OK, so here's my "big news" that I've had to keep quiet about until I could talk publicly about it. Thanks for putting up with my "non-disclosure" self, it's been really hard ...

I'm doing design work for Thomas Dolby's next music release.

As you may remember, a while back I entered and won a contest to design a t-shirt for the one-off gig at Union Chapel that Dolby did. He was very happy with my shirt design and used it extensively in the show itself. I wrote him a follow-up email, congratulating him on a successful show and thanking him for getting so much use out of the design for the show. His reply: "No, thank you. Fancy taking a crack at doing the design for my next single?"

You must understand;
I have been a hardcore Thomas Dolby fan since I picked up the UK import 12" single of "Europa and the Pirate Twins" from my local music store in 1982, and have continued to love his music solidly since then. This is a complete mind-blower for me; I imagine time-travelling back to 1985 Paul Sizer, still in college, and whispering in my own ear that in 20 or so years I would be doing design work for my musical hero! My head would have exploded, and a horrible time paradox would have occurred also (not to mention my younger self screaming when I saw what I would look like in the future)!

Thomas and I have been in constant communication from the UK (he lives along the North Sea coast with a re-constructed large life boat on his property that is his studio, powered by wind-power, of course), where he is recording his new album, "A Map Of The Floating City", due out late this year.

So yes, it's true. And here's the cool part. Thomas is also the musical director for TED, and he did a live version of a new song called "Love Is A Loaded Pistol" which you can see performed at this year's TED Talks.


And you can also sign up at his site and and download a free version of this live single with my artwork for the cover. I'm working on a lot of other design work with Thomas that is linked to some incredibly cool concepts and ideas he has for releasing a new album on his own, and making use of what the internet and mobile tech can now really offer an artist who is as tech-savvy as Dolby (his company Beatnik created the polyphonic ringtone technology that is in every Nokia phone on Earth, so he's got THAT on his resume along with "She Blinded Me With Science").

The new songs from this album are not what most will expect; the electronics are very buried, and these songs are very organic and natural sounding. It's here! Thomas Dolby's first new studio music in 20 years, the "Amerikana" EP is released today, and I can finally divulge the news that I will be working with Thomas Dolby on ALL of the design work leading up to and including his new album, "A Map Of The Floating City" later this year. It's a dream come true for a huge Dolby geek/fan, but I've had a great time collaborating with Thomas so far, and there's some really cool stuff coming up in the near future!

Today I’m releasing my first new studio music in nearly 20 years. It’s called Amerikana, and it’s available ONLY to members of my online fan community, The Flat Earth Society.

"I’ve chosen not to make this a full commercial release for various reasons. My plan has always been to put out a series of three digital EPs (taking their names from the 3 sections of my upcoming album A Map Of The Floating City) followed by a physical album with additional tracks. But as I’ve yet to settle on a particular release method for that album – be it self-publishing, a record label, or some new hybrid – I’d prefer not to undermine the album’s commercial appeal by pulling the trigger too early. However, my ‘hardcore’ audience have been following my adventures on my blog and web site as I go through the process of writing and recording these songs, and it’s only natural they would want an early listen to my new music. So I arrived at the idea of releasing the EPs exclusively to FES members. You will only be able to buy it here on my website, and not on iTunes, Amazon etc.

Amerikana is an affectionate look back at the 22 years I lived in the USA before returning to my native Britain three summers ago. While living in the States I became very fond of roots American music. And as it’s music that was always spread and shared by travelers sitting around camp fires, I felt I’d add my traveler’s voice to its ongoing story. Needless to say, I’m no hillbilly or good ol’ country boy, so my own flavour of americana is a bit twisted, a bit mischievous. ‘Road To Reno’ charts the progress of a pair of hapless lovers as their red convertible blazes a trail across the desert in a kind of indie road movie, serenaded by my longtime cohorts the Jazz Mafia Horns. ‘Toad Lickers’ is about a group of crazed eco-hippies in the Welsh mountains who get high on Bufo alvarius and creep into the local town after hours in search of munchies. It has cameos from Imogen Heap on jaw harp, longtime FES member Crackers on accordion, and fiddler Natalie MacMaster.

