Awesome stuff folks! I recently did some commissioned fantasy art for our own Magnulus (which some of you may have already seen on twitter) and I thought it would kinda fit with this week's theme - so I hacked together this cover using some of it's elements and a few others. I pictured it as a super low budget sci fi fanzine, made by people who haven't got a clue what they're doing. *Note Magnulus' co-star-the disgruntled Andre Navarro- running alongside the Akylosaur.
Thank you for resurrecting my favorite childhood dinosaur, the ankylosaurus. Speaking of resurrecting dinosaurs, I want to thank Ellis for providing the fascinating history of a mag that I only encountered decades after its start. I suspect that this will help to catalyst the next incarnation of NEW WORLDS.
In the future New Worlds will be free, produced on the internet and illegal in parts of Europe. This concept kinda works, I just made up supermassive supercluster though. I'm sure galaxies orbit something or other.
@Rooth: Wouldn't Andre be running TOWARDS all of that awesomeness and pure sex energy? Unless Magnulus said something mean to him, as I suspect happened judging from Andre's expression. The grab for the scrotum is outstanding, and adding a dog? Brilliant. That is some massively choreographed drawing there, sir!
Thanks guys :) My favourite bit is how Magnus is driving the Akylosaur- all nonchalant, using a tiny wee toe chain... Heh, originally I had planned to have Andre playing the role of the grasping brunette Frazetta girl, but someone once told me never to challenge a Brazilian's masculinity (even though I know Andre would have probably gotten a good laugh out of it. Right Andre? Wait...Andre...jebus...put down the chainsaw... it was just a jo* -BBBZZZAAWWWWWWNKkkk *splatter*) This poster was fun- again, it was tweaked to fit this challenge, but the actual final, colour poster is much different and (at 17x22) will be EPIC... and I'll post it to the Artist's thread in June.
@kmcleod- Ankylosaurs were my favourite too. I guess they always reminded me of the Thing, who's my favorite comic book hero.
Came to this one late so had to whip up something quick in 10 minutes:
Lovin' Raid71's, FredG's, Paul Sizer's and Payno's. Ed Sludden proves there's no reason why Sci-Fi mags can't have illustrations for the cover, so long as they are effing cool.
Some seriously great design coming into this week's remake.
ALE: Really cool. We don't see a lot of 3D modeling here, and it really fits with the theme.
Clone Artist: I like how you got a bit "messy" with this one; lots of little hairs and scragglies in there that look really good.
leighwoosey: I love whatever that picture is (water drops on a window? Is it a photo or a computer effect? I can't tell...). The dots of color are really cool. I have to admit that I was stumped all week with this one. I had an idea, but just couldn't make it work, and I started maybe 5 different drawings that I ended up scrapping because I didn't like them or they weren't going anywhere. This lady's anatomy may be a bit weird because I was just sketching, really, and didn't put much planning into finishing this, but ended up going with it. I think I quite like it, but had to make it square to get in closer on the art...
This challenge WAS a bit weird, in that you had to design a vessel that a wide range of stuff could fit into, without over-powering the content. It's a common enough challenge/problem in design to make sure the design serves the needs of the content, but with something as near and dear to most of our hearts as sci-fi, it's hard to not imprint some of our personal likes/directions into the designs we came up with.
The best thing about a thread/challenge like this is seeing range and diversity of solutions. Not just for the spectacle, but to remind us that there's ALWAYS a different way to approach stuff, and to not always fall back on safe and predictable solutions. As I've said before, these are always a great creative kick in the ass/2x4 across the head to keep me honest and thinking about why and how I solve visual problems.
You're right; this one brought out a lot less "traditional" comic art, and we got TONS of great text and "design" design, if you know what I mean. But yeah, nice brain-bender, this week.
