    No pen-portraits. This is ART ONLY. Posting just a bunch of text, or a scribble and a vast number of words, will get the thread closed and your account banned.

    NO MORE PHOTO-MANIPULATION "art". I'll just delete them. People have been drenching recent threads with several pieces at a time that they've knocked out in photoshop in 2 minutes with no thought at all. I consider this to be taking the piss now.

    No more than ONE submission by any one person in any one REMAKE/REMODEL.


    So here's the deal:

    You are an artist/designer.

    You have to put together the cover for #223 of something called NEW WORLDS.

    You have been told that NEW WORLDS is the most groundbreaking, forward-looking, ambitious and original science fiction magazine in the world.

    And that's it.

    A little background: NEW WORLDS was in fact all those things... in the late 60s and early 70s. Its last issue, #222, came out in 1997. A visual history of publication. It was hugely important, made all kinds of new connections and broke all kinds of rules.

    So it's your job to imagine the kind of cover that that kind of magazine might have today.

    You have one week. Go.

    I'm 37. I grew up reading my father's & uncle's old comics and had a comprehensive, oversized trade book of sci-fi/fantasy illustrations from the decades previous to when it came out in the late 70s (1980?).

    I'll take the compliment, though. *grin*

    For the other design "REMODELS", I've had at least an inkling of what the original covers looked like, and with this one, I have no idea. So given that, I AM approaching this as 100% "I have no @#$#% idea what the design is going to look like" going in, which really seems perfect for this exercise. I am going to pass on looking at all your links, and dive in eyes closed and head first.

    We'll see what happens...

    I'm with Sizer, except the opposite. While I have no point of reference, I'm dreadfully curious to see what exactly the mag looked like. Already brewing some ideas, beforehand, though...

    There were annual digests that we got here in the states titled "Best SF stories from New Worlds" - the one from Panther Books in the link #8 was edited by Michael Moorcock (as were the previous 7). That one is imported - but they usually also had a Berkley release as well - those would sport a Jeff Jones or Vincent diFate cover as far as my memory recalls ... But I don't have a clue what the actual UK Magazine looked like. And research indicates there were quarterlies every year.

    So I knew the content but not the appearance ... interesting challenge.

    Its almost fantastic to see how the design degraded over the decades. The 90s really seemed to be a black hole.

    @helloMuller--I was struck by the exact same thing. Until the last gasp issues in the 90s, there are mostly interesting, if not great, layouts/illustrations over the entire course of publication (with some notable missteps in the 60s)....but there is at least one year in the 90s where they didn't even try (yeah, I'm looking at YOU, 1996)!... ;)

    That was the point at which NEW WORLDS was being passed around groups of external parties with Moorcock's blessing, I believe.

    Personally I miss Science Fiction Age magazine. Hard to believe I'm one of the first ones in here, but here goes. The image is from my fascination that our universe is really small compared to infinity. Now that I'm previewing this I think I may have swiped the header from somewhere? Not sure.

    I'm going through a stack of New Worlds from the 50's & 60's that I picked up on Southbank a few weeks ago. I picked up all the ones with stories by John Brunner and JG Ballard I could afford. The late 50s/early 60's cover art was very pulp. A lot of the stories involved pipe smoking and liquor cabinets.