But the EP’s ‘coup de resistance’ is a 7?38? epic entitled ‘17 Hills’. Very much in the tradition of ‘I Love You Goodbye’ and ‘Budapest By Blimp’, this song weaves a bittersweet tale using words, sounds, textures, and surprising left turns in the arrangement. It features beautiful playing by Mark Knopfler, who graciously allowed me into his private studio as he added some of his signature licks, complimenting my vocal to perfection. Pedal steel player Bruce Kaphan, who produced American Music Club and has toured with David Byrne, adds soaring atmospherics. Natalie MacMaster injects a touch of Cape Breton charm with a mesmerising looped fiddle solo. Radical string quartet Ethel beckon us into the realm of the surreal. And Jeffrey Wash’s pristine fretless seems to channel one of the greatest bass guitar showcases of all time, Joni’s ‘Hejira’.

As I mentioned, Amerikana is only one section of my album, and three of its four songs are represented here. The price, including high-res MP3s and a print-ready digital booklet, is a very affordable $3.00 / E3.00 / £2.00. The subsequent two EPs ‘Oceanea’ and ‘Urbania’ – available later in 2010 – have quite different styles, and some may prefer one over another. My albums, as you know, often cover a wide range of genres, because like a novelist I really enjoy exploring a new idiom, instrumentation, time and place; and thankfully my core fanbase has been willing to go along for the ride. So you have options: you can choose to wait for the full album and get all the goodies in one package, or you can plunge in now, and see where you end up! The eventual AMOTFC album will definitely contain at least 3 songs not included on the EPs.

That said, there is a theme running through the EPs that you might want to be aware of. The album has a backstory which is something you will have to dig a bit to uncover. Contained on each EP is a ‘clue’, and you’re going to need to unravel its secret at each stage of the proceedings. I won’t say more than that for now. My recent visit to JJ Abrams’ facility in California might give you a hint about what I’m up to!

It's got puppets, parkour, burlesque dancers, bluegrass-techno hybrid music, what's not to love?

I had nothing to do with this video, but it's still cool, and comes on the event horizon of Dolby's new EP 'Oceanea', which will again be available to the digital world at the end of November. You can find more info at Thomas Dolby's website.

Mr. Dolby and I have been VERY busy these last few months, and as Warren recently said, it's a bit like working in a well; lots of work, but nothing I can show people, which is both exciting and frustrating, but ultimately exciting, because Dolby is one smart guy, and the stuff we've been working on is going to geek this crowd out big time!

There's some electronics, but mostly everything sounds very warm and analogue. The front photo of the EP cover was taken by a photographer that lives next door to Dolby, but those concrete blocks are also next door to Dolby; they were anti-tank barricades left over from World War 2, and were put along the coast to prevent large tanks from getting further inland. Dolby wanted to use them on this cover (he wanted a somewhat surreal/Pink Floyd/dreamtime feel to the image), based on a photo that his neighbor had made of the blocks with a sky and one single cloud (added via PhotoShop). We talked about perhaps just adding Dolby in digitally, but I was pushing for actually getting him out on the blocks so it would look better. We still added in the single cloud sky digitally, but I was able to control more aspects of color and correction with a new photo shoot. Dolby wanted the shot to be open to interpretation; was he waiting for a blimp? Was he cloudwatching? Why is he dressed for vacation? He actually bought a really cool sextant on EBay for the shoot that gets a closeup on the back cover.

It was also a challenge of waiting for a decent day to shoot on the southern coastline where he lives in the UK. While we were waiting, Thomas and I Skyped about what he should wear, props, etc (Oh crap, I'm helping Thomas Dolby pick out his wardrobe!). I sent him and the photographer sketches for the shots I envisioned, so when a decent weather day appeared, they knew exactly what to get and what to shoot. Then I got all the photos uploaded to me and we picked from there.
So this counts as my first virtual trans-Atlantic directed photo shoot.

For the last 6 months, I've been working directly with Thomas Dolby designing the graphics for a big online game that is connected with his upcoming album A MAP OF THE FLOATING CITY. The game will kind of a trading game, but less annoying than other social games like Farmville, etc. The game will unfold a larger theme that is behind Dolby's new album, and as players work through the game, they will unlock special downloads and learn about Dolby's past music, and new stuff as well. The purpose of the game is to build an interactive community of players who will become dependent on one another to work together to get to the end point of the game, which include some seriously cool prizes!

Along with a crack team of webdev people scattered around the globe, we've crafted a rich, weird and nuanced little world that I think people here will dig. The game actually uses Google Earth to drive the play environment, and at this point, it looks really cool. We're maybe a month out from going live, but Dolby just announced the game to his fan club.

