It does, of course, say something to the credit of the authors that one can become so frustrated with fictional creatures.

And, of course, it's useful from a storytelling front for the characters not to figure out everything immediately. But ever since whatsername got sent back. . . . but how many hours ago in the narrative?

Decompressing the storytelling like this makes for an interesting perspective. It's like in Lost when 3 years had gone by for the audience, but just 60 days for the characters. . . It's hard to believe we've had Freakangels for almost two years now! So even though it *feels* like they're slow to figure things out, they've really just had one or two REALLY BUSY weeks (or days?) when all this stuff has piled on top of them. And they really have made some nice discoveries in that time, like teleporting and restoring buildings. . .

(The quasi-Nietzschean "master-race" stuff... come on, anybody with two cents' worth of brain matter who's lived post-twentieth-century can figure out what's wrong with that.)

Well, given that Warren's a pretty clear atheist, I seriously doubt that's the direction of this story. Messengers of God, no. Creations of Something else, perhaps. That said, we really haven't gotten much into the origin of the 'angels. So far the story doesn't seem to care how the 'angels got here, just that they did.

Think about it like the old Niven/Pournelle novel, "Lucifer's Hammer." It really doesn't matter how the asteroid came to be formed. It is peculiar that it is Just Them with the package, though.

Why? It's a trope of a lot of science fiction and fantasy that certain people happen to be in the right place at the right time to gain their abilities through no planning or action of their own. Hell, look at Spider Man. Blind chance places Peter Parker in exactly the right position to get bitten by that spider and gain his powers. The odds against that happening, even within the Marvel universe, are extremely high. But it happened in that story.

So, suppose twenty-four people in the Freakangels' "flat little village in southeast England" happened to be fucking at exactly the time that some rogue spurt of cosmic radiation bathed their area and altered the DNA of their eggs and sperm to create the 'angels. No experiment. No alien plots. Just pure, random chance. And just like there's no real need for some convoluted plot for Peter Parker to become Spider Man, there is also no real need for intense complexity to surround the creation of the Freakangels.

It's certainly an option for Warren, and there could be quite a bit of story space around the ideas of alien intervention or secret government experiments. Ultimately, though, Freakangels is the story of "what happened next." Most of his lines I have laughed out loud at. If I thought his was a conventional story i'd say he has all the makings of a good super villain.

    Luke does crack me up and anger me in equal measure. Every time he says something along the lines of "why does everyone hate/keep hitting me?" with seemingly total incongruity it makes me laugh. This guy apparently genuinely can't understand why the others can't or won't think like him.]]>
