That was absolutely amazing, and well worth waiting for! I love how it starts out as a neutral(ish) summary, and then bit by bit we realise Luke must be the narrator. I hope the whole of Volume 5 is 'his' story. Can't stop thinking he's the funniest and best character, though morally twisted, of course.

Cold? In England, Summer has reared her golden head; it's hot, hot, hot. However for me, this means hay fever and constant sneezing like a faulty cannon. Annoying, repetitive AND embarrassing!

I sort of got a job, and am going home in two weeks for a visit (I live on the other side of the country) and have been working for the past 5 weeks and should be happy. I was hyper and feeling very sadistic. Right now I just hate everything for the same reason I wanted to hurt someone and bounce a lot earlier this week... no reason in particular.

Man, they were some sinister looking children, weren't they? I chortled when that 'repugnant helicopter' line made it all too clear who we were listening to. Man, Luke's a charming horror sometimes. Interesting that he considers Mark a mind controlling bastard, I'm looking forward to seeing how that one turns out.

It's feeling very summery here, but it remains to be seen whether I will embrace the sunshine or just spend all weekend switching between beds and screens. Have a good one, folks.

Naah, he just knows that's what the others think.

Personally I'm trapped between the dilemma of making myself a giant ice mocha or drinking scorching hot tea in the hope that it down-regulates my hypothalamus and cools me off. And whether the temperature rise caused by the metabolic effort of doing either is worth it.

Losing some weight would also be good. The problem is, I'd have to exercise more... which would make me overheat.

At least I have a mesh-backed office chair. And I'm at home, where I can open the windows. They never get the aircon right in the office.

That was wonderful. One of the best recaps I've ever read, with plenty of new info slipped in. The laugh out loud point for me was Kirk's linguistic education.

Weather has been alternating between cool but bright sunny days, and cooler rainy days. Exactly the conditions I like, so I'm pretty chuffed. Even better they're making us do prolonged "be all you can be!" training course at work, which means getting paid to sit around and watch videos for several hours a week. Life is good.

I suppose a narcissist would think well of himself.

...but Luke's inner voice is coming across as lot more reasonable than I've ever seen him act. KK might be a horrible girl who makes loud noises (and disses his manhood in his first scene), but Arkady (who gave him a taste of what her OD was like for being a mind controlling bastard on his ex) and 'other-half' Jack are both shown in a fairly sympathetic light.

Interesting... maybe Luke's been on a week long bender? Maybe that hole in the head did him some good: like opening his mind up!?

Just regarding the last panel, Luke says "And Luke has just explained this all to himself in the first person..." but shouldn't that be "third person" given that he is referring to himself by name? In first person narrative the subject is yourself, so you use words like "I" or "we". In second person narrative the subject is the reader/listener, so you would use "you". Third person is where the subject is someone other than the narrator or the reader/listener, so you refer to the subject as "he/she", "they", or by name. I don't mean to be a grammar nazi or anything...but after rereading that, I suppose I am. Still, thought it should be said.

Anyway, can't wait to see how Luke managed to survive a shot to the head. Maybe Karl's sort of right, but it's Luke who's a zombie and not Mark. Also, I love how Karl is poking Mark's face with his toe. :p

Fantastic recap. Great way to summarize everything for the new volume. The Freaktots are freaky indeed. And I love the horrified look on everyone's face as they stare in Luke's direction, compared with Luke's own expression of anger and contempt.

YES!!! IT'S FINALLY HERE!!!. Sorry, just had to get that out. On a calmer, less ecstatically exultant tone, did anyone else lol at head-plug? I loved this. Hey, did anyone else catch the phrase, "A little bigger than MOST of them intended."? Does this imply someone wanted the world to end? Loved the kid 'angels, couldn't pick out every single one, but most of them were pretty easy to recognize, great job by the artists incorporating traits of the characters into their kid versions.

It was warm (though not hot) yesterday, and sunny. Today is a bit on the chilly side and rainy. Which is as it should be in spring.

Nifty recap. Loved the comment about Karl and his tinfoil hat! Almost sounds like Luke's impressed at Alice and Jack for shooting him. Like it brought them up a notch in his eyes or something. Maybe getting killed was good for Luke. Or maybe he's in too much pain to be as much of a jerk as he usually is. Even the snark about KK was toned down.

Oh, and the writing is top notch on this, Warren. The first person shift in perspective has the nice touch of changing the relationship between you and the reader. I felt basically grabbed by the cerebral cortex; which is what I imagine it must feel like to be near Luke, at this particular moment in the story.

i'm interested in how luke knows what's on connor's mind, in fact all the things going on - either no one's screening themselves or yeah, luke just picked up a little more prescience after coming back. also like the foreshadowy speech about arkady (luke actually admitted someone was ever sharper than he was?)

mr. duffield, in addition to the lovely bit with the foot prodding mark (didn't even notice!), the perspectives of the FAs in the hospital are simply brilliant. i could stare at them (and reconstruct the room in my mind) for hours. thank you!

Oh dear. It looks like they do get stronger in the package when they die. As in: death kinda aches but lookit the pretty colors! yoy.

Lovelovelove the narrative, Warren. Just loved it. Loved how it started somewhat distant and factual, a third person narrative calmly, inexorably working from the general setting ("oh man") to the emergency of this very moment ("holy fucking shitballs!!!"). It's like we get the omniscient third person infodump that Luke got in re...awakening? resurrection? The narrative tells us that Luke is telling himself this same story in the first person, we can doubt the narrative, I suppose. But if one takes it at face value then Luke just learned some things that aren't entirely communal knowledge among the 'Angels. By simply dying and then coming back to life.

It's chilly here. It really shouldn't be. But if the law of festival attendance holds then tomorrow it'll be fucking hot. So, I'm *just* starting to see that in some ways, Luke might be Warren Ellis's 'personal' character - now, don't get me wrong; Luke is capable of a number of sorts of horror and moral awfulness that I wouldn't expect from even the most Vodka & Red Bull fueled Ellis, but I feel like a lot of that vitriol and cynicism that we all know and love Mr. Ellis for gets channeled through Luke's voice.

(P.S. - Psychotic fanboys? Mr. Ellis is *not* a freakangel - do not attempt to verify his immortality or special powers. AFAIK, his self-pickling preservation project is not yet complete anyway).

Now that is how to write a re-cap. Damn if that didn't just make me actually like Luke a bit more, rotten git that he is. Now I know how those girl's he was 'teaching' at the very beginning of Volume I must've felt with his voice winding its way inside their minds.

As always, the Art was perfect and the look on Luke's face in the last panel just said it all.

Wouldn't Connor be closer to the author's personal character? He's a Goth; he thinks too much; he's very unhappy with his physical appearance; he believes in JUSTICE and he'll go the extra mile to help people; he communicates through his writing; he maintains a cool head even while he's being attacked; he needs his time alone...

Dream therapy teaches that we are represented by every person in the dream. For writers, that means every character is a part of the author. That's why you'll see writers (especially the good ones) soak up as much information as they can like a sponge, to recharge the well. I imagine a lot of research into sociopathology goes into the creation of Luke. And I imagine studies of megalomania go into Mark...

Other than that it seemed like Luke's near death, possible death?, experience gave him a sort of clairvoyance, or maybe he has 'leveled up' because he experienced something like Arkady did, since he was able to see what Connor and Jack and them were doing since they weren't even in the room with him.