I've been going bananas, designing all manners of icons, symbols, maps, environments, ships/vessels, interfaces, and anything else needed for this near future altered world environment. It has been a blast, as I've had to essentially "brand" a whole new world of countries, flags, tribes, boats, etc. The base premise of the game is a world after an "event" that has wiped the collective memories of the populace, and who are forced to move forth on the flooded world towards the newly navigable North Pole region in any kind of boat available from the equatorial areas, now too hot to live in. Dolby actually just made this video himself as a slide show. The female vocals in the song are by the immensely talented Eddi Reader. And true fact: there is NO AutoTune on Dolby's voice in this song, just some old fashioned compression tricks to get that effect. Eddi's voice just sounds that beautiful on its own.

Nearly a year in the making, Thomas Dolby's "Floating City" online game launches today!

This has been a big one; I've been involved from the very beginning, working closely with Thomas on developing the look and design of this game, working with an international crack team of incredibly dedicated tech, coding, writing and project management geniuses to take my designs and make them actually work and function. It's been a thrill to work with such a smart and savvy team on this project.
And now it's out there for the world to play and explore.

Concept-wise, this is a really cool idea from Thomas; have a game that people can play, meet other Dolby fans from around the Earth, learn about his previous music, and hear bits of his new music. It's a little post-apocalyptic, a little steampunk, a little "Mad Max", and 100% geek-tastic! As deep and complex as Thomas' songs are, this game is exactly the same. And it's a game that rewards you for being smart, inquisitive, and willing to solve problems and think ahead!

This game launched yesterday, Wednesday, June 22, at 6pm GMT, and will play out for the next 2-3 months, finishing up with the release of his new album "A Map of the Floating City" in late summer/early fall. Well, it's September, and the FLOATING CITY online game for Thomas Dolby is over, for all intents and purposes a smashing success for something that could have exploded upon launching. Over 5,000 ...

...which was very interesting to have to de-cloak at the end of the game. "Soot" seemed to be well liked, although there were a few players who MAY have developed a crush on her, thus me having to add to the cliché that all girls on the internet are actually older guys. I thought for sure that someone would have figured me out, but at this point, I seem to have maintained the illusion up to the point of me "coming out" last week to the players. Heard a couple of "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" screams, but other than this, most people enjoyed the disguise.

The game was really an amazing experience for me, in that I am NOT a gamer AT ALL (last and only thing I've done was MYST; no D&D, no MAGIC, NOTHING) and suddenly I am neck deep in a very intel based trading game, with some really hardcore WOW level players, who demanded a high level of interaction and play. The game was planned out, but by necessity was also very liquid, as we adapted to all kinds of changes and problems that popped up, and that made things very weird at points, but also very exciting. I had to really think on the fly, in character, and lead without spoiling, nudge without showing favoritism, and deal with folks who would have gotten arse eels within seconds of their first posts here. But despite the bumps and wrankles of the game, I thought it went very well, meeting it's objective of getting a huge new audience exposed to Thomas Dolby and his music through the narrative in the game. I was also an amazing experience to have to design all the graphic infrastructure for the game, making logo systems and layouts for the game that were intuitive and playable. At some point, I've gotta make a book about the design part of this; I've got GIGABYTES of design on this project.

Next up; the album, coming out October 25th. Dolby's doing a short US promo tour in October, talking about THE FLOATING CITY game and playing people a few songs on his laptop and keyboard, in a lecture format.
He's in Chicago this Friday, and then out to the West Coast.

He's then doing a full UK tour in November, and will be touring the states in February/March of 2012.

OK, after nearly 2 years of working with the guy trans-continentally, via Skype, email, video chats, phone, YouSendIt, DropBox, texting, and every other way of communication that doesn't include ...

Short version: Dolby is a great guy. Great to work for, nice guy, wicked smart, funny, and very very gracious. He gave me a shout out at his lecture/mini-concert at Martyrs' in Chicago, and we went out after the show and had dinner. It was so bizarre in some ways, given what a huge fan I am of him, and yet we've talked nearly every day in some form for the last 20 months, so it was more like a personal meeting more than anything else, which made it all the more cool.
AND I finally got to actually see the physical CDs that I've been designing for the past 3 months.


The album is out in the UK on October 24, and October 25 in the States.
