops impacting at the bottom) are stunning...
The colors of this one are inspired by the gorgeous album cover to Motorpsycho's "Walking With J". I played around with different background colors, but couldn't find a more suited one.
I've got one more idea that I wanna do before the weekend's over. We'll see if anyone gets there before me, and if I find the creative energy to pull it off properly. EDIT: Oh, wait, only one submission per. Darn. Oh well, this is the better one of mine :)
