We're going to launch one of these threads a month. And down the months and years, we'll build up not only a mugshot parade of the Whitechapel crew -- but also, for those who choose to participate monthly, there'll be a record of how we all change and grow (and in my case age horribly).

Obviously, I encourage participation from everyone, even if you're just joining the place. This thread is certainly NOT just for the old lags. In fact, the more new faces the better.

So. Take a photo of yourself and post it (if you're not sure how -- you put a photo on the web somewhere, a free hosting site like Flickr or Photobucket or your LJ gallery if you use LJ -- Blogger image hosting won't work -- and click the "img" button above to put the address of the image in, the http://) here.

I'll get to mine once I'm, you know... piss off, I'm busy...

yesterday, I was mostly sceptical of the traditional May Bank Holiday weather. Today I was justified in my scepticism. though I have found out that no matter how bad the weather is for jogging, it cannot be more soul-destroying than the workout dvd I tried today.

Hi All! Here is a slice of my face illustrating the fact that one of my 2 maxillary sinuses is almost completely filled with what my ENT believes to be infected tissue! I get to have surgery in 10 days to 'debride' the inside of my face. weeeeee -____-

And this is a series of slices of my face showing the progression of said tissue blockage(there should be two black spots in the middle of my skull, one on the left and one on the right). If my face was a butt, i'd be chronically constipated. Of course, i'd also be a butt face so i'm okay with having a constipated face-type face instead.

To make sure this is still within SPIT guidelines, i'm including the outside of my face(currently at work). I'm hoping nothing goes wrong with the surgery and it still looks mostly like this when i'm done.

@SteadyUp- Oooooh, that's a serious operation to endure. Does the sternum reattach, or do they keep it with a removable clasp or something in case they have to do more work on your heart in the future? The scar will be pretty nifty looking

Three weeks ago I got a tubal ligation. I'm rather proud. I think it's a responsible thing to do, and I don't see why most men don't get vascetomies. Your ejaculate looks and feels exactly the same, it's a 10 minute procedure, in and out of the doctor's office in an hour's time, and you NEVER (well, 98% never) have to worry about an unplanned child changing your entire forseeable life, or have to go through the unfortunate experience of abortion. I'm quite an advocate of limiting the reproduction rate, especially for those who can't emotionally or financially look after their offspring. < / rant >

@256 & Astrocrat - You should ask if you can get them on CD. That way you can have a copy and make new ones whenever you want. Also, there's a whole host of different programs you can download for free that read the medical test image data, and many of them have an option to automatically turn a section of your imaging into a mov which would be easy to convert to a gif - Something I've been meaning to do.

@DC - I had an ASD repair through the same incision when I was five, so I have a pretty good idea of how much it'll fade ultimately. What I don't remember is how long it'll take. If you know of anything that helps, I'd be interested, though my chest hair will take care of most of it.

@Rachael - wow. I'm not even entirely sure what's going on there. Is it one opening on top and a big slit on the bottom? It almost looks more like bruising than incisions. And didn't they, y'know, sew you up after? I'd thought tube-tying was roughly as simple as a vasectomy.

The sternum is tied together with wire, but it heals about as well as any broken bone, and I'm currently wrapping up a three-month period of putting no pressure on it whatsoever, including lifting over ten pounds. Sleeping on my back was the hardest part.

@Steadyup-There's one incision that's visible and the other goes through the belly button, I had the surgery a few years ago. The coloration is probably a combination of blood and iodine disinfectant.

The most uncomfortable part of the procedure for me is that they have to "inflate" you with CO2 before the procedure and then the gas has to work its way out of your body.

I am in a good mood.

Yar, I have a surgery picture or two. Last November I had a large chunk of diseased tissue removed from my lower back. It was making me sick for years. I was always being misdiagnosed since it is a sort of rare disease and because I had no insurance, no money to keep paying for doctors to make guesses... and accuse me of poor personal hygiene and/or being a faker with bed sores. Pfft Every day I felt weak and dizzy, confused. I was having seizures I was so sick... it was a nightmare.

So I used my own degree in docterin, taken from 'Grannies Home Schooled Tricks at Healin Folk' and naturally I came to the conclusion that I was growing a tail and turning into a leper.

Finally my new freebie doctor realized what it was, called a surgeon/specialist and that dude went to town with a knife. 4 days in the hospital and I was all better. It turned out to be a couple things, but mainly a Pilonidal Cyst caused by severe Hidradenitis suppurativa. I still have the HS in my armpits but it could be worse, [careful if you decide to google the images, very gross pics] it's nothing compared to what I was living with. Its more like a minor annoyance.

Only took a decade but hey, I literally feel like I awoke from a coma, that is how drastically my life has changed. Now its all healed up on my back and I have a handfull of nasty closeups of 'the small my back' and buttcrack where a chunk of me heals gradually. Yeah, I don't think anyone wants to see them... except my friend Mo in NY, however I question his motives.

I have begun a new chapter in my life. Hells yes.
I never thought I would miss my wound vac, but ... for a few months he was my little gurgling sidekick.

@ thewaltonsare - Thanks so much. I'm normally not one to worry about doctor's visits but the only other time i've been under relatively heavy sedation was for the extraction of my wisdom teeth 3 years ago and, as it turns out, that surgery may be the cause of the current issue - the upper right wisdom tooth was partially nested into the bottom of the sinus that now hosts chunks of who know's what. Also, hearing about the 'unpacking' of the gauze that they stuff into the sinus post-surgery sounds pretty unpleasant.

On the plus side, the Doc said they can fix my deviated septum at the same time since, y'know, they'll be digging around in there anyways. 2 for 1 deals are the best!

@ fauxhammer - Interestingly enough, this whole surgery is endoscopic so, yeah, i can totally imagine a Dalek having an attachment for a debrider. From what i can tell, it's a little tube with a rapidly spinning blade, exposed on the side of the tube near the tip. The blade takes small slices of whatever, bone, tissue, slime, and then there's a vacuum that sucks all the sliced up stuff into a container.

Technically, it sounds like awesome tech. Realistically, it sounds icky.

@ burntcopper - Yeah, plates are keen, in certain situations. I had a friend who wrecked his bicycle doing about 35 mph and stopped himself using a combination of his face and a steel guardrail. Essentially, he snapped his cheekbone off of his skull from the eye socket down to the teeth. The doctors who worked on the reconstructive surgery said that he 'powdered' all the little bone bits that make up the palate and cheeks so they used titanium plates and wire mesh to rebuild it. After the recovery, you couldn't really tell what had happened but, structurally, the eye on his injured side sat about a quarter inch back from normal, making it hard to focus on things close to his face. That and the fact that the metal in his face transferred heat so well he had to stop eating and drinking things that were either hot or cold so his eyes and brain wouldn't hurt. I'm hoping my surgery requires less reconstruction but similar painkillers. ^____^

@ 256 and Rachael Tyrell - I totally didn't think about getting copies of my scan results. I'll have to mention that to my Doc since she was totally fine with me taking pictures of them using my cell. I'd love to see an animated tour of my skull.

@ Steadyup and Rachael(again:P) - Unfortunately, since the surgery is endoscopic, i get no bitchin' scars like you both, just a very sore nostril. Rachael, your stretch marks are very interesting, they look almost like those images of Martian dust devil trails(gah, google-fu has failed me, can't find pictures i just mentioned anywhere) if that doesn't sound too weird.

@ Dovryn - Yay for relief, even if it was oft delayed. This whole sinus thing has been going on for about 3 years of, basically, week long infections every 2-3 months that end up not only making me fill with mucus but also make all of my upper right teeth feel like they are being raped by wasps...from the inside. I finally saw a specialist after my family doc just kept feeding me anti-biotics that are great for temporary fix but did nothing to stop the persistent reoccurring nastiness. It took a 5 minute CT scan to determine what the problem was and the surgery was scheduled for a month after that. I like that. Also, GAAAH(I googled even after you said not too...i'm so sorry, i didn't mean to look, it just happened). Hope the good feelings continue.

@ rickiep00h: I think you're right, there is a weird love for pocky - for something that's essentially just another chocolate and biscuit snack food. You can probably put it down to the fact that it used to only be available in Japan and was imported to the West (so it's like the byword for snacks for geeky Japanophiles); the fact that eating stick shaped objects (see: breadsticks, Brighton rock) is actually really satisfying; the way that - as SteadyUP says - the name is fun to say; and finally the fact that pocky is really, really fucking delicious. Seriously, there are good cookies and bad cookies, and pocky's combination of biscuit stick and chocolate is light, delicious and remarkably satisfying. I know a lot of people who used to be dismissive of 'the whole pocky thing' until they actually tried it and were like "wow, this is actually really good". To be honest it's far from my favourite snack, but I certainly appreciate its many and varied delights from time to time. Also, how many other snacks do you know that have a flavour that has been designed to appeal to the sophisticated male palate?

And that's more about pocky than I probably should have written.

The cellphone camera works wonders in sunlight, although it's grainy in anything less. Still, it needed some minor tweaking to add the blur (as the first picture's background has a woman sunbathing right under my chin, which would have looked slightly comical), to remove my shadow from the bottom of the picture, and to get the colors right in both shots (I was too yellow in the second one).

I need to use a proper camera more often.

This is Ulath. He is my roommates' cat, but he has decided since I moved in that he is my boyfriend/bodyguard. We came to the conclusion long ago that he is a mentally challenged alien in a cat suit. His cat suit is slightly defective, however, because he is deaf and also sheds enough to produce duplicates of himself. He would have called the armada for a full scale invasion months ago, but he only spares this planet due to his love for me. And my black corduroy pants.

Lemme show you how I've been feeling the last two weeks or so:

...Okay, so that's my "life is fucking great"-face. I kinda suck at smiling when self-portraiting. Guess I'll just rattle on instead:
When I joined here, little over two years ago, I'd just flunked out of college. Well, I'd just finally admitted to flunking out of college, after having gone around not telling anyone, including close family, for months. There was a whole shock/denial thing going on there for a while.

Anyway, I thought I'd FUBAR'ed my educational prospects, had no idea what I wanted to do next, and spent the next two years first wandering around in shock that I could've fucked up like this, and then - aside from the occasional fit of trying to move on and make the best of it - mostly just wallowing in delicious depression and self-loathing, and, of course, trying to pretend everything was dandy.

Fast forward to Wednesday before last, when I found out that I actually STILL have funding for 3 years of college. And, after adjusting to the fact that suddenly I had to think about what I wanted to do, instead of just trying to find a job - carrying only a high school diploma - that wouldn't make me want to blow my brains out after a month, I realized I wanted to go back to the field I'd left - just a slightly different branch.

So, September, I'm starting my Chemical Engineering degree, back in a lab, twisting and breaking and assembling, and generally just bending fucking molecules to my will. Until then, plan is to earn as much fun-money as humanly possible. Shitty jobs are a lot more easy to swallow when they're just a temporary means to a visible end.

I'm back. I feel like me, for the first time in years. I've got plans, I've got means, I've got momentum. I'm so betterstrongerfaster I'd make the 6 Million Dollar Man look like a victim of extreme inflation... Well, more so. I've been standing still for two years, in pretty much every possible way. I am fucking raring to go again.
Stand back, people.

@AlephNought - I just got the smaller version. (They didn't have any larger.) I have an anecdote regarding my favorite thing about Target.

I saw these cups and they were $1.50 each, so I was pretty excited. My total was way more than expected and I noticed the cups were $2.99 each. "Wait," I said, "I thought those were $1.50." I've had this stuff happen at Target before. They always just give me the cheaper price without even asking anyone. Since I'm an honest guy, I said, "Well, they could have been in the wrong section."
He yelled to a man, who was presumably his supervisor, standing about twenty feet away, "Hey, he says these are $1.50, but they're coming up at $2.99." The man looked at him like he was a dumbass. He said, "Change it!"

This is why I love Target. They don't give a fuck.

That was all a very trite story I realize.

@ RIcochet - I'm feeling totally fine. The scar is a bit annoying, as it has made a staple sized indent-dimple half way between belly-button and hairline which makes the feminine curve of belly look... more like flab. If that makes sense. However... the more I read up on the birth control pill, the more it seems like a really horrible thing to do to oneself. If I weren't going for permanent sterilization, I think I'd have switched to an IUD. If anything, it's worth it not to be on "the pill" for reasons of finding and enjoying a sexual mate. There have been a number of studies that indicate that being on the birth control pill changes women's chemistry and alters who they find attractive. The first place I'd read about this issue is here, but there seem to be a whole host of sites that discuss the issue. It may have a great correlation to the raise in the divorce rate.

Hard at work, this is me when we found the airconditioning. After about 4 hours of boiling. (Well, not really boiling per se - about 50 degrees celsius/122F)

After yet another couple of hours we figured out that we had a cd-player, and cd's.

New glasses. REAL GLASS! (not that blurry plastic prism sticker thing) So, do you think they are too big for my head? Are the nose pads not supposed to show? I'm allowed 30 days to decide to exchange them if I so decide, and 2 weeks remain.

While I did tweak the photo to excessively brighten it, I did NOT tweak my eyes individually. No, they dilate differently and have been changing color. It's slight, and subtle, but I swear, I'm getting one green eye and one blue. Oh, my delirium youth is wreaking it's revenge.

Rachael - Your glasses are quite spiff. I can't tell the color difference between irises on this monitor. I wouldn't have noticed the dilation difference had you not mentioned it. Everyone has oddities, no point in dwelling on them. My eyes have slowly been lightening since high school, and one side of my widow's peak is a little uneven, and so on. Most of the time if you don't bring attention to it, no one even cares, even if you think it's weird. It what makes us all special snowflakes, and all that.

I did notice that your eye seems significantly less crossed. Is this something that comes and goes, or has some progress been made in that front and I missed it?

NAh... it comes and goes. One nearsighted eye, one crossed eye. My glasses can only be somewhat effective, because the turn in and focus ability changes constantly.

The optician lady tried on my glasses and she freaked the fuck out: "Oh my GAAAAAD. What kind of glasses are these?! How do you SEE?!" and turning to her co-worker: I tried them on, and it was HORRIBLE!!"

oh, but you misunderstand... Between my love for Delirium and David Bowie, I'd really would love mismatched eyes. I find it amusing, because so desperately did I want one green eye in my early 20's, I cried when an eye doctor told me I couldn't get contacts.

@Rachael Tyrell: Nose pads look fine. Hard to tell if glasses are too big for the face as the image doesn't show the whole face, but if they were too big, it'd be a case of only just too big, rather than obviously oversized. They're a neat shape as well, which also makes it harder to judge the sizing. From the image, they look good.

Regarding differently coloured eyes, I went to college (it would have been high school in the States, I think) with a guy who had one blue eye and the other was green. What made it even more interesting was that his racial descent made it unlikely that he'd have either colour. It was a pity by the age of about 16/17 he'd have blazed up by the time he got to class in the morning. The bloodshot and glazed eyes made the unusual colours less impressive unfortunately, but I digress.

So, I'm at my mother's house which is home to a bajillion photo albums. After a discussion with a friend of mine, I decided that I really needed to find pictures of my 4 year old self at Halloween.

That. Is an attempt at a Princess Leia. What that entails is pigtails, all white, moonboots, and a lightsaber. Because I wanted one.

That. Is R2, in a pillowcase (played by my then 2 year old sister, Leia, and Luke (my then 6 year old brother in all black, rain boots, and a glove on one hand), and a pterodactyl.
